Stakker PSP FiNAL BETA Released *Updated*
greg | May 30, 2008
Last we saw MK2k showcasing Slembcke’s chipmunk physics library on the PSP. Today, MK2k serves Homebrew Idol with that potential dope factor I spoke of—
Stack, destroy, and claim your spot online. Exercising those skills will earn yourself bragging rights when you assume the #1 spot; thus, reigning Heavyweight Stakker Champion of the World.
Ready; set; get your stack on.
Stakker features:
- Heavily physics-based Gameplay
- Online Score System
- view and upload your best attempts to mess with the best in the world!
- You can also point your web browser to http://stakkerpsp.mk2k.net/scores/
- (Sidenote) Like to cheat or hack that little online score? Okay do so and I’ll take that down. I’m here to develop games not hunt hackers down. You have been warned!
- GameShare
- Send this game over to your friend’s PSP and have a nice fight for the first place in the online list
- MP3 Playback
- automatically loads your music files in mp3 format from ms0:/MUSIC
- plays back 44kHz mp3s in all bitrates you could think of
- skip tracks, stop and start the player right in the game
Update #1: Requests in, Stakker Update #1 out:
- Swap Controls implemented (you can choose between D-Pad and Analogue handling)
- Reward system made easier (you get points in the following manner: +1 +2 +3 +4 +5 +5 +5…)
- Pressing Down lets the blocks fall 3x faster
IMPORTANT: Letting a block fall faster directly on the platform could result in the situation where the block goes “through” the platform, and you get -10 points, that’s because of the simulation being fast forwarded by the factor 3.
Update #2:
- New feature: put a JPEG image called theme.jpg in Stakker’s directory and the image gets loaded as your new background (standard size is 480×272)
Update #2 SE:
- If your PSP analog stick is messed up for whatever reason, grab Update #2 SE. It doesn’t utilize the analog; instead, hold SELECT and press D-Pad Left/Right for song change, Down for Stop, and Up for Play. I’m looking at you Scuba Steve.

finally a kickass homebrew game. and its even more fun when listening to technologic by daft punk :p
dammmmm…. this is 1 sweetttt homebrew app. Keep it up =]
i wish we could make themes for this looks boring after playing it a while. more vibrant scheme would be nice
Themes is a small problem, because of the Gamesharing implementation, everything has to be in the EBOOT.PBP executable.
But there is a way, let’s say if there is a theme.png sized 480×272, the game could load it instead of the internal one…
well, i think i’ll implement that quickly, stay tuned.
yea like the tetris homebrew then we could just insert custom pics of the same size with the same title. nice game btw. and i will definately utulize that feature if you decide to implement it.
Ok, your request is implemented right now, wait for Update 2 getting in the news on here or just go to the forum.
How does the thing shoot…. you hit cross and it shoots at the top of the screen, you hit nothing and it never comes…..
never mind
I found a glitch i think… I accelerated a piece so fast it went too far into the floor and counted as a fail :/
This is already stated in the forum and here in the news:
IMPORTANT: Letting a block fall faster directly on the platform could result in the situation where the block goes “through” the platform, and you get -10 points, that’s because of the simulation being fast forwarded by the factor 3.
Aye a saw that after…..and felt stupid…….Any chance in a newer version having a mode where you try to stack it as high as possible without a fall?
like free play mode or something, yeah, that’d be cool
The game at the current state is a bit tailored to my idea of the gameplay and how a level works (building up, then destroying and no scrolling etc.). A free play mode would also mean that an undefined mass of blocks populate the screen and not only that, populate the physics simulation, this can directly lead to a big problem for the calculations that are done inside. So, let me assure you that I heard what you would like to have but please bear with me that it could take some time to get it done.
This looks way cool. Nice work.
I must say you did a amazing job. Many people don’t understand how hard it actually is to make these type of homebrew games. I’ve been enjoying playing this game, i’m quite addicted to it at the moment, haha. but anyways, great job, i look forward to seeing more games/programs.
I cant make it work, Im on 3.90m33-3 phat psp..
any1 having the same problem??
did you try switching it to the 3.90 kernel
um yeah, every kernel variation, without plugins & stuff, & nothing
What happens when you try to run it?
it turns off….
- Empty /PSP/MUSIC for a test
ok, that fixed the problem, if it helps, i had 34 songs (264mb), & no other folders in there, 2gb Sony MS
BTW thanks for the help
Ok I must say, very nice, I really appreciate the use of the Physics engine, and all in all good Homebrew, but after playing it for 15 minutes, for the love of GOD please make it a bit more forgiving.
You work sooo hard building a nice platform/tower, and you dont move fast enough, and a block just CLIPS a TINY bit of another one, and it falls… -10 points is fine, but then it makes you start from scratch and its like…… GAHHHHHHH. Also, I would rather have all the blocks fall from over the platform, then the fact that the blocks can fall from whatever… and just land outside of the platform if you dont move them (Anti-Tetris style. Then again, in Tetris, you dont WANT to touch that line XD).
