Use 3.71’s Memory Stick Driver Under Custom Firmwares 3.80/3.90 M33

Posted by greg

Update: v2 of the patch is available…

  • Added to the installer the check of correct checksum of fatmsmod.prx. Use only encrypted or decrypted version of file.
  • Music, videos, etc now work.

Dark_AleX has released a patch enabling the memory stick driver from 3.71 on custom firmwares 3.80/3.90 M33. Why 3.71? Its fatmsmod.prx just plain old works better.

Instructions:

  • Use psardumper to grab ‘fatmsmod.prx’ from 3.71; encrypted or decrypted
  • Copy /F0/kd/fatmsmod.prx to the root of your memory stick
  • Copy FATMSPATCH from this package to /PSP/GAME and run it

Few things to note:

  1. it’s probably a better idea that fatmsmod.prx is encrypted because it’s compressed and uses less flash space
  2. fatmsmod of 3.71 usually works better because it has a better cache system, and usually reads on bigger blocks (sometimes 3.80/3.90 reads more data than needed — lazy prediction)
  3. however this driver uses more kernel memory, and it’s unknown if it will have any kind of secondary effect running this module in 3.80/3.90 — use at your own risk
  4. the lags in np9660 no umd mode won’t probably be solved, as that is a different problem

it’s so we can have the normal/faster xmb speed of 3.71 in our 3.80/90 cfw, as oppsed to the “slower” and or “lagged” speed of 3.80+ firmwares.

i’m pretty sure that sums this patch up.

i haven’t done it just yet, has anyone tried it ?

if so, is there a noticable difference in speeds ?

i’m sure it does work, but i’d like to hear some feedback before i do it.

it works fine but be warned
you can’t see your videos, music or
    pictures anymore
as far as fixing the mem stick lag
    works well
“so do this at your own risk”

how? it doesn’t mess with the flash0/1. So, just delete the prx from your psp, and fix the txt file, and it should be fine.

It’s not a plugin, it does write to your flash0. Have you done it yet? Because if you did you would know that. By the way, it appears to have semi-bricked mine too. I’m using the sleep-fix multi-ipl installed by upms. I’m still able to get into both recovery mode and the pandora menu. But the xmb won’t boot.

Version 2 works for me! Just sucks I had to pandora back to fix it. Re-entering my static IP is a major pain. Yay DaX! He actually fixes things in a timely fashion.

I’ll stick to my 3.71, There is nothing special about 3.80 or 90, Now if sony comes out with a cool new FW that enables you to use the PSP on the TV or something, or anything better then a Online Radio, then I will update to a new FW, until then, 3.71 is the best.

    Thanks Russian_man for the megadownload.
After updating to 3.90 M33-2 my 4GB mem card could not be used at all (Formatted to fat16 to speed it up). I had to use my original 32MB one to apply this patch to get it working again. Now all iso and movies work as they did in 3.71 M33 on my 4GB card.

Before this patch I seen no problems, or slow downs on 3.90. I used and I still see no difference.
There also seems to be no one that can clearly explain what this is supposed to do… I keep hearing it makes the MS read faster, but where… on usb, in game?
    It seems pointless atm.

Yes the 3.8 and 3.9 fatmsmod.prx run ISOs with hickups but very smooth with 3.71 so that is why DA try to replace it with the one in 3.71

i’ve read it does work on the slim aswell.

i think it’s worth doing if your MS is slow like most peoples in 3.80+

i’m going to do it later, can’t wait to see the speed difference.

I still don’t see any speed increase after applying this patch. Although it does give the impression of only workable on fatpsp and possibly on slim as mentioned above, it only really says it speeds up plugins for some users experiening lag when loading compressed files and plugins from the memory stick, an issue that did not exist in previous firmware releases so it says.

The patch allows users to load the original 3.71 fatms driver on 3.80 and 3.90 M33 series firmware, which if installed, will resolve this issue.

So basically increased memory speed with increased kernel memory. Another guy above mentioned 4gb not working after update… I use 4gb Sandisk MS PRO and still haven’t seen anything wrong. I think it’s solely for Phat users than Slim users since I myself use a slim.

Yeah … I did the same thing …. and when I try to fix it by putting back in the old fatmsmod.prx back in it wouldnt even turn on … but I did have a phat psp battery to unbrick it. if urs is screw up … try to make a pandora ms and when ever u get ur hands ona phat psp battery just pandorize it unbrick ur psp and just turn the battery back to normal. ….

ps; I know there no such thing as a stupid question but a stupid person that ask it … if I were to give u all the files in my flash0 and u use it to replace the ones in your psp flash0 would it work? just wondering

I have 2 psp’s one at 3.90 M33-2 and the other 3.80 M33-5 and I’ve noticed a difference in speed with games. Mainly with my TA-086 PSP (3.80) it cuts off on its own and sometimes the power button does nothing. I don’t see any speed difference with my 3.90.

great peice of work imo a must for those using psptube that save the vids to ms for offline watching.. i noticed though that it can actually slow down worse if you use the uncompressed version of the file for patch. best bet use encrypted no sigcheck you can really tell a difference running stage6 vids from ms

opps forgot to mention using a slim and this works fine on everything i run.. maybe with TM you could do the 2 different options. hold - on boot = 3.8/3.9 fatmsmod.prx, hold + on boot = 3.71 fatmsmod.prx. and always remember to expect a possible brick on every single flash write even the ones you have done hundreds of times (batteries can come loose, psp’s drop, ect.)
