Project4 Open Beta 3 Released
greg | February 24, 2008
Just when you thought Auraomega was gone; *snap, crackle, pop* — Project4 is back on! The project aiming to serve as a complete XMB replacement is back on track after a devastating loss of source code.
Contrary to a “PSP shell” which runs on top of the XMB, Project4 installs and operates directly from flash memory — replacing the XMB entirely.
Unlike open beta 1 & 2, this installation differs… Please see the always important README.TXT before continuing.
What’s new since Open Beta 2?
- Added a boot sound with option to turn on/off.
- Added an optional filebrowser background, perfect for people who find their normal background doesn’t go well in the filebrowser or gets in the way.
- Added a clock with configurable options
- Changed the code to load the EBOOT menu when entering a folder with an EBOOT.PBP inside, only applies if using the “Request” option.
- Allowed the icons to be varying sizes, giving the ability to customize the menu even more than before. Icon sizes are determined during bootup, so no editing in the config required.
- Moved the selected icon to the centre, instead of the first.
- When playing music, album art can be showed as long as Folder.jpg is present in the directory.
- Added M3U playlist support, which works in all directories above or below unlike previous versions.
- Added the “Low Key Music Player” which is like a very basic version of LightMP3 installed in the flash, when booting up the PSP if you press the left shoulder button it is loaded, and plays music in the file ms0:/PSP/MUSIC/LKMP.m3u. The clock speed is drastically reduced, making this a good option for those who use their PSPs as their main mp3 player.
- Added some notes saying how to save, and how to temp save the config.
- Changed the about screen to make it appear neater, and compacted the lists.
- Centralized the menus (mount, request, extended) which looks neater, also changed the colour scheme for them.
- Updated the default config written to comply with the updated code.
- Added a [#] to each of the options that do not yet work, these are mounting of flash3, XMB loading, and resetting the PSP.
- Added a device mounter that can mount: Flash0:/ (read mode only), Flash1:/, Flash2:/, Disc0:/ (untested but should work), Host0:/ (assuming RemoteJoy or other plugins are loaded
- A couple bug fixes…

damn..
interesting!
an other steven great work I am re. on my psp
I tried it an it says type in drive of psp so i do that but then it says verison checker failed any ideas?
You need to mount flash0, how else do you expect it to install into the flash?
you need to make a better README then. EXpect this kind of comments if you yourself won’t think like a noob. You talk way too much on your README’s yet you simply miss the important parts of the procedure.
nice work, may take this one for a spin
Looks great! May install if i get the time…
how to instal
Mount flash0 on USB, type the drive name, and let the installer do the rest for you.
installer not working
Installer is working fine, this was tested on XP, and on Vista, you have of course mounted flash0 right? Because how else do you expect it to write to flash?
i dont now how to install help
so what i do is run the +Project4 Open Beta 3 Installer And then enter the Letter of my psp which is L
And then it tell me version check failed
And don’t work
You HAVE to have your PSP mounted on flash0, it then checks the version file in flash0:/vsh/etc/version.txt, if that file doesn’t exist then you have problems, elseways it should work and you are not doing something.
How do i do that sorry i’am new at this
ohh ok thats
new it foun my version but now what
it tells me that an important file is missing how do i do it
Thanks Auraomega, You the Man!!! Nice Comeback. This time its even easier to install. WOW.
Even though you had a major disaster in losing the Memory Card. I wonder how you pulled off and released us V3.
All I got to say is I am grateful, and Thankful that you are back. Don’t know 100%, but THANK YOU SO MUCH for this release.
I dont have a version in vsh am i screwed an wat do i do bout it??
It Finds my version but tells me that an important file is missing. What do i do
can someone please answer.
I tried this…but this bricked my psp…I mount the flash0 ran the installer…but it said….error accecing to a very important fie…..it semi-bricked my psp…and i had to make a pandora’s battery ……
Drive letter of PSP :- G
Verifying version number…PSP Version 390
An important file could not be accessed…
This thing happens on every FW I try ;/
Don’t worry it says this to everyone bit it has done its job as long as you had the space. It’s not functional for everyday use but to free enough space delete the DIC folder(it’s asian fonts) and use it. there is one problem, make a pandora because this seems like it doesn’t have a revert back function.
hey, i wonder if this can be used with time machine… HMMM
i might try
i dont know since its being writen to the flash…. and time machine runs on memory stick… well owell i got pandora.
Don’t use unless you had a Universal Unbricker because this was a rush job and wasn’t explained like previous versions. Just use offical themes or use flash themes that are safer. This isn’t to safe for the average teen psp user.ps. don’t try w/ timemachine.
Just wait for a safe release.
Trust me when i say this won’t be on anyone’s psp longer than 24 hr
I could list some people if you want
Same, I already have quite a following of people. I, for one, use it all the time as its much quicker for developing on. The only people who I believe would have a major objection to using is those who like to watch movies, or those who like to pirate games and play under the more compatible NP9660 driver. Seeing as very few people watch movies on there, and I don’t really like pirates much, I think my apps are hitting the right target audience.
I tried this…but this bricked my psp…I mount the flash0 ran the installer…but it said….error accecing to a very important fie….. now my psp just loads to a blue scrreen please help
hen installation is complete, you will need to copy the theme files, plus the external KMode module (p4fh.prx) files to flash1:/P4/ otherwise you will be faced by constant BSoD errors. The default config will be written during the inital use of Project4, but if you’d rather edit it straight away then the config file should be saved to flash1:/P4/config.ini
This is really cool. I think the idea of totally replacing the XMB is awesome. I really hope that development on this continues to a level that would allow for everything to be compatible as well as being a bad-ass XMB replacement.
I would try this out.. but I have yet to see ANY screen shots, a video…. I mean… cmon lol.
how do you uninstall it. i have 1 psp and it has project 4 instaled and it wont make a pandora batter.
cool but it sucks better to use the psp xmb.
how do you uninstall it. i have 1 psp and it has project 4 instaled and it wont make a pandora battery.
help how do u uninstall
SOL u didn’t read comments first this is a bad release. To Bad Pandoras are your own problem but i sugest u use UBV4 (Universal Unbricker V4)
If you installed this without backing up your flash first please allow me to explain the meaning of the term BETA. It means “work in progress” or “not quite finished yet, be careful.”
As for the TimeMachine question: sadly, no, this won’t install. P4 open beta v2 does though.
i did it but when i turned my psp on the memorystick flashes and nothing else..eny help?
i did it! lol almost nothing works
screenshots anybody…
so do i need project4 beta installed already? I AM NOT a noob but nice brick, pandorad back to 3.71m33-3 i WANT this to work. but it wont.
I LOVE my pandora battery!
Wtf… I didnt ask how to uninstall… who is using my shit?
Wow, I don’t know HOW I installed it, but somehow it works :). I just got the file problem like everyone, and then I turned it on and it worked! I feel all warm and tingly inside :D

Nice work dude! G2B the next best XMB setup. I wont be suprised if it works better than Ahman’s IR Shell. I’m just waiting for the Non-Beta release.Cant wait dude
