CTorrentPSP — A PSP Torrent Client, Duh!

greg | March 18, 2008

Here’s a first — a torrent client for the PSP from developer danzel. CTorrentPSP is ported from Enhanced CTorrent with a minimal feature set: no protocol encryption, https support, peer exchange, etc… Nonetheless, it’s functional.

But, what I’m wondering is — danzel mentions this too — why would you use a PSP to download torrents anyway? You have a PC for that.

In any event, awesome work danzel.

CTorrentPSP Screenshot

Known issues:

  • Downloads stop: this usually occurs when a download is going fast (~60k/s), the transfer stops and usually doesn’t start up again. Either wait to see if it starts itself again or quit and restart CTorrentPSP.
  • The Interface is boring and there is nothing to do while downloading.
  • The bitfield isn’t saved to disk, as such when you quit and relaunch it has to rescan all of the files for complete chunks. I don’t plan on fixing this (or any other problems).

See README.PSP for additional info.

for everyone wondering why this is useful… I’ve got 2 big ones for me personally….

1 – vacations. I dont have an ultralight yet and Im just not lugging a standard laptop around, I take my psp, and now i can d/l torrents… frickin sweet

2 – if you like me and work in government contractor bureaucracy hell, and have limited internet and certainly no un-workrelated browsing, then this is great if you can connect to a wireless network from work, which i can .

You will know the difference when you pay for your electric power :)
However the current CTorrentPSP seems to need psplink o_O

Comment by MK2k

bullshit. It doesnt need psplink, was a false assumption. Nice brew (if you need torrents however).

Good for music, not movies though. unless you can find a psp format movies. even then it would be a very slow download ( 60 kb\s)!

Comment by Jaryth000
2008-03-18 21:58:13

The average for my encoded movies is around 500MB….

(500 MB) / (60 (KB / s)) = 2.37037037 hours
If your on vacation or something…. going swimming or something… before you head out to the beach, connect to the Hotel’s Wireless, start the download, go swimming, you come back, ;) a movie to watch!

Ah…you forgot a 7…Any way this is a great app I have 3 PSP’s, a laptop and 3 wifi conections. To me this is a very interesting development.

This may even win the homebrew contest.

XD, this is a pretty nice addition but, if you say happen to download isos or csos using PSPtorrent, how would you transfer them to the psp….lmfao, kind of useless unless you read MK2k’s quote on electric power, lmaoz

Comment by SonicTheTurtle
2008-03-18 17:21:15

Why would you need to transfer it to your psp when it is already in your psp?

Comment by SWATsqad
2008-03-18 18:26:24

uncreative idiot edy… download a iso/cso image and then use pspfiler to place (extract(optional)) the downloaded file in the right place, now thats good use of this app and the filer app. extremely helpful if you are on vacation or smth. and away form your pc.

Well I only have dial up at home since I moved to this pathetic hick town where high speed isn’t available. A few times a week I travel an hour out of town for a course and recently discovered an open wireless hub in the area.

So I would find this quite useful.

Right On!!! Torrent > Download > Filer Move to Video folder > Now a utility to convert videos to psp native format on the psp and you could make the psp more self-sufficient.

Now there’s an idea a converter that runs off the psp directly. Thou I wonder how long it would take a hypothetical application to do such a job on the psp’s system.

This is great. Now, when I’m away from my PC, I can get torrents going. One question though, can I transfer incomplete torrents to my PC for further download and vice versa?

Comment by fidg
2008-03-18 21:41:32

why would you not be able to?? Cut & copy will always work….Some torrent clients will add a bogus file extention to incomplete files (Utorrent adds .!UT) but most clients will allow you to turn that off.

Well…yes, actually. PSP uses 8.2.11b wifi, which goes at best 11mb/s, WHICH IS EPICALLY SLOW!!!!

Anyway, you will only get maybe realistacally 100kb/s. And if your internet connection is someting like cable, then this will be grind.

Sorry to condradict you fidg, but I’m not. LMFAO

Reason why this is so sweet is because it allows ppl to download 24/7 and if you happen to sleep next to a computer its less noisy. Its really wicked. Plus its alot cheaper to run a psp for 24hrs than a pc or laptop. Gonna try this now. And now i have a better reason to use my 8gb memory card.LOL Thanks again

Most torrents are too big for your PSP yes, but this just shows what an achievement homebrew has come. Great app :)

Just wanted to point out that the reason for DLing Torrents via PSP would be to save electricity.

comparing the psp and pc have their own disadvantages and advantages. but what i like about it is, you can always bring out your psp when there is a wifi connection. you can’t always do that with pc or laptop. you can download while standing and moving around.
