Protect Me v0.91 Released

greg | May 29, 2008

As we near the Homebrew Idol finale, developer MaxTheBest shares his creation — Protect Me. A simple yet effective homebrew app wrapped around a PRX plugin. The PRX is called on-boot prompting the user to enter his/her password before granting access to the XMB. So all that filth you wish to hide from your unsuspecting friends, siblings, etc… It’s safe now — for the most part.

Installation is easy — copy the “Protect-Me” directory to PSP/GAME on your memory stick, and run it. From here the rest is pretty straightforward: install / uninstall the PRX, set or remove your password, and so forth… As per the screenshot:

“Max, you the best.” Now that my unmentionables are safely protected.

Protect Me 0.91 changes:

  • Now when the intruder inputs 3 wrong password, an alarm will be played to alert you about the thief.
  • Some bugs corrected.

if you forget your own password..can u then connect ur psp to usb and remove the program on memory card?

or no you cant, you have to access the usb connection setting in the XMB to do that … xD

its a good idea unless you know how cfw works. Then just disable the prx or delete the files on the ms and bam! You’ve got porn

eh. All true. However, Maxthebest plans to make this a flash0 plugin in a sense similar to RedSquirrel’s Alternative vshMenu. (If you did the flash0 install).

Hopefully, this can be loaded before the firmware itself therefore defeating the idea of going into recovery to bypass the plugin.

although this is a good idea and all. this only protects the psp to a minimum even if it where to load before the CFW. Someone that wants in the psp could just takeout the memory stick and bam porn. yes if it where to load before the CFW this would be great to protect the psp itself and the files on the memory stick as longs as the memory stick is not removed from the psp

Actually, there is a way to make this work even better. Install it to flash1 and add it’s path to the psp’s flash0 much like the IRshell patch does. Then with or without a memory stick in, it would load. The only way to bypass it without using pandora would be to go to recovery, activate flash0 or flash1 usb and physically remove it from flash. I suspect that once he has all the bugs removed from this, he’ll release it as a flash version that won’t depend on the memory stick or plugins menu in recovery.

i have tried it out and it is a very useful app but the only problem is if the plugin is disabled from the recovery menu it will bypass the app.

i think it’s a gamble,if the person trying to get your psp is and idiot, sure why not,but if the dude is a CFW user or knows about plug ins and stuff, just remove the memory stick boot into XMB insert the memory stick boot the installation, choose remove everything and there it got hacked, again.

OK, the “big” new stuff in this update is the alarm sound that is palyed after 3 wrong passwords.

Yes, it can be bypassed, but don’t worry I’m working on a flashed version so that it can only be bypassed by pandora ;)

Thanks for your feedbacks and comments, always helpfull and nice to hear ;)

Now that would be scary.

Plase remember that not all of us used Pandora, or have it anymore.
There fore that would mean some serious problem.

If you are going for that, than please do something like a file check.
Like: if you have a file named disable.txt in the root, the pws check is disabled.
So those who forgot their password, or inputed it wrong can recover without having to use pandora.

Also, please input a confirmation pronpt after setting the pws.

I think there is no need to hide the password when you are setting it.
It only makes it annoying.

If possible, could you set something like: the user chooses the number of digits he has to input?

Oh yeah, just one more suggestion.
Could you modify it so instad of locking every time you boot, change it so once you got the password right, it won’t ask it again for sometime.
As you know, sometimes we have to reboot or simpy turn off. (But suddenly want to play again xD)

It is a good idea except for the fact that it runs off the memory stick and if the person trying to access your psp knows this, they can take out the memory stick before booting and put it back in and not have a problem getting your stuff. If it ran from the flash0 before the booting sequence that would be best.

it does’t work for me. i put in the pass and pressed start to go back. then i clicked install plugin, then exit to xmb.
after that i tried cold-booting and it went straight to xmb, no pass thing showed up.

and yes, i checked to make sure it was enabled.
