ExultPSP v2.2 Released — Ultima VII on the PSP

greg | August 31, 2008

It’s said to be the greatest CRPG of all time — Ultima VII. Black Gate/Forge of Virtue and Serpent Isle/Silver Seed are indeed appreciable; but not only that, both are now supported with Phantom Fighter’s latest version of ExultPSP. So go dig up your original game discs and feel the exultation.

Exult is a portable framework which uses the game’s original data and graphics to recreate Ultima 7 on the hardware of today. Exult is available for many platforms — see here.

ExultPSP v2.2. changes:

  • Serpent Isle is now playable!
  • CFW Supported build.
  • Uses the extra memory on SLIM PSPs.
  • TV Video out support for SLIM PSP: hold down TRIANGLE when booting for the menu (thanks JF/ChillyWilly).
  • Added an ingame Runechart to help you decode signs: WHILE reading a sign, hit START to toggle the chart on (you can toggle it OFF the same way)
  • The “data” directory where the assets are stored has been renamed to “resources”, this is where the music OGG files, sound effects, and everything else goes.
  • Analog mouse sensitivity can now be adusted in the config file, for those who are getting a “drifting” mouse pointer after moving the mouse. The current value of 35 should work for most, but if you still notice some drift, you can increase this one point at a time until the problem disappears (Maximum value is 48). The area in the config file to make the change is obvious.

Ultima7 Black Gate and Serpent Isle are some of the best RPGs in existence. The makers behind games like Oblivion and Baldur’s Gate credit Ultima 7 as inspiration and/or influence.

Also, saying “Fuking tibia graphics” is “Fuking” stupid.

Not to mention Ultima7 came out years before Tibia…

I tried it for a little while - it runs fast enough but takes forever to load though. One faster alternative is you can also run the SNES version of Ultima VII on one of the SNES emulators.

This version allows you to have different portaits for your character, and I’m guessing that Serpent Isle is not in the SNES version, so there’s a little more here. That may be the only two differences between the games.

The SNES version is horrible, and gutted compared to the PC version. It is simply awful what they cut to make that fit in the SNES’s puny specs.

In the PSP Exult port, only the initial load is kinda slow, as it has to create files on your memorystick. The rest of the time it is quite tolerable. A decent memstick might be in order, if you’re using a clone, you’ll get shit read/write speed as well.

I wish someone ported NUVIA (Ultima 6 open source engine, just like EXULT) to the PSP.
