Hackin’ to tha Beat

Posted by greg

Despite all the VAG and BJS talk, this isn’t what you think… J Brown has been hard at work reverse engineering the PSP game, “Beats.”

The often-neglected “Jamming” mode is really what’s up… Once fully hacked — it’s at about 90% now — you’ll be left with quite the portable DJ app.

Beats

J Brown’s progress is nicely documented via the source link for those interested. It details the structure of the BJS format, VAG and BAR files, as well features FreePlay’s “unbeat” tool (Windows & Linux) for extracting said BAR files. That also compiles and works on my Mac. So, have fun beatin’ it up, reeeal good.

The only one I can think of is Traxx Pad which is actually a decent sequencer if you can learn the UI (I never could). It is, though, more hip-hop themed, so kind-of limited on the spectrum.

Traxx Pad is good, but couldve been soooo much better if they gave more features in it like importing your own sounds and didnt base it on hip hop genre. I use it to make some really heavy loops or patterns then export them to FL Studio…..but then again,im using it to make dance music like drum-n-bass, techno, house. For having its limits, it does some decent things. Definately worth a look. What sony should do when they get their asses is design a full working music pro for the psp, kinda like how they did when codemasters made Music Generator for the PS1. That was great and the best one out the MG series. (By the way, to anyone wondering….yes, i have it as an EBOOT file for PSP, BUT…..it only works on 3.40 to 3.71. I dont know why it wont work on higher versions, must be something with the code i guess. And yes, ive tried everything to get it to work like switching drivers and such …..nothing. ) Guess PSP heads are just gonna be stuck with Traxx Pad and Beats for a while. Holla

what? you can’t find a girl to do that for you? you should be careful, one missplaced shot and your psp could stop working, and that would be a shame, for how much a psp costs you could get a pretty good whore. lol.

You know, I could never figure out how to get into freeplay mode in DJMax, not that I’m a big fan of Asian dance to begin with
