nullDC PSP: SEGA Dreamcast Emulator Clarification

greg | August 2, 2008

drk||Raziel sheds some light on the development of his nullDC PSP port… First and foremost, due to the obvious PSP Fat hardware limitations, nullDC-PSP will only be usable on Slim [and future?] models.

As demonstrated previously the current speed/FPS is very slow. drk||Raziel’s notes: there is no dynarec, no optimizations, and no single MIPS assembly line in the present source. The majority of code is based on the PC version of nullDC. So with that in mind, it will definitely take time to optimize and establish a playable state for nullDC on the PSP’s hardware.

While drk||Raziel believes it is possible to achieve full speed on the PSP, it could very well be a long ass time before we see it. Or maybe drk||Raziel and the other believers will be proven wrong. Are you a believer or a nullDC infidel? Talk amongst yourselves.

Sony should do what nintendo did with the ds browser and make a ram upgrade attachment for phat users who want to experience DC on PSP

This is homebrew… Sony is obviously not a fan of homebrew on the PSP, so why would they make an upgrade for us?

A ram upgrade for phat aint ever gonna happen.

There is no external memory bus available on the psp, which means no external upgrades, and the internal ram is part of the flash chip which has its pins underneath and is totally unaccessible without making a brick in the process. so no feasible internal mod neither.

Sorry for pissing on your chips mate :)

Full speed of what? If he means simple 2D-games. then maybe it’s possible, but anybody want it? Just see the min. specification required for run the complicated commercial game(like Soul Calibur or Shenmue etc) under the emulator on the PC and you’ll know what I’m talkin’ about.
Only if he makes some kind of texture resolution compression in the game image itself or somethin’ like that, before using the ISO.

Sorry my teacher for my bad english.

oh bugger i wanted to see this on my fat, why cnt people solve the RAM problems, put the ram temp memory straight to memory stick?cause if they could set a amount then it could be converted somehow for the psp to hav better RAM, i know pc’s can do it so why not psp?

Well i believe in this project, and its future…unlike daedalus i gave up hope when they released that beta version. we haven’t had an update from them in a year, and that update is only a “tad” faster then the previous -_-. well anyways good luck on the emulator; cant wait to try it out ~_^

didnt the creator of the n64 emu say the new PSP’s ram wouldnt help the emu run any better because as anyone knows, more ram doesnt equal faster computer or processing capabilities

He is a professional programmer for many years, being only 20 now!
I can see him working for a month and finally have it done!
If it is possible to achieve full speed on the PSP he is the one to fix it…
So,just relax and enjoy it!

I’m a strong disbeliever in this, but I HOPE that he at least achieves 15-20 fps from nulldc on psp from this. And I fully disagree that nulldc is the best Sega Dreamcast emulator on PC, because the only version that isn’t buggy is 1.0.0 which doesn’t have good compatibility and the 1.0.6 version is crappy because it will randomly not read isos and/or corrupt the flash files.

Besides speed, what about controls? The dreamcast controller had 2 joysticks, a d-pad, 7 buttons, 2 triggers, and the saving device.

Comment by Risonhighmer
2008-08-08 15:46:15

The dreamcast only has 5 buttons (A,B,X,Y,Start) 2 triggers (L and R) Dpad, and one joystick. The VMU (Visual memory unit AKA memory card with a screen) doesn’t matter all that much in the emulation of the dreamcast, all it did was show unimportant stuff on the screen, and there were buttons on it, but they could only be used when they were out side of the controller memory port.

I don’t think it’s possible to achieve fullspeed on a psp. The dreamcast had more power than a PS2, and ps2 on psp will NEVER be possible (Don’t quote me on that)

I’m sure it’ll make good progress though, it’ll be cool to see how this turns out.

Then again, I suppose it should be obvious that it’s gonna be damn hard to run, with the Phat having a serious RAM limitation.

And yeah, what in the hell ever happened to Daedalus? >_>

um, if it’s only possible on the slim, and probably only ever going to be fullspeed (eventually) on the new (assuming they upgrade the hardware) slim, and the new slims are pandora-proof, aren’t we kind of fucked anyway?

But yeah tons of support, just ’cause it’d be awesome.

chanka was fastest dreamcast emu on pc but unstable, lots of bugs and unfinnished code, the other dc emulators are simular but slower to run,tho better graphics emulation.

the psp cant ever run dreamcast unless theres a highly optimised windows emulator that has been coded for easy port.

same thing with ps2 and xbox 1 ..
you could get near any games system on psp but the psp limitations hold it back,i do however think the psp could do dreamcasr full speed or at least with light frameskip.

but, untill these consoles are fully emulated and highly optimised its a no go.

zsnes, best snes emu for windows is high optimised but not very portable so a no go on psp.

sega saturn is fully emulated now but would require a beast to run as it has many cores like ps2.

just get snes done correctly and mabe even get project64,new version due soon ported to psp and we can all be happy.

For some reason people seem to think it has 7 buttons along with 2 analog sticks and the triggers and dpad. Some people are extremely dense.

Well it has been a while since the first post. Hvae not seen anything yet so hopefully they are still trying to get it working. Dont know how far anyone has gotten or if they are stuck but, if they have a PSX to PSP converter (take PSX games and make them a actual PSP game) then it may be possible to make a DC to PSP converter right? Why not go with that? A Emulator is good for Roms. They dont take up that much space. But if you have a Converter, you can make that into a EBOOT file like the PSX games. I got a ton of my PSX games for my PSP and it works perfectly (Granted some games dont work out all that well MK Trilogy being one of them). Also, think, the buttons are almost the same. if you look at DC and the PSP: Digital and Analog controlls, Start, 4 buttons and 2 shoulder buttons.
Hopefully I have given any encoders and makers some ideas if they were looking for any.
