Make Phone Calls with your PSP! Furikup — PSP SIP Phone v0.1

Posted by greg

Sony officially announced it for the Slim, the Noobz team officially make it happen — for both Fat and Slims! It’s beta software so please report any problems. See readme.html to get started.

Fanjita notes the audio quality needs some work, the interface needs a makeover, and video calls aren’t working quite yet. Nonetheless it’s usable and demonstrates pure awesomeness. Source code is also available for homebrew developers to advance on. Kudos team!

“Furikup” highlights:

  • It’s free software — in both the beer, and speech senses.
  • You can use it anywhere in the world, subject to signing-up to a suitable local SIP-based voice-over-IP provider and being near a usable wifi access point. e.g. with SIPGate, in the UK, you can call to your PSP from any standard phone (landline or cellphone) for just the standard local call cost, and from PSP to another SIP phone (another PSP or a PC) for free.
  • It runs on both slim and fat PSPs.
  • It uses open standards, for maximum compatibility with other phone systems.
  • You can use a Go!Cam (Chotto Shot), Talkman microphone, or SOCOM-style headset for audio input. (And even if you don’t have any of those, you can still send audio from a WAV file in a pinch).

This program allows you to use your PSP as a phone, using Voice-over-IP (VoIP) technology. We got a bit bored waiting for Sony to release their PSP phone offering, so we thought we’d do it for them. Such is the freedom of homebrew.

You can use your PSP to make and receive calls to and from other PSPs, or to other VoIP users, or even to standard landline and mobile telephones, depending upon the VoIP service that you use. Calls are generally free, or at least cheaper than standard landline rates - again, depending upon your VoIP provider.

This is an initial release, currently supporting audio-only calls, and with a very basic user interface. But it works, and that’s the main thing.

The VoIP engine is implemented as a standalone PRX, with a well-defined interface. As well as using our simple phone application, we encourage other developers to make use of this technology for other applications. We’re sure that someone can write a nicer user interface than ours, so please do. There’s also scope for plenty of other uses - such as a CFW plugin for calls within the XMB, or teamtalk-style add-ons for games etc. Go wild!

    lol, I made this working with voipdiscount..
    sound quality was lil crappy, but it worked, I called landline.. and it was free.. lol :D

    I hope a kikk@$$ GUI will come soon, with number entry, and contacts editor..

    very well done N00Bz!
    especially releasing this before the official Skype stuff! (muhaha)
    great success for the Homebrew scene!!
    we’re very very proud of you! :’)

    in addition, I tried my usb mic of talkman, and also the chotto cam.. both worked great..
    the line has some kind on noise, but the voice doesn’t skip..
    I used the SIP settings on the page of voipdiscount..
    and I just regged a new account there, and I am able to generate testcalls through the PSP without any top-up..
    the PSP won’t quit the call and kinda freezes, if the other party ends the call, if I end the call with the PSP, it works fine, I can even redial.. :D
    great fun, amazing success for a beta..
    thanks again N00Bz!

    Only about 6 hours…..
    It’s a bad standby-time for a mobile phone.

    wow what a retarded thing to say. First no phone that needs to be at a wifi access point should be considered “mobile”. Not to me anyways. Its basically a wireless phone instead of corded, but you still cant leave the “house”. Secondly, who gives a crap about battery life when a huge corporation just got f’d hard by the home brew scene? Get a clue dude, this is awesome news.

    Awesome to see that they released this.
    Me and a friend were actually talking about starting this sort of project a week or so back and going over some of the details before we got started. Not very surprised they beat us to anything.

    As always good work n00bz, and anyone else involved.

    What is the maximum range between 2 PSPs ?

    Can Morse code be used or something ? Because I don’t have a chottoshot camera for my PSP (which I hear it also comes with a mic).

    Basically, I just need a STOP and a GO sound, recorded on my PC to be heard on the other end. Is it doable ? Through Wifi I mean.

    I found that at QJ,

    “Works with landlines!

    Hey All found a GREAT free SIP provider … that allows FREE calls from your PC / PSP to land lines!! Wahoo!! In reading the “fine print” it will give you 300 minutes:
    _________
    * Max 300 minutes per week of free calls, measured over the last 7 days and per unique IP address. Unused free minutes cannot be taken to the following week(s). If limit is exceeded the normal rates apply. With your FREE DAYS you can call for free to all the destinations listed as free! when you have no FREE DAYS left the normal rates apply. You can get extra Freedays by buying credit
    _______

    site is voipcheap.com

    sipcfg.ini files layout is like this:

    server=sip.VoipCheap.com
    username=xxxxxx
    password=xxxxxx
    stunserver=stun.voipbuster.com
    stunport=3478
    input=file

    contacts file is like this:
    House,sip:1″area code”"phonenumber”@sip.VoipCheap.com,mr,man

    no quotes and no spaces in the phone number it should be something like this 18885551212 at least for calls in the US not sure about outside of the US

    PSP is Custom FW 3.71 M33-2
    Kernel set to 3.71
    App placed in GAME folder

    WILL ALSO WORK if:
    Kernel set to 1.50
    App placed in GAME371 folder

    I hope this helps you all! So far it’s the only one I found that gives true free calls to landlines!! And I’ve been looking since this was released last night! :-)

    Oh yeah … also if your press your “select” button on your PSP you will get “detailed” info when you place a call”
    I tried it and it actually works with Landlines. Credit goes to Dartan

    gregerson316;

    I followed all those directions but the contact list does not show anything. Then my psp will just freeze and turn off by itself

    This is how my contacts.txt file looks like;

    SIP test,sip:10000@sipgate.co.uk,sip,test
    nickname,sip:number@sip.server.com,firstname,lastname
    landline,sip:House,sip:17876278@sip.VoipCheap.com,mr,man

    Am i doing anything wrong?

    “SIP test,sip:10000@sipgate.co.uk,sip,test
    nickname,sip:number@sip.server.com,firstname,lastname
    landline,sip:”

    that should stop one issue for you

    This has nothing to do with this app in the remote, but, I’m just sick and goddamn tired of the ads on this site. It’s not bad enough that I have to mute my speakers when ads play audio, to which I can’t mute.

    Also, the fact that EVERY damn time I come on here, I get sent to another site, with the sole purpose of getting me to look at their fucking ads.

    Enough! psp-hacks should be ashamed of themselves!

    Hey, dipshit, you can have ads on a website without taking someone to an entirely different website. You can also have ads that don’t have sound on them.

    Oh, and let’s just say that if anyone was going to give someone five bucks, it’d be me giving someone five dollars, as I actually have money, money that wasn’t given to me, you cunt.

    Use voipcheap.com. I live in new york and it works fine for me. There is a list on the website of the places you can call for free, which include north american landlines and mobile phones. You will only be allowed to place a few free trial calls. After that you would have to buy credit to continue calling to the free locations. (my bad if that made no sense whatsoever.) What I do is use up all the free trial calls and make a new account. It’s worked for me once already.

    Is anybody here using voipcheap? If they are, might you give me an example of what the contacts file looks like. I tried using the one posted above and nothing will show up. Everything works fine, just no contacts..

    Nevermind I got it to work. If anyone is having any problems with the contacts file and you are using voipcheap, let me know. Btw, it works great. =D

    just create folders GAME150 and GAME371 in the PSP folder. And obviously the game150 folder is 1.50 kernal and the game371 is the 3.71 Kernal. You can also go to recovery mode (hold R while turning on PSP) And go to config and set the kernal that way.

    Hey, a cool interface woud be something similar to the Codec screen on MGS games. Specialy as a background to videocalls. Get to it homebrew genious.
