PvP’s Internal USB Mass Storage

greg | January 3, 2008

Update: You may have noticed acidmods.com is currently inaccessible. My good friend CyberPyrot says it’s only temporary and they’ll be back online sooner rather than later.

My only question was, do you still have access to the UMD drive? That was quickly answered and sadly you don’t. So if you’re willing to sacrifice that, then you may add 30GB+ of storage — internally! Otherwise you can rig a similar setup externally with an iPod. Yup, an iPod. Tutorial coming soon…

Nice mod, PVP. And I should also give props to CyberPyrot for his feature in February’s issue of Official PlayStation Magazine.

Still it’s a nice looking mod.

The best part of it is that it is a gate way for future developement. Perhaps it will inspire people to develope a better version of IRShell

You don’t have to use IRShell. In fact, a slight hex mod of CFW would let you change the directories that it looks in (MS0:\PSP\GAME150, ETC) to the flash. :)

In fact, when the tutorial comes out, I’ll try to write a tutorial for modding CFW to supporting it, if I can afford a drive.

Hell, at this rate, we might as well stop calling these things PSPs, just call them Those Things Sony Made That Do Everything You Need Portable, or TTSMTDEYNPs. :)

i cant wait to see this tutorial, i wonder if i could take my 5g ipod an rip it apart to stick the hard rive into my psp internally? i mean, i can pretty well fit half of my ipod in there as is, so why not? hhhmmmm….

Comment by Thyme Cypher

Probably wouldn’t be compatible. The iPod tutorial probably means sticking an entire iPod Nano in your UMD drive X]

Very slick! I wonder how he got usbhost to run on the harddrive?!?

As for those slamming irshell, you just dont know how to use it. Access to usbhost and nethost is the most useful thing (since this mod) for mass storage at home or playing games on the road. (100mb box helps with nethost)
And yes, it will play 3.xx games/homebrew with all no-umd modes (m33 and sony’s np included) thanks to dax.

Comment by Thyme Cypher
2008-01-04 01:42:41

He didn’t get usbhost to run on the hard drive. That ESPECIALLY wouldn’t make sense, since usbhost would require the USB device to have it’s own system (Memory, processor, etc.)

He actually replaced the UMD drive with a hard drive, I’m sure. (Hence greg’s opening sentence, “My only question was, do you still have access to the UMD drive? That was quickly answered and sadly you don’t. “)

Comment by Grump
2008-01-04 01:48:54

I realize it would take additional hardware to run usbhost from the harddrive. But even if he replaced the UMD drive with a harddrive, it still doesn’t explain how hes running usbhost. He browsed to usbhost0:/, not disc0:/

not to mention… when you drop a PSP… usually the worst that happens (aside from a broken screen <_<, or totallya fucked PSP), is the memory stick and or UMD plop out….
but with a HDD in side… a small drop could fuck it…

Comment by Thyme Cypher
2008-01-04 10:30:42

Hard drives in the iPods often have a system that shut themselves off temporarily whenever they jolt. I don’t know if Sony made that technology for hard drives, but they did make it for optical disc drives, used mostly for laptops to prevent bad burns when jolted. And yes, it literally powers off the device until it’s stabilized.

Try powering up an iPod and tapping it, you should feel the click and hear it restarting the boot sequence. I actually have a few OLD hard drives that will do this too (Back when I modded my PC so much, I never had the time to install a side panel, because it was so inconvenient, so they got knocked quite often).

Sounds by the forum post like he’s got a harddrive in there, dunno whether it’s a 1.8 from an ipod or not, but that seems the most likely. If i can fit the old 60gig 2.5″ notebook drive I’ve got sitting in my room in there, I might just explode. I’m happy this has finally been done, probably some insane method of having a drive host itself though….

Comment by Thyme Cypher
2008-01-04 10:36:07

Like I said before vijay, there’s no way that there is software running on that hard drive. It would require user intervention to get it into USB mode.
The hard drive obviously didn’t have a linux structure. There was no /mnt, /dev, /usr, /etc, and so on. It’s still possible that there is a device with it’s own firmware, like the iPod, which automatically enters USB mode on connection. Still, that leaves problems with having to charge the iPod AND PSP for both to remain working, and if it’s wired directly through the PSP, the iPod would literally rip the power out of the PSP in minutes.

Comment by ...
2008-01-05 02:29:44

Cause Unix/Linux is open source, can you not change the directories to whatever you want? I know you don’t have to mount things in the /mnt folder. It’s just recommended.

Comment by Thyme Cypher
2008-01-05 02:49:57

But changing the structure is VERY tedious. Plus, /dev is required, because it holds links to hardware. You obviously never tried making a linux distro :)

If even the “unique” Mac didn’t change the structure, I doubt a distro alive does.

Just buy a 4 gb Pro Duo memory stick… -_-

I don’t understand how obsessed some people can get with ‘free’ space. I have a 40 gb hdd on my PC and a 4 gb stick on my PSP and I’m more than satisfied. Though, I burn on DVDs most of what I download… The rest is just not worth it. You download, you delete. It’s not yours to begin with ! It’s called PIRACY, hello ??

I don’t get it how some people can fill an 80 gb hdd (twice as mine) in just a few days. :| Dude… You don’t own that shit !

What?

I’ve got a 300gb external and a 160gb internal and I’m getting full. EyeTV records my TV shows and I export them for iTunes for my iPod. 1 hour=1gb. My photo library is 10gb (digital SLR). My Steam games take up a good 50gb. OSX and XP take up about 20gb in total. Final Cut and all them need lots of scratch space.
The rest of the space is taken up by my games.

My next purchase is a 1tb drive so I don’t have to constantly back up to DVD.
Don’t speak for everyone…

Deleting sucks… I still have files I copied over from my 9 year old laptop that was running win 98… But… Im a bit of a Digital Packrat… Even still…

As for PSP… my 4GB stick as done it s just just fine. Fitting all the Media Iv needed… to a point. I can simply switch out a few episodes of something… or a movie or two… when Im done watching them… But with something like a 60GB hard drive in the PSP, and access to assloads of media at any time, there is no need to constantly use and refill.

At any rate… if you check
http://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php?topic=13348.0
that out.. it has ASSLOADS of information on how USB and the PSP works (it is NOT a tutorial. Just basic information on how USB devices work in general, and what Cips are in the PSP)…
so, basically… it not as simple as hooking up a flash drive to the PSP.
When you attach your PSP to the Computer, and access the files on the computer… its that computers software thats letting it do that… not just the PSP. As far as I understand it at least. And since your flash drive can not actually have drives… for… its self, well that just doesn’t work. We shall see how he managed to attach a Hard drive (thats apparently a SSD…) to it, when he explains it.

You can always make a custom mount on the back. It’ll be bulkier, but hey, it’s worth it. Just make space for the UMD door to eject :)

or, with a hardware mod, mount the drive to the back of the UMD door. in a little slot. then it could be external and still not so clunky.
