PvP’s Internal USB Mass Storage
greg | January 3, 2008
Update: You may have noticed acidmods.com is currently inaccessible. My good friend CyberPyrot says it’s only temporary and they’ll be back online sooner rather than later.
My only question was, do you still have access to the UMD drive? That was quickly answered and sadly you don’t. So if you’re willing to sacrifice that, then you may add 30GB+ of storage — internally! Otherwise you can rig a similar setup externally with an iPod. Yup, an iPod. Tutorial coming soon…
Nice mod, PVP. And I should also give props to CyberPyrot for his feature in February’s issue of Official PlayStation Magazine.

COOL!

The song is actually
Protect Your Ears (Pulsedriver vs Rocco) Remix
Artist: Dj Dean
hey how do you get it to work
amazing!
Holy Crap That Is Ingenious Cant Wait For a Tutorial
Fascinating!
Wow this is my 1 comment ever in this site
and I got to say I cant wait to get at Tutorial !!!
this is soo Ingenious cool lol
Does this mean 30+gb of games on the go?
yes you can have 30Gb of games on the go. and as you can see in the video the game runs fine.
*cough* you must mean “backed-up games”
(LEGALLY OWNED backed-up games)
but then it force u to use ir shell, in my point of view, i dont like ir shell that much except for future versions..without ir shell, u cant access the usb mass storage…well it doesnt has to be ir shell but i dunno
Yea I’m not much a fan of ir Shell, just think it looks fugly and doesn’t work as smooth as the XMB.
Still it’s a nice looking mod.
The best part of it is that it is a gate way for future developement. Perhaps it will inspire people to develope a better version of IRShell
when you’re run 1.50 and love Dev Hook, with this hard-mod you’ll love Ir shell :)
You don’t have to use IRShell. In fact, a slight hex mod of CFW would let you change the directories that it looks in (MS0:\PSP\GAME150, ETC) to the flash. :)
In fact, when the tutorial comes out, I’ll try to write a tutorial for modding CFW to supporting it, if I can afford a drive.
Hell, at this rate, we might as well stop calling these things PSPs, just call them Those Things Sony Made That Do Everything You Need Portable, or TTSMTDEYNPs. :)
lol TTSMTDEYNP’s, hilarious
i cant wait to see this tutorial, i wonder if i could take my 5g ipod an rip it apart to stick the hard rive into my psp internally? i mean, i can pretty well fit half of my ipod in there as is, so why not? hhhmmmm….
Probably wouldn’t be compatible. The iPod tutorial probably means sticking an entire iPod Nano in your UMD drive X]
sweeet
Well its about time!!!!!!!You are the man, Ive been waitng for a mod like this since i got my psp!!!!!!Major props keep up the good work. :)
LET THERE BE CAKE!!!!!
The cake is a lie…. But this is cool… Can we get more than a 30GB though?
Easy. :)
LOL
and it says there is no limit to how much you can put in there
so im gonna go for as big as possible
Awesome! I won’t how much it’ll cost & what the access speeds will be like.
Cool this will save me a trip to get another 4gb mem. stick
a
WOW if this is fake ill hunt u down… lol j/k Nice work guys. u finally did a modd that has balls and didnt just make it pretty.:P get that shite in production …3 sold here.
iRShell is the best homebrew ever made! I have no problem useing it to get 30 gigs of extra storage.
How ironic. I had this idea last night and was actually going to look into it this weekend. I would like to see it/experiment with wiring internally though. That wire out the top has broken usb port written all over it.
Whoa many have tried and failed, but finally someone did it. Man the guys flaming at this in the forums sure are gonna be surprised. Just like when they flamed the DS emulator idea.
haha, ds emulator
I think a switch will do to get rid of that ugly black cable adding a small switch to switch off from the usb port and the hard drive power cable :D
Cool stuff! Can this be done with any External Device?? I have an apacer Share Steno with s 100 gig in it?? will that work?
You’re all a bunch of annoying fucking noooblets that can’t be more than thirteen. I’m betting the majority of you guys don’t mod you psp, and are being retarded. For the ones that do, like myself… kudos to you.
I always said I would never buy an IPod… might just rethink the statment with a mod like this…super radical dude…alright, enough of my teen-age years… Wonderful useful mod.
Very slick! I wonder how he got usbhost to run on the harddrive?!?
As for those slamming irshell, you just dont know how to use it. Access to usbhost and nethost is the most useful thing (since this mod) for mass storage at home or playing games on the road. (100mb box helps with nethost)
And yes, it will play 3.xx games/homebrew with all no-umd modes (m33 and sony’s np included) thanks to dax.
He didn’t get usbhost to run on the hard drive. That ESPECIALLY wouldn’t make sense, since usbhost would require the USB device to have it’s own system (Memory, processor, etc.)
He actually replaced the UMD drive with a hard drive, I’m sure. (Hence greg’s opening sentence, “My only question was, do you still have access to the UMD drive? That was quickly answered and sadly you don’t. “)
I realize it would take additional hardware to run usbhost from the harddrive. But even if he replaced the UMD drive with a harddrive, it still doesn’t explain how hes running usbhost. He browsed to usbhost0:/, not disc0:/
Probably modified irShells mount points. Who knows, it really doesn’t fit all that well together.
