Rumour: PSP Firmware 5.0 (Beta) Available for Developers

greg | September 29, 2008

According to the fine folks over at pspgen, Sony has issued firmware version 5.0 beta to legitimate PSP developers. This will of course allow commercial developers to adapt and ready their games for the next major firmware revision. Per the moment, the details are somewhat scarce…

For starters, pspgen reports firmware 5.0 will include these three updates:

  1. Direct access to the PlayStation Store
  2. A new RSS reader
  3. An integrated “snapshot” tool; similar to FuSa screenShoot (?)

And that’s all we know for now… With respect to a release date, that also remains unknown. It’s speculated to hit around October with the release of the PSP-3000. Whatever the case, I certainly hope 5.0 sports a little more bang than those 3 specifics.

well, I wouldn’t assume it’s useless quite yet… There aren’t much details. Hopefully Sony will prove us otherwise and it’ll kick some real ass.

With all the homebrew available at our finger tips most firmware is pretty much useless. Another point is that there doesn’t appear to be that many games coming out right now on the market for PSP so i’m sticking with my CFW. I agree whole heartedly with pfffff.

Firmware 5.0, already. This does seem a bit strange since there has not been many 4.xx updates, but in a way, if the psp 3000 is radicaly different (inside) then the 2000/1000 series, perhaps its legit. Also, i do believe that the older psp’s updates will be mostly cosmetic (fake outside) with a similar core or the older firmwares, while PSP 3000’s firmware will be signifcantly different. Call me crazy, but I doubt Sony wants 5.xx’s true core on hacked psps.

It’s not sure that PSP 3000 wouldn’t be hackable and even if it is am sure that FW 5.00 will be almost the same at least for PSP 2000 and 3000

Only for the 3k series PsP? Personally, I highly doubt that especially if that means every PSP owner must buy a new PSP in order to continue playing newer titles.

To know that Sony is making some progress and continues to support the system is great in my opinion. On another note, it only confirms my theory that Sony reps monitor sites such as this one and various others to help them see what consumers want out of there system. Obviously, they won’t allow you to save games to the memory stick with ease, however, they may continue adding more features into the firmware if there is a great demand for it. To finally add a snapshot feature is a long and overdue move, but good to have. Who knows what homebrew software Sony might integrate next?

PSPTube(flv player)would be good but I really doubt that it’s possible to happen

These firmware updates suck ..lol .. Doesn’t Sony know that we want a avi, mpeg, & flv player… or perhaps other cool things .. I mean a link to there store ..and rss feeds ..alot of us dont have wireless internet anyways ..so its meaningless to a majority of PSP users …. but anywho ..maybe they will get it right one day.

That`s right!

We all want an universal video player for psp (a very good working!).

Sony you can`t fail on us like this!

Also free talking from PSP to PSP in new model too!

They should give the firmware to homebrew devs and let them create cool ideas for the PSP. I know they’d get much cooler stuff, and the Flash would be full even for slims. I know Sony’s too stupid or blind to see all the cool stuff homebrew devs do, and to implement them in their firmware, but I guess they finally got the screenshot thing?

a new RSS reader? omg sony, Oh Em Gee.
I dont even know wat RSS is, nevermind use it. How about a web browser that doesnt suck? a media player that can play Xvid? And for christ’s sake sony, LET US WATCH YOUTUBE VIDEOS. this is BS, firmware5 and its still the same as fucking 3.9.

I sound like im ranting, but honestly, who here agrees with me?

You don’t know what RSS is?
oh, Ell Oh Ell…

IMO homebrew needs to be somewhat embraced, similar to what the NDS is doing (the cart that has the micro SD slot..) – only then will there be breakthrough progress..

All we need now is a source leak then homebrew devs can harness the true power of psp

If im not mistaken, they also had ign saying that there was going to be a thing that was going to allow you to play ad-hoc psp games thru your ps3. they confermed it for japan for games like monster hunter portable 2nd G. I REALLY hope thats a feature that they’ll get to us as well for our monster hunter 2 and such.

If this is all the features I wont even bother updating. All the 4.xx updates have been really stupid, 4.00 Added a stupid search bar, 4.01+ fixed what they broke in 4.00 and made support for PSN titles… If they could make something we need, That would be great… Maybe add homebrew support but no isos or emulators… They wont do that because “It would lower game sales” But it would higher system sales, Most people buy psp and mod them anyway… PSP 3k=Minor updater. DSi=Huge improvement

EPIC fail.

Come on, Sony, we need something like:
Flash 9 in the Internets Browser
