PSP Predictions 2005 VS. Reality 2008

greg | March 3, 2008

Remember this? Nearly 3 years in the making, Tom Porter shares his 2005 PSP Predictions VS. Today — the PSP in 2008.

“The PSP is one of the most creative and powerful gaming handhelds ever devised. At its inception in 2005, many people speculated how far the PSP would go. Graphics out of the box were superior to anything the Nintendo DS could muster. It could also by default, play music, watch movies and look at pictures on the go, anytime, anywhere. Still, for some people this wasn’t enough, and imaginations set to work devising the future of the PlayStation Portable machine. This article compares the hope for the future with modern day reality for the functionality of the PSP, and its subsequent accessories.

Sony PSP WebCam (70% Reality Rating in 2005)
The Portable Sony Console has seen the release of a 1.2 Megapixel camera, along with software to edit movies and photos on the go. Unfortunately, the device was sold only in Japan to date, and the software is in Japanese. However, all PSP regions have access to the basic functions of photo and video taking. There were rumors floating around that the PSP camera would be released in other locations in late 2008/early 2009.

Sony PSP Direct Data Exchange: (75% Reality Rating in 2005)
The PSP came built in with a meager Game Sharing feature, which worked only with very few select titles. PSP Gamers hoped that in the future that Sony would introduce some sort of wireless transfer capability of music, photos and game saves over IR or WIFI. Although this is not a reality with Official Firmwares, Custom Firmware applications such as IR shell and a few independent programs allowed this. Since this primarily is a homebrew type community, we can say this has been fulfilled.

Sony PSP TV (50% Reality Rating in 2005)
With the introduction of cell phones capable of watching television around the same time as the PSP launch, there was been much speculation that the PSP may one day be able to watch TV. Again, your wish is Sony’s command, that is if you live in the pampered land of Japan. Sony recently released a 1-Seg type USB accessory that can in fact watch a special type of TV signal being broadcast in the homeland of Sony. The bad news however is that if imported to the United States or other locations, this device will be little more than a paperweight, as it does not pick up standard analog or digital signals.

Sony PSP Keyboard: (90% Reality Rating in 2005)
The lack of a USB keyboard for the PSP has been a major disappointment for many fans. To be quite honest, the reality of this back in 2005 was almost assured, as Sony itself touted around a mini-thumb pad, and almost was released. Many people speculated the PSP’s USB mode was incapable for such a device. This is not true, as all was needed being a few minor tweaks to the firmware for it to function properly. Again, the homebrew scene stepped up to the plate, introducing some custom firmware modules activating the IR port to communicate with Palm Pilot type external keyboards. Although possible on the older PSP systems, the lack of an IR port on the newer slim models render the keyboard nonfunctional. We cant honestly say there is a universal keyboard, Sony or otherwise as of yet.

Sony PSP Universal Remote Control: (50% Reality Rating in 2005)
The newer slim playstation portable no longer has an IR port, which many remote controlled devices require to operate. Despite this, several Remote Control programs have been written for the older PSP units, and can control virtually any device. Although not official Sony software, these modules work very well, and ironically enough even works with the Xbox.

Sony PSP TV-Out: (30% Reality Rating in 2005)
Back in the days of the older PSP models, there were a few creative solutions for a person displaying his/her portable system on a television. The two most conventional ways (if you would call them that) was to have a large box on the outside of the screen, projecting it into a mini optical scanner. The other way was to manual open and modify the system. Sony released the PSP 2000 series, which had TV out capability built in. Some criticism for only allowing Progressive TV output for gaming was heard, but quickly died down. A much neater solution than the old PSP, that’s for sure.

Sony PSP Hard-Drive: (80% Reality Rating in 2005)
Max Media helped us out with this unusual device. Adding almost double the weight to the system, and a big bulky battery pack, this almost forgotten accessory was the forefront of ultimate storage…back in 2006. Containing 4 GB of space, it was slower than conventional memory cards and sucked battery juice faster than a Game Gear. Today in 2008, there are bigger memory cards available cheaper than this hard-drive accessory.