<_< just my Input… this thing would be a lot more fun to play, if it was more forgiving for the stray blocks that just BARELY clip another block. A lot less frustrating at the least.
Also… Bonus things would be cool… like if you score over 100, you can temporary slow the falling blocks down for like 10 seconds or something… that would be cool <_<.
But still, really good Homebrew.
Also, the MP3 player is good, but it doesnt seam to like playing Music in folders (Ex: ms0:/MUSIC/Techno )… which sucks, Because I sort my music (by Genre) into folders, and only have like 3 mp3’s in the Root Music folder :(.
That’s right, it doesn’t search recursively through directories in /PSP/MUSIC … yet ;)
XD.
I think part of what makes this such a great homebrew… is that you actually listen and update… tis awesome.
this is the best. keep up the good work. add new modes, themes and multiplayer, and your gonna own homebrew idol.
this has to be the single greatest game i have ever played
i currently have the high score of 715 :D
it would be higher but i messed up twice
but ya
the one and only thing that i must ask for it that you change the way you change the songs
my PSPs analog stick is currently messed up and is constantly pointing down and to the left
if you could
would you change it from the analog stick to the select button and take out what the analog stick all together
Grats for your score!
I will make a special non-analog-stick build for you tomorrow :)
Here you go:
Update 2 SE (special version which doesn’t utilize the analog stick): http://www.mk2k.net/releases/psp/games/stakker_psp_update2_se-mk2k.zip
Hold SELECT and press D-Pad Left/Right for song change, Down for Stop and Up for Play.
CONGRATULATIONS!
this is the best homebrew since mario war i like it very much
hey i wanted to try this but when i try to run it on the psp the psp just shuts off what am i doing wrong??
slim 3.90m33
- Set GAME directory as 390 Kernel
- Empty /PSP/MUSIC for a test
it worked
THIS GAME REALLY ROCKS!!!!
thank you very much
good to hear that it works now :)
thanks alot
its really hard playing when it wont stay on a single song for more than 5 seconds :D
just tell me by email when you make it
ssscubasssteve@gmail.com
Hey great job?!Thanks for the game!
although multiplayer would be nice
i think the next thing that should be worked on is difficulty
each one should have its own high-score board
it should be like
-easy
-medium
-hard
-classic
i include classic because i would probably play it most :D
but before that
the sound glitch should be fixed
anyway
thats just what i think
this is by far the best homebrew made!!! the only problem i have is that sometimes when your building blocks it starts to make a noise that wont go away, its almost like a metal grinding noise, very annoying! other than that, awsome game, hope to see more updates :)
Hi, this is the downside when combining an actual simulation (physics in this case) with a game and more precisely sound effects. Thing is, internally I calculate all collisions and get the impulses of them if the impulses reach a given level, I play a sound (there are two sounds, a more silent one for smaller collisions and a louder one for the bigger collisions). Sometimes there is the situation that a box seems to always collide and collide and collide etc. and also provides a quite high value for the impulses, so the sound just get played and this really often.
I had this situation too and I think everyone who played it had it also and a good trick to get the sound stopping was to give the box a small bump (that is let another box drop on it), in most cases the repeated sound disappears.
great homebrew, really nice… congrats…
… it would be awsome if physics would depend on how big (and heavy) pieces are (on weight), so you could expand (if stacked corectly) over the platform (to left and right) with smaller pieces…
But again great game… keep up the great work… Thanks
i really like this game, but i think i’m having some trouble with it, if i try to swap controls, or i press start during the game, the screen goes blank gray and everything freezes
Use latest firmware. Put /PSP/GAME into the latest kernel mode. (you can set that in the recovery settings -> hold R_Trigger while powering the PSP on)
Kernel fault.Just set it to 3.xx and it’ll work.Mk2k,it happened to me yesterday remember lol?
As the others say, ensure your /psp/game directory is set to the CFW level and not 1.50.
Worked for me when I changed it, was getting the GSOD and the PSP shutting down on me.
this game is just..sighhhhh..probably the best hombrew game i ever installed on my psp!!one suggestion though..is it possible to have like a little screen on the right side and have an image of an upcoming block?just to see in advance the next block that is to going fall..that would be nice..=) and difficulty settings or speed settings..yaykz..hehe!anyway thanks for this great hombrew, and keep on updating this game, and i know this is going to stay on the homebrew scene!gtg..gota play Stakker!!
yes!!! top spot for me. this game has alot of potential. so many possibilities on what you can add. keep up the good work mk2k
Thanks for the positive and critical feedback so far, means a lot for me. I’m currently having a small break and actually PLAY my own game too :)
;) I wonder what kind of high score YOU can get!
See, I think your getting the Feedback you are, because your Actually listening. People appreciate it when the developer listens.
