Charge Control 0.1.0 — Take Control of the PSP Battery Charge

greg | January 15, 2008

Another from developer Weltall… Charge Control is an extremely simple plugin written for your convenience. It’s responsible for two functions: disabling & re-enabling the PSP battery charge.

When disabled and using the AC adaptor, your PSP will not charge the battery — for whatever reason you may have. The charging status will remain set until the PSP is powered off completely.

Disable: L TRIGGER + R TRIGGER + VOL down
Enable: L TRIGGER + R TRIGGER + VOL up

Features:

  • [ALL] First release
  • [ALL] Builds for 3.7x and other firmwares
  • [ALL] Works at low priority and combinations are checked one time every second
  • [ALL] It’s possible to enable and disable battery charging immediately

Download: Charge Control 0.1.0

I can give you a reason, that is if you even care, Allot of people dont know that when you Charge and recharge a Battery, It loses Life, everyone thinks OOOO It will work forever, Umm NO. As an example The iPOD battery, If you listen to it for like 1 hour then immediately start charging it right after, your battery will DIE much quicker overtime then as if you Let it drain completely then charged it, So point being, Always let the Battery Drain all the way before you Recharge it. That is why this will come to use, Because when I have a FULL battery and I go to play my PSP while at home, I use the outlet, and then I have to take the battery out, then put the Cover back on, so with this you can just turn it off and BAM. No having to take it out. Or charge up the battery again from the same spot every time.

uhhh…. thats not how it works. THe battery inthe psp is a lithium ion battery. These types of batteries are fond in many electronics (laptops, ipod, to name a few). THese types of batteries die whether you use them or you dont. They have a 2-4 year life sentence. thought you should know.

I’m going by USEAGE from an old iRIVER and from what others have told me. I use to use the iRIVER every day, would charge it and also keep it on the Charger, after about a few months, The thing would DIE sooo quick, I thought Hmmm WHY ? Turns out it’s because of what I just said. The Battery Cells, do not get the FULL charge, you just keep charging from the beginning and not starting a FULL fresh Cycle CHARGE. As I said I had it happen to my iRIVER, uses the same Battery as the IPOD and my iPOD lasted longer now WHY ? Because I dont charge the thing like 100 times, I only charge it when it Drains.

You are still wrong. The other person was correct mostly. Lithiums, and all variations of them, do not require you to drain the battery before charging. It has no impact on its life whatsoever. You can read the packaging on any name brand lithium rechargeable pack at a store. There are no limitations on them, which is why the lithiums were extremely expensive only a few years ago. Thats also why NiCad batteries are slowly being singled out. Dont talk like you know, when JimmyD knows best.

I dont know, my friend went thru 3 psp battieries (Original Sony ones) in a year because he uses his psp constantly, its on apx 12-14 hours a day. Me, i’ve never killed an original battery, even though I may only turn it on for 15-20 minutes a day.

What’s bad is keeping them in the charging state, not charging after 5 minutes of use.

that not true a li-ion has a half life of 500 charges regardless of when you charge it. the PSP cannot tell you how many charges u are using but the macbook displays how many charges the battery has used and it not affected by when you charge it.

On and you mentioned Labtop battery, same goes with the HP one, I left it in the Labtop all the time, the thing doesn’t even hold a charge for more then 10 min’s now, and when I first got it, I never even used it, I always used the PLUG but left the battery in, SO I guess there FACTS are wrong.

you probably over heated your battery since if the battery heats over 40 degrees it causes damage to it

no, only older really crappy batteries have that flaw. Most modern li-ion batteries (like the one in the psp) can be charged at any time you like and there will be no problems.

What you’re talking about is battery memory. It is usually recommended that you run batteries till they’re dead, and then charge them. Typically, new batteries don’t have the charge memory that older ones did, so usually you won’t have this problem anymore.

Comment by JimmyD
2008-01-16 09:35:32

Battery memory no longer exist… are you people stuck in the ice age? That was NiCad batteries. Lithiums do NOT have that problem. There is NO such thing as memory in Lithiums.

Straight from “How Stuff Works” website:
Lithium ion chemistry prefers partial discharge to deep discharge, so it’s best to avoid taking the battery all the way down to zero. Since lithium-ion chemistry does not have a “memory”, you do not harm the battery pack with a partial discharge. If the voltage of a lithium-ion cell drops below a certain level, it’s ruined.

There you have it folks. NO MEMORY!

Anthony82 is 100% correct. When you have the battery in and the AC plugged in, what happens is the AC charges the battery to 100% and then stops charging leaving the battery to run the system. When the AC recognizes a drop in the charge, it turns back on and charges it again back to 100%. That’s the way ALLLLLLLL LiIon batterys work whether in a laptop, camera, IPod, PSP, etc. They ALL work the same exact way. This program is an amazing one that WILL actually help you get more out of your battery life, especially if you use it a lot in one specific location.

Downloading this baby right now!!!

LiIon batteries are weird. Constantly charging them will kill them, it’s usually best to charge them around 40-60%, and if you aren’t going to be using it for a long time, store it at around 40% charged, so it doesn’t run completely flat, and so it doesn’t lose capacity from sitting dormant at 100% full. NIMh were the ones that were good to run down every time, LiIon’s…. you shouldn’t do it too much, once every couple months is good to make sure it’s reporting it’s charge levels correctly, that’s about it.
The more you know, etc. (Charge levels are approximated, don’t quote me the actual ones, it’s +/- 10% or something)
Nice to see more homebrew coming out, even if I can’t think of anything to do with it… I suppose it is easier than taking out the battery if you’re near a power outlett/usb port.

You lot are retarded.

Lith Ion batteries like having their electrons constantly moving. Keeping the PSP constantly charged and occasionally recalibrating the battery (drain to 50% and recharge) is recommended. Fully discharging a Lith Ion is not recommended because you will significantly reduce its lifespan.

For those with duff iPod batteries, the info is on Apples websites.

And no, Lith Ion batteries don’t suffer from the memory effect either.

Learn your batteries.

did you even look at that article?
“Li-ion batteries can even go into a state that is known as deep discharge. At this point, the battery may take a very long time to recharge. For example, a laptop battery that normally charges fully in 3 hours may take up to 42 hours to recharge. Or the deep discharge state may be so severe that the battery will never come back to life. Deep discharging only takes place when products with rechargeable batteries are left unused for extended periods of time (often 2 or more years) or when they are recharged so often that they can no longer hold a charge. This makes Li-ion batteries unsuitable for back-up applications where they may become completely discharged.”

it’s right that they must be recharged often and not let draining completely but you should not over do it.

This is going to prove useful to me :)

I do prefer to let all my battery drain simply to make sure that I play it for the entire battery, then I change it and do something else (Y) it stops me from playing my PSP for too long (Y)

Sometimes I put my charger in while playing a game making me play it longer then I dont bother doing whatever I needed to do then im behind :(

So yeah something I need to mention to you, different software releases for the PSP work for different people, this might look useless to you all but Weltall has made me happy (Y) just like his CWCheat system which is one of the best prx’s for the PSP to date (Y)

Good luck to the coder and anybody else that uses this (Y)