Sony PSP VOIP Telephony: (40% Reality Rating in 2005)
Last but not least, the PSP Telephone. Recently, Sony teamed up with Skype to give gamers the ability to talk to one another. Not something the telephone companies have been doing successfully for the past 100 years mind you, but just another novel way of communicating via the Internet. The limitations are pretty big, need to be in a WIFI spot, have an Microphone accessory, requires the Slim PSP model… but reality non-the less. This feature will in the future hopefully become more user friendly.

And there we have it folks. These were major predictions for the PSP, and most of them discussed came true. The PSP certainly has come a long way. For sure, the PSP will still have more innovative features on the drawing board…both from Sony and homebrew programmers. We come a long way baby.”

No doubt.

I’m still trying to convince my friends that the PSP hasn’t revealed all it’s secrets yet. We are still in a wait for more surprises and I have a feeling that divx support and a capable browser (supporting AJAX) are going to be the next big thing…(hopefully I’m not just dreaming)

Man I wish I could get more excited about the possibility of DivX on the PSP…. But with stage 6 closing its doors that f**ks us out of nearly all posted DivX films. Never-the-less, I’d still be very happy to have support for it.

You missed my point jake. Where do you suggest getting DivX films now? Not many places host DivX files anymore. Stage 6 was the main site. Pretty much everything is .flv now (flash, which sucks a$$).

What? Plan out your “come back” better next time. Anyone that doesn’t have their head up their arse can admit that *most* of todays homebrew is junk. Ya I wish I could code some things, but I just don’t have the brain for it. I’m a salesmen not a coder. You have things coming out like “XmBUsB” or whatever… totally pointless. And how about all the horrible amiga emulators and other virtually unknown console emulators. If people would stop wasting their time on pointless apps then they might come out with something useful that millions of people could use and not less than 100. Or how about lending a hand to that noob making psp you tube? He can’t seem to get it right so maybe one of these other noobs should try and fix it for him. 50 releases in 2 months? How retarded.

Comment by LastmanOut
2008-03-03 22:31:44

Project 4 - Complete XMB replacement - maybe some people are tried of the XMB interface, could be better.

Well obviously someone must like all those emulators. Under Amiga emulator is lists 5,993 downloads so someone out there bought what ZX-81 was selling? (Slightly higher than a 100, you’re a sales man but just pointing it out in case you don’t get it. ) You think ZX-81 would have quit by now if no one cared for all of these older consoles and systems? Maybe you should look at the numbers listed under the respective consoles for how many “sales” or downloads have occured on each one before making any more comments or maybe you could pull your head out of your own ass and give credit where credit is due.

Well then how come Dark Alex didn’t perfect custom firmware writting and installation using sony’s official updater and updating from his website overnight then, if you’re suppose to code something and get it right on the first shot. Maybe that N64 emulator that keeps getting improved with subsequent releases should of just been a one and done?

The person coding PSP You tube last I checked keeps improving the application from when it started, just like most of the other applications on this site, you get a release version and then it just continues from there. Kinda like everything else in computers and electronics, Operating systems, started with linux / dos like prompts back in the day and now you can still have that and you can also have color and picture. WOW imagine that, over time the coding and the applications got better.

RETARD get back to your sales if you have any, your attitude one and done, wouldn’t make it even if you had more brains for writing some code, you would probably spent your life trying to write a program that’s absolutely fucking perfect without any errors or bugs on the first shot.

Homebrew, like the linux community. Apps don’t come out V. 1.0. They come out at V. 0.1. This is for people who find the functions needed. The coders owe nothing to you. They make what they want and share it. Now, go sell some condoms to your mom, k?

The emulators are the main reason I bought and homebrewed my PSP, especially for the Amiga one. You really haven’t got a clue what you’re talking about…

