PspStates Experiment for the PSP Slim *Updated*

greg | July 2, 2008

Update: Dark_AleX perfecting his work further with PspStates Experiment v2…

  • Fixed important bug in inter-thread code (semaphore wasn’t waiting due to interrupts disabled), that caused the load state to not be completely read in some cases. This caused black screen after state load (unless you just saved that state, in this case state was still in ram), or even worse, game not working properly due to partial load.
  • Added states per game basis. The controls are slightly different: old controls now do a local savestate/loadstate of the game, while pressing additionally select button will save/load a global state. See instructions for more info.
  • Fixed bug that caused normal sleep mode waking up immediately.
  • UMD discs and ISOs in normal UMD mode are now supported. However, they require to nullify umdcache, by flashing one file, read the instructions below.

And courtesy of Demonchild, the PspStates tutorial.

Nothing pisses me off more than having to advance to the next checkpoint before I’m able to save my game. Yeah, you know what that’s like — dinner is getting cold, people are yelling for you to hurry up… Really it never ends; that is, until now… Dark_AleX has unveiled his latest & greatest project — PspStates. Save your game in its exact state — wherever, whenever.

I strongly encourage you read the included documentation before using PspStates. That covers installation, usage, and other things you should know.

PspStates is in the experimental stages of development; bugs are likely to exist so you shouldn’t rely heavily on using it to save your game state, not yet anyway. Try it out and leave your feedback below.

most of the writings I have told people to write strictly prohibits that…

But that’s because my higher power has a language that is hard to understand as it has a fourth and fifth dimension.

Won’t happen, read the docs. It works by first copying the ram to the extended ram then writing to the mem stick to allow for a shorter pause.

Errr….

whats the point?
You can already put the PSP into standby mode, this pauses whatever game you are playing.
How long is your PSP outa your hands for anyway?
Standby mode is more than capable…
Thanks DAX, but no thanks!

Comment by Bardiel
2008-07-02 18:21:26

yeah.. thats saving your state temporarily.. until you start back up again. Imagine being able to go play a different game completely, or retrying a jump over a ledge over and over again, without dealing with continue points. If you ever play ROMS with savestate support, you know how great it is.

Have you ever seen the movie “Next”? There’s a few scenes where he dodges an entire clip from a handgun. You know how? Because his power is similar to that of savestates. Screw up? Do over. Passed? Save over it. Screw up after that? Repeat. It’s for those pesky hard-start-over-if-fail kind of times.

Some people have that problem, others don’t. It’s a simple fact of life

and go to your local church, you haven’t prayed enough this year.

random question: if this uses the extended ram what happens if the game already uses that ram too?

Comment by ALIENWARE
2008-07-03 02:02:41

The UMDs use that extra ram, that’s why you can’t use this on UMDs ,only on ISOS and CSO,cus they don’t use that extra ram

Comment by rolando
2008-07-03 02:10:04

i’ve already tried it. the sound is a bit messed up, and if you did a savestate, exited the game, then did some stuff in your psp (musics, web browse, whatever), then played the game again it wouldn’t load the from the savestate. so it only works if you won’t exit the game.

but i tried it with my Sega Mega Drive and i finished the whole Sonic series in just an hour. i’ll try it with my friend’s Dance Dance REvolution Pad and see if it works.

Not to sound like a dick (actually, yes, to sound like a dick), but I inquired into the possibility of such a piece of software some time ago and noone else seemed interested. Granted that was on pspmod.com and not here but still…

Anyway, this pleases me greatly. Just a shame that unpaid hackers must remedy what amounts to widespread piss-poor software design. You can’t save at any time in the vast majority of PSP games; it’s a portable system, fools!

Not everyone wants to pay lots of money for a Slim version when they have a fully working phat version that does the same thing. The only real difference is that the Slim has a TV-Out port on it and even that is rubbish seen as games look stupid on a TV.

If we were all wealthy, then OK, you would have a point and we would all have Slim versions.
