Project4 Open Beta 2 Released

greg | January 24, 2008

Update: Installation problems? Aura sheds some insight

…it looks like everyone fell foul of a purposeful thing I added to Project4, after the problems with bricking last time around because people didn’t read the readme, I decided to NOT make a file structure, instead I hoped people would read into it and find where the file must go. The Project4 installer has a hard coded loading path, which is ms0:/PSP/GAME/Project4, you MUST have all the files in here for it to work, next time I’ll just place this in the readme I think, and I’m sorry for any problems this has caused.”

It’s coming, it’s coming… And here it is! Auraomega has unveiled Project4 Open Beta numéro deux. Please read our previous Project4 news coverage should you find yourself asking the question, “what’s the dealio, yo?”

Auraomega notes, “the code has not changed for installing/un-installing, so if there was an underlying bug, it’s going to remain there.” How to install / uninstall and other important tidbits in README.txt.

What’s new?

Removed:

  • e-Book reader and the HEX reader.
  • pspdebug style font.

Added:

  • PSX loading
  • Screenshot function
  • Menu thread giving some background functions in Project4.
  • New menu when launching games, gives the ability to select directly what kernel you want to load in.
  • Added a function to load games in the background, although I’ve found none that work. Tagged as experimental.
  • sysDump function which is called upon a BSoD, used to check system variables.

Changed:

  • Added intraFont
  • The menu is now more advanced, you can select the location on screen icons go, and which folder they open when selected.
  • Folders with a . in them can now be opened.
  • Folders with lots of files in can now be browsed easier, instead of pressing select and up/down, just move around in the folder and the new algorithm will determine when you have run off the screen and act accordingly.
  • Universal Installer modules have been tweaked slightly so they no longer cause issues with some offical Sony savegame loading.

Button changes:

I found the buttons held no consistency whatsoever, so I decided to re-work the entire controls for Project4, these below show what all buttons do now:

  • Main Menu - Right shoulder button
  • File Browser - Left shoulder button
  • Extra Menu - Select
  • Accept - Cross
  • Cancel - Circle

In anticipation of replacing the XMB with Project4, I strongly recommend you create yourself a pandora battery with magic memory stick. Project4 is beta software — unforeseen problems may occur. Stay alert, stay safe.

Its probably best you don’t…In other words if you have to ask rather than read the many post on this subject, you have no business doing so.

Well said, I purposely didn’t make a file structure in the download because I know a lot of people didn’t read the readme in the last version, and it caused a lot of bricks (not freeing enough space was the major issue) I was hoping that for this reason people would read up and find not only where to place the folders, but how to avoid bricking by freeing enough memory.

Aura, sorry to break your balls, but I bricked on beta 1. not the installation, but the uninstallation when I chose to use the regular XMB over your poc. it does some weird thing during uninstallation. i would deffinatly change the uninstallation if you want more people to test it out [those that know the file structering].

as to “Nunya Biznass” Aura said and now I am. Well said man.

I stated that for the retards that don’t have a Pandora battery at the moment.

it’s also something that will need to be looked into as he reaches the initial release of the software.

Initial release is going to take some time. This on really differs from a full release by the name. Its already got stacks on offer and installs fine *If you follow the instructions*

Comment by Auraomega
2008-01-24 19:32:22

Yeah, I’ll personally call it a full version when I have full NoUMD compatibility, a decent/quick universal patch on all versions (the current universal hack is very messy indeed) and I have read/write access to flash2 (for patching purposes among other things). Some people, djinc for example, have already called this a full release, but in my opinion its not quite there.

Screw Bricking. If I brick its cause Im a dumbass to not reading the readme on how to install it. But guess what, Im got Insurance, lol. Pandora Insurance. I brick so many times, too many too count.

Thanks Auraomega for even releasing it besides all the negatives from it. I appreciate what you do, among all the other coders, like DAX.

No one gets anywhere without bricking. Just ask how many times Auraomega brick his PSP, or even ask DAX. And, yet people gripe about bricking. HA HA don’t complain unless you made something yourself.

Thanks again Auraomega, and to all the other coders for all their hard work + Bricking & Unbricking.

If it wasn’t for Pandora none of this would be possible, even new custom firmwares, just think about it.

2008-01-24 19:54:34

Yeah, Pandora is a necromancer in PSP terms, its brought mine back from the dead more times than I care to remember.