This game has definitely has my vote for the top game. I can’t seem to put it down. Great job MK2k. There does seem to be an issue with the music. Back to playin. XD
umm, this dosn’t work on 3.90 M33-3. I did everything. I put it as 3.90 kernel, emptied my songs, put it in PSP / GAME. And i also tried puting it under GAME 150. I have a 4gb memory stick. I don’t know why it dosn’t work. I also have a pandora’s battery and a magic memory stick. Plz help
Please try with a formatted memory stick first, for a start.
im honored to have my own special version of a game :D
stupid job made me lose my spot as number 1
o well
at least i was the first to break the 600 and 700 mark :)
Great Game MK2K, its alot of fun, keep up the good work.
hummm i cant get the pic to come up? HUmmm?
Could you describe your problem a bit more precisely?
That’s very nice, you’re very dedicated to pleasing the people who use this, that’s nice to see :P
imagine a free play/build mode where your pieces dont disapear and you can shoot a projectile when you choose. i would do that for hours.
My thoughts exactly, great game!
thanks alot!
DNB4EVER
:D
Yea sorry, i made a JPEG 480 X 272 and named it theme.jpg and put it in all the different folders one at a time to see if it would load and it never does, what am i doing wrong?
put it in the game’s directory, should work o_O
however I quickly hacked that feature in and tested it once. Will have a test right now again.
uhh ok you mean, ms0-psp-game-staker
witch one, the staker folder or the game folder?
the Stakker folder itself.
I tried that it still didnt work, its in GAME folder, should it be in GAME380, or is my pic too big (mg wise) or something, thanks for helping me by the way, other devs should be more like you.
i mean stakker is in GAME folder, not the pic..
nm nm i got it to work, i was typing theme.jpg instead of saving it as theme.jpg, thanks for the help, your game is dope.
Winner,winner chicken dinner!
This actually made me laugh :D
QUALITY! Im hooked, Thankyou. I have drained my Stamina battery 3 times playing this. I cant put it down. My wifes playin too. Where do we Vote? Its a WINNER.
Some Bugs I found, just reporting, there so small that they dont effect enjoyment of the game.
Bug:MP3 playing first 15 seconds than looping, over and over. This happened after hours of continous play. Have not been able to repeat bug.
Bug: The line you stack over depending on the Level is off.
Bug?:After Stacking over the line, if you dont fire your projectile and knock boxes over, you just sit there. Must go back to game menu and start again.
“After Stacking over the line, if you dont fire your projectile and knock boxes over, you just sit there.”
That’s right, this situation is quite uncommon but I’m aware of it and have to find a solution for the next update. Background of that is described in my lengthy post on 2008-05-31 05:23:12.
“The line you stack over depending on the Level is off.”
WHAT THE…?!?! Ok, if you have further informations on that one, would be nice to hear. This is the first time someone reports that bug -.-
“MP3 playing first 15 seconds than looping”
Ouch! I’m afraid I can’t do anything about this bug as it could be the mp3 file itself being a bit dodgy or just a weird situation that bugged the mp3 player engine. All I know is that the mp3 player itself is one of the best coded in the psp scene (and thus not from me hehe).
cheers!
– MK2k
I have tried this game on both 3.8 and 3.90m33. i deleted my songs and doublechecked my recovery settings but still only get a black screen then shutdown. I have a 4gig if it makes a difference, looks like alot of fun hoping to play this
Try with a formatted stick for a start. It worked for everyone having a black screen and shutdown.
Was just wondering if you could make another update. make it so you can cycle through themes. Hold select and tap r-trigger to change themes. That would be cool. theme1.jpg, theme2.jpg and so on. Maybe 5 different themes could be supported. Thanks for this great homebrew keep up the good work. Excuse me while I go get my stack on.
There will definitely be an update and I’ll built that feature in, no problem.
Hey thanks for the reply man and thanks for taking my suggestion into consideration. I thank you and the UPMS team thank you
What is the UPMS team?
Yes i’ve noticed a small sound bug, it seems when a block lands in a awkward way it gets stuck on a loud screeching noise until you throw another block on top of it.
3839 Hi – Score! Is that for real?
No it’s not, removed.
In some days I’ll release a security updated version.
IMPORTANT: I have encountered a lot of cheating attempts on the stakker online highscore. I cleaned the table and locked it. Don’t be too angry at me, there will be a security updated version out soon and I’m thinking about starting the highscore completely over, so go practise for that day (release around tuesday next week, stay tuned)!
i cant seem to get this to work on CF 3.52 M33-4 it shuts off after i run it
formating the memory stick did work with my fat psp running cfw 3.90m33 4gig stick…..not sure why i had to format but it works now so cool, very nice game can see alot of extras being added in the future top job mk2k
i know that this is a bit late to say this but great game i loved it and played it for HOURS
