TA-088v3 Identifier — Can you hack that PSP?

greg | October 14, 2008

Dark_AleX has released a simple tool to determine whether or not you’re a sucker with a [new] non-hackable hand-held. Copy each firmware EBOOT, both 3.90 and 4.05, to the root of your memory stick. Launch the TA-088v3 Identifier (GETIPL) from a homebrew-enabled PSP and it will extract and create the IPLs; if you’re good to go, the app should auto-exit in 10 seconds. This leaves you with an “ipl390.bin” and “ipl405.bin” file in the memory stick’s root.

Next, do this –

  • Connect the PSP via USB.
  • Format a memory stick with the included “mspformat” tool.
  • Use “msinst” to install the 3.90 IPL onto the freshly formatted memory stick.
  • Insert the memory stick into the PSP to be TA-088v3 tested.
  • Turn it on with a Pandora Battery. Two (2) possible results:
    1. PSP immediately turns off — your PSP is NOT equipped with a TA-088v3 motherboard.
    2. PSP stays on with the green light — your PSP is a TA-088v3, or perhaps you’ve done something wrong. Continue…
  • Connect the PSP via USB again.
  • Repeat the above steps with the 4.05 IPL. Again, two (2) possible results:
    1. If the PSP turns off immediately with this IPL and it previously remained on with the green light — this indicates a TA-088v3 board.
    2. PSP and the green light remain on — you’ve likely done something wrong. Try again.

Whatever the indicator — the TA-088v3 ain’t hacked yet.

I don’t understand. Wouldn’t you find out if you can’t use pandora. You can’t run homebrew under official, so how would this work?

run the homebrew on an already hacked psp. then it makes a semi-pandora, thats soul purpose is to see if you have the new mobo.
so, if your having trouble pandora-ing a PSP, you can use this to see if your constantly messing up, or if its just unhackable (for now…)

This basicly makes an executable that tells the PSP to turn off. The TA-088v3 will only execute the 4.05 IPL therefore when you run the 3.95 based IPL it doesn’t do anything. This is a really dirty hack that doesnt really get us any closer to having it hacked unless Dark Alex got somewhere with the checks to do this.

“Dirty hack”? Well, we are all waiting for your “clean” contributions to this problem. Until you start releasing your solutions, please shush and show some respect to DAX. This guy is a legend, who are you? I just hate pricks, sorry.

Eh, not to be a jerk, but DAX isn’t a legend. It’s good what he’s done for cfw, but otherwise he’s cost sony millions of dollars. (I know they prob deserve it). But just saying.

Without DAX there is no PSP today, cant’ you understand all that hype about hacking alowed this console to survive? What can better push your product, than massive undeground scene with all of it’s hacks. By the way – look at Sony’s strategy with PSP GPS unit. Product is not marketed, still selling a lot and there is NO OFFICIAL SUPPORT for it. No sony version of PSP Maps or what not. Do you feel me? They are admiting their acceptance of solelly homebrew as a software support suplier for their product. And that is just a small example. Wake up!

You’re only stating one side. What about the fact, that sony’s had to make updates that fix small mistakes that they made. What about the loss of mny game companies due to piracy. What about the fact that sonys limited certain updates due to them being afraid of a new homebrew exploit coming about. It is somewhat true though, it seems homebrew has caused the psp to evolve into newer versions.

Why not just place DC7 and pandora in the psp and when it doesn’t turn on you have a TA-088v3.

I’m selling my TA-088v3 on ebay right now..

Because as mentioned above this lets you know if you are infact just messing up the DC7.

See what your saying tho, if people can do this test thean they should be able to use a DC7.

Its great tho DAX has obviously made some progress and released this too help others

Honestly I fail to see the point in this “identifier”.

“you can use this to see if your constantly messing up” ARE YOU KIDDING ME ? Since you still need a PSP running custom firmware (AND A PANDORA BATTERY I MIGHT ADD), what, is, the, frigging, point of this app ?

In my humble opinion, this is fucking useless… I respect Dark Alex’s work and all, but this isn’t very helpful. At all. Does your PSP come with v4.01 preinstalled ? Unhackable. Comes with a mic ? (3000 series) Nope, still nothing.

So, I just got a Madden Blue PSP, came with 3.95 pre-installed, So I should be in the clear, right?

Is this “App” for the 3000(Brite)? Is its purpose to see if the 3000(Brite) you have is hackable?…or is this for the slims and phats.

Yeah, it seems like you would already know if its a 3000 series, just by looks and stuff… does this mean some 2000 series may have the 3000 series board, or what?

No. They stopped making the slims over a month ago.

This is the most ridiculous and convoluted app that I’ve seen for post 3.71 psp…

I could see maybe an app that just ran on your PC and checked the PSP via USB… but to go through all this trouble just to find out if something’s NOT going to work…

…doesn’t make any sense.

I love Dark Alex’s work… don’t get me wrong. But this was just a waste of time.

As many of the people above said: If you wanted to know if Pandora was going to work on your PSP… all you would have to do is try it. It’s no more complicated than running this app would be… so why go through the trouble of running this and THEN having to do the real thing?

I was just thinking about this identifier…i have a unhackable psp…when this showed up it told me that dark alex is close…think about it…he made an homebrew app that runs on the ta-088v3…so he is close…so stop dissin! because of him most of you can play homebrew..so show some respect;)
