PicoDrive v1.40b Released: SEGA Genesis/CD Emulator Updated

greg | April 7, 2008

Battlecorps Sega CD Here’s one you may have possibly forgotten about, or perhaps you’ve never seen before… Step back into the good ol’ SEGA Genesis/CD days with developer Notaz’ PicoDrive version 1.40b.

This release is primarily bug fixes and whatnot; don’t expect any speed increase.

PicoDrive v1.40b changes:

  • Fixed sprite masking code. Thanks to Lordus for explaining how it works.
  • Added “disable sprite limit” option.
  • Added black level adjustment to display options.
  • Changed reset to act as ’soft’ reset.
  • Added detection for Puggsy (it doesn’t really have sram).
  • Some small timing adjustments.
  • Added support for SVP (Sega Virtua Processor) to emulate Virtua Racing. No recompiler for PSP version though.
  • Changed config file format, files are now human-readable. Game specific configs are now held in single file (but old game config files are still read when new one is missing).
  • Fixed a bug where some key combos didn’t work as expected.
  • Adjusted fast renderer to work with more games, including VR.
  • Fixed a problem where SegaCD RAM cart data was getting lost on reset.
  • PicoDrive now comes with a game config file for some games which need special settings, so they should now work out-of-the-box. More games will be added with later updates.

I dont think this has ever needed a speed increase. This emulator was great straight out of the door. Its by far my favorite emulator on the PSP. I beat Snatcher with this :). Always good to see a release with some bug fixes, even tho I never found any in the first one. This thing is flawless.
Wait never mind, not 100% flawless, I just remembered it doesn’t play 32x. But meh, who plays 32x?! haha.

“I just remembered it doesn’t play 32x. But meh, who plays 32x?!”

I’d like to play Knuckles Chaotix as I never got the chance too before, that’s about ti.

I downloaded this a couple of days ago from QJ.net, nothing like Road Rash on the go.

I agree with you on everything DepheCt!
It seems that the game Soul Star still does not work : (
All in all, great job on this emulator!

Is this any different to dgen

Yes, incase you haven’t noticed, it’s made by a different person, and it has a different name. Therefore its different, Savvy?

Can anyone give me a proper answer. Like what are the differences. Can it run games better or what?

PicoDrive runs most Genesis games full speed with 0 frames skipped, so its alot faster then Dgen. Also, it plays SegaCD games.

I remember when this project first got off the ground. They were discussing Sega CD on the psp and I told them to check out picodrive on the GP2x code.

Nice to see it materialize. I hate DGEN.

Why is there a boxart of Battlecorp? That game was terrible!

I’d love to see this ported by the developer to the iPhone, running properly with sound and tv-out…

I have a lot of crashing issues with VAY on SEGA CD. the music keeps going but the screen freezes. I’m on pico drive 1.35b and CF 3.80 M33-5.
thanks

I still have Sega CD (original front load design) and you know what I love it. There is nothing like playing Sonic CD on the GO … I’ll try it now.

This is a great emulator. Actually, it would be fun if someone came up with a 32X emulator for the PSP. There were some nice games like Knuckles Chaotix, Spider-Man: Web Of Fire, and the original Virtua Fighter, among others. Sweet!

omfg !!!!!!!!!!!!! no one here realises this is a 1st in emulation ,this is the 1st emu to ever run virtua racing on the sega genisis/megadrive …..

it simply just couldnt be done on pc or anything else as the dsp was simply unemulated, i cant beleve i am looking at vr on my psp .. amazing.

im pressy sure now that this emu can do 32x “!!!!!!!!!!

I always wanted a Sega CD when it was out. But it was too expensive. I now own two front loaders and a JVC X-EYE (genny/cd combo). All of them were found at my goodwill for 5.00$. :)

okay does anybody remeber rise of the dragon, or road avenger?

does anybody remeber that game that was real footage and you were a guy watchin security camaras in a coed dorm, while ninjas with crazy drills that sucked out peoples blood where kidnapping the students and you had to set off booby traps to stop them,

i think it was called night trap?

it was the first game to get banned for content in the US

does anybody have a copy of that ?

picodrive would be the perfect emulator on psp if virtua racing could run full speed as everything else is solid on this great emu.

im still really surprised to see vr actuly run,i bought an md and the game just so i could play it again as it was unemulated at the time and i had been checking emu updates for around a year on this one.

the genisis.md virtua racing is better than the 32x version ,its more of an arcade port than a remake but one draw back was fps but that was made up for and in a way helped the game become better as the speed and control were very good, this was much the same for daytona usa on saturn.

I think that was double switch, i think i still have that segacd game :D

Dragons Lair! I can play it again without the hassle of dusting off the sega megadrive and segacd!

Still can’t get Sol Star to work. Lunar Eternal Blue Freezes. Silpheed works PERFECT!!! Sweet!
And yes this Emulator IS better that D Gen in my opinion.
Great Job on this Emulator!!!!

keyblade ,i have try’d all segacd games released for segacd and they all work apart from only a few that run slowly but they all work ,check your mp3 names and also if a game is crashing in the middle of the game running ,not at a load point this means your iso is bad, if its at load point it may be your mp3s but could still be your iso.

theres really not many md or segacd games not working with pico,i had noticed quite a few EA games titles like fifa and roadrash 1 not working from my old collection of games yet when i try’d fresh rom downloads they worked perfectly.

also it could be your segacd settings within the emulator ,as some games need all segacd settings to be on when the game is loaded making the game run slow but after the game is loaded you can disable the settings.

Landstalker works!!! …sort of….
If you keep it set to accurate render, it works but the bottom ~15% of the screen is cut off. If you change it to fast render, you can see the whole screen but it will ineveitably crash after about 5 seconds.