I’ve bricked my PSP, what, 20+ times just finding patches, I even screwed up so badly once that nothing would be read off of the memory card. Anyone fiddling in the firmware knows the risks, and should have sufficient backup. I also run the Free Unbricking list on my website, so I’ve made a good backup for people who are too stubbern to do it themselves.

OK, I installed and flashed it a few hours ago on my slim PSP with CFW 3.71M33-4. Everything went well and the cistom XMB showed up. I played around a little bit and thought it still needs some layout work and it also looks a little dull. What I for instance don´t like is the fact that when I choose a homebrew, this custom XMB takes me to the file browser, from where I have to choose the Eboot to get the homebrew started. So I decided to uninstaal Project4, and there it went wrong: the first few checks went OK, but at the unpatching check it said failed, and I got stuck with a BRICK (my first time ever). Fortunately I have a Pandora and a FAT PSP, so after an hour or so (I never unbricked a PSP before), my Slim PSP was up and running again with CFW 3.71m33-4. I don´t know why I got a brick, but it could be because I had a flashed custom theme, which I didn´t disable.

I think you caught on to something. Im currently at the Lauching, and its been over 20 mins. What I think is we should all disable our custom things, and revert back to the original. I have 3.80-mm5, and installing the 3.80 one, and not the Universal. Im going to manually turn it off, and Brick it, hopefully it doesn’t. But Im not worrying about it.

Anyway, Im going to try to re-install it with the original theme over again.

Listen guys, i get past the launching 3.52 installer, and press X to confirm the install, but once it gets up to “battery check” it says failed…. what does this mean? do i have to mess around with the flash? I also have a custom apple theme installed (replaced many files in flash), does that have any effect?

Comment by cboushell
2008-01-25 21:35:49

it means that your battery is not charged up enough, the same way you need to have your battery charged up to install other things. I think it needs to be at 78% or higher, my install failed at the battery check the first time. After letting it charge, it installed perfectly. Now if I could only get my .cso files to load from MS.

Comment by djinc
2008-01-29 16:21:40

75% or higher… And CSO’s do work but you need to set the UMD driver to the Legacy one

“I decided to NOT make a file structure, instead I hoped people would read into it and find where the file must go.”

I grew up during a time when it seemed computers were intentionally made complicated, so that you’d practically have to learn some basic DOS programming language to be able to use them. I really dont see point in purposefully complicating things when they could be made so easy. It shouldnt be a damn Easter egg hunt. Computers and applications are all meant to be tools used to make life easier and simpler. Luckily the business element eventually took over and computers were made easy to use by the average person. Its not supposed to be some secret dork club….

Don’t be such a fool. If someone isn’t smart enough to look through the readme, and they brick or something, it’s their own damn fault.

Perhaps if there were no file structure, AND no readme…. I’d sympathize. But, that isn’t the case.

Well, I finally got it to work, and I am on 3.80mm5 and its on my SLIM!!! I read the readme. And, this is where I put it. ms0:/PSP/GAME/Project4/ and have all files in that folder. Make sure your Kernel is set to 3.80 before you run it. You can set it at the Recovery Menu.

And, yet it was so Easy, lol…. OMG!!! It Works, It Works….

Now lets see who else can’t get it to install LOL!!!

Thanks Again, Auraomega

I’m running 3.80 M33-5, I’ve set the kernel at 3.80 and disabled the custom theme, I haven’t used up any flash space, but it’s stuck at “Launching 3.80 installer”. I left it on overnight, but it still wouldn’t work.

To those who cannot get past the installer.
I had this problem too. Just make a folder in GAME called”Project 4″ Exactly like I typed it. Place all the files in there from the project 4 beta zip except for the readme . Have at least 78% battery charged and it SHOULD work.

I don’t know if this helps or not. But what I did was have all the files in Project4 folder. I also made double copies of the PRX’s, and put them in the seplugins. And, it worked. Maybe the prx’s needed to go in there, maybe not. But I had them in both places on my slim, and it worked on 3.80mm5 with a full battery.

I’ll check back here later, and see if anyone has anymore problems I can help with.

Warning for 3.80mm5 users. You can install with the same method I mention to get it to work. If you are going to install it, and later on Uninstall it, you can’t it fails. And, U will end up with a brick. So therefore Warning…. I mean Warning…. Don’t install this, unless you have a Pandora Ready. If you don’t, and you install it you will be shit out of luck… Unless you have someone can help you unbrick it.