Comment by JimmyD
2008-03-04 09:57:40

Eh, your opinions are just as valid as my own. And yes, I have use emulators aswell. For instance, the SNES and Sega emulators are pretty awesome. I love most homebrew and I’m glad to see a couple thousand people have downloaded things like the Amiga emulator. I’ve downloaded a lot of useless apps to see what they were like, that doesn’t make it any more valid of a useful homebrew app. Going back to the other guys post about Project 4…. He didn’t even beta test it the first time, causing so many people to brick their PSP’s. Of course thanks to people like DA who can actually code some extremely awesome homebrew, we can use our recovery menu to hopefully fix that. I agree a total XMB replacement is a nifty idea and I look forward to when its finished and not bricking PSP’s. The point I was trying to convey is that pretty much everyday I show back up to my favorite PSP modding sites only to find more updates for apps that generally suck. I can’t remember the last time I came on here and said wow someone finally made that?!? I’ll download it now! Its been pretty much a situation for awhile now where its oh look, this awesome homebrew coder quit…. and theres yet another 1 millionth update to psp you tube. I know its useless to rant when you are surrounded by kids and arn’t contributing any homebrew. But I guess I’m just posting my frustrations that many others feel aswell but probably wont back me up for fear of being quoted and made out to be an a$$. Well thats fine with me, truth is the scene is slowing down, but occasionally someone will release something extraordinary and that will pep us all back up again.

your rant is pointless… if these people didn’t try to accomplish anything we wouldn’t have gone anywhere. Just because you don’t like all the emulators and homebrew doesn’t mean someone hasn’t learned how to accomplish something by reviewing someone elses code. It’s these peoples out of the box thinking that has got us where we are today, not the other way around.

I for one appreciate everything everyone has created regardless if I use it or not.

Comment by JimmyD
2008-03-05 09:47:38

If you truly believed in that circle process (someones junk taught another to code something else) then you would obviously believe in how a simple rant could persuade someone to try something new also. Some criticism is needed in order to get motivation going. My rant isn’t pointless, and perhaps it will have no good effect or outcome, or perhaps it will…. who are you to judge? I’ve said we each have our opinions, mine is most of this shit is junk and a waste of a coders time. Then again, I suppose scripting some code to get someone else’s work (i.e. calculator programs, ancient computer operating systems) is probably a lot easier than coding your own game or even something as silly (but neat) as psp vista. Which is all html code but the end result is nifty and lots of people would get a kick out of it. To sum this all up, my part in this is just as important as yours and the coders need some input from the other side sometimes. If feedback, good or bad, wasn’t produced then a lot less would get accomplished.

2008-03-05 12:15:44

… I agree to a point, but if you’re not going to offer suggestions or incite to create something new and useful bitching about it is pointless, so what I was saying is your rant provides no value, just one person’s negative outlook.

I think there is a need in the homebrew world for some joint forces projects to try to resolve some of the issues that bother us, the users. We have already seen that this is possible (remember pandora project and piKey proj). As I said in my last post divx and a capable internet browser would be cool, but there are issues that we, the homwbrew community, need to sort out. I believe that Project 4 is one of the projects that would benefit a lot from a lot of user feedback and also from more coders. There is also Bookr software which came in very useful sometime, but which hasn’t had any updates since august 2006 ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/bookr/ ). And how about sites? Even this site isn’t rendered correctly on the PSP. I think that an effort should be spend on making sites detect whether they are viewed on a PSP and modify their content accordingly. And if whe’re still at it how would you like to download homebrew in the same way you downloaded Go!Messenger, just hit download and the app comes to your PSP, no need to unpack, no need for a computer.

Not sure I’d like the PSP having a touch screen…. to much of a rip off on the DS. Not that I would care about that. But having played a DS I find using the touch screen with the stylist is kinda annoying. My entire life I have been around D pads and analog sticks. I’m happy Sony stuck with that. (remember the mods for the original Nintendo controllers, giving the D pad a “joystick”? Funny stuff now, but seriously cool back then)

I don’t think the problem is the way you put it. There is software for us to use, no doubt about it. I think that the homebrew scene is rather selfish in the way that one developer works on one project and a hell lot of sites publish his work. If we just take a look into the linux scene we notice that things are totally different. I strongly believe that psp homebrew should put some of their revenues back into the homebrew scene. I am not talking about large investments, but rather small and useful ones, like a decent platform that would allow hobbyists to collaborate at projects. I’ll give you one example, PSPTube. I don’t think anyone would mind if there was a changelog, documentation and a lot of tutorials in one place, with no need to search and search. Things could just be faster. Some of the developers don’t like to write documentation, no problem, there are hobbyists that don’t know to code, but like to write and want to help.