It’s probably both a hardware AND software mod.
Does this involve Hardmodding or just installing a software?
Yes, installing software will give you 30gigs of space…………………………….. and that cable coming out? PSPs come like that now.
wow lol, shadow u r a noob
Wow, i hav two 30GB iPods that r broken but the hard drives work fine. yay.
I wanna know how he’s managed to power a hard drive (if by psp battery it won’t last long)and whether it’ll handle very well with the extra moving parts inside.
not to mention… when you drop a PSP… usually the worst that happens (aside from a broken screen <_<, or totallya fucked PSP), is the memory stick and or UMD plop out….
but with a HDD in side… a small drop could fuck it…
Hard drives in the iPods often have a system that shut themselves off temporarily whenever they jolt. I don’t know if Sony made that technology for hard drives, but they did make it for optical disc drives, used mostly for laptops to prevent bad burns when jolted. And yes, it literally powers off the device until it’s stabilized.
Try powering up an iPod and tapping it, you should feel the click and hear it restarting the boot sequence. I actually have a few OLD hard drives that will do this too (Back when I modded my PC so much, I never had the time to install a side panel, because it was so inconvenient, so they got knocked quite often).
Sounds by the forum post like he’s got a harddrive in there, dunno whether it’s a 1.8 from an ipod or not, but that seems the most likely. If i can fit the old 60gig 2.5″ notebook drive I’ve got sitting in my room in there, I might just explode. I’m happy this has finally been done, probably some insane method of having a drive host itself though….
WOW!!! OMG!!! I been wanting to find a way to get a PSP to have a internal HD. Sadly Sony didn’t think of that for the SLIM. But honestly, OMG!!! This makes 2008 one hell of a year for the Homebrew Community, us in general. I can’t thank you enough, really so much thanks.
HA HA to SONY!!! ALL HAIL TO YOU GUYS!!! LOL. I am so waiting for the tutorial, whenever that comes, hopefully soon. But at least now, WE all know it is possible finally.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! U GUYS RULE!!!
my guess is he ported usbhost to ipod linux and using it as a harddrive :)
Linux rocks :)
lol wtf? random
Like I said before vijay, there’s no way that there is software running on that hard drive. It would require user intervention to get it into USB mode.
The hard drive obviously didn’t have a linux structure. There was no /mnt, /dev, /usr, /etc, and so on. It’s still possible that there is a device with it’s own firmware, like the iPod, which automatically enters USB mode on connection. Still, that leaves problems with having to charge the iPod AND PSP for both to remain working, and if it’s wired directly through the PSP, the iPod would literally rip the power out of the PSP in minutes.
Cause Unix/Linux is open source, can you not change the directories to whatever you want? I know you don’t have to mount things in the /mnt folder. It’s just recommended.
But changing the structure is VERY tedious. Plus, /dev is required, because it holds links to hardware. You obviously never tried making a linux distro :)
If even the “unique” Mac didn’t change the structure, I doubt a distro alive does.
you f/u/c/k/i/n/ moron the software thats being used is IRSHELL you dumbf/u/c/k/
i agree,
Linux makes me a not so sad panda.
this is a nice mod, but I could never give up my UMD access lmao.
Does anyone know how I can get my usb hdd plugged into my PSP without having IR Shell?
I just wanna plug the cable into the top like he has.
I have 3.52m33-4 and I wouldn’t really know anything about usbhost etc. help is wanted =)
In a way this would be very possible without something on the hard drives side just think how a pc work or even how it access the memory stick now. If he only could make it access the hdd like a memory stick. When there’ll be a tut I’ll put my 500 gb drive into this an try :)
only problem is that how long will the battery last????
we want the tut.
i’ve tried with a USB memory stick but when i press the USB host button on irshell it says “can’t connect” and i realise that i need some drivers for the mem stick but i don’t know how to put it inside. help…and ideea?
Just buy a 4 gb Pro Duo memory stick… -_-
I don’t understand how obsessed some people can get with ‘free’ space. I have a 40 gb hdd on my PC and a 4 gb stick on my PSP and I’m more than satisfied. Though, I burn on DVDs most of what I download… The rest is just not worth it. You download, you delete. It’s not yours to begin with ! It’s called PIRACY, hello ??
I don’t get it how some people can fill an 80 gb hdd (twice as mine) in just a few days. :| Dude… You don’t own that shit !
What?
I’ve got a 300gb external and a 160gb internal and I’m getting full. EyeTV records my TV shows and I export them for iTunes for my iPod. 1 hour=1gb. My photo library is 10gb (digital SLR). My Steam games take up a good 50gb. OSX and XP take up about 20gb in total. Final Cut and all them need lots of scratch space.
The rest of the space is taken up by my games.
My next purchase is a 1tb drive so I don’t have to constantly back up to DVD.
Don’t speak for everyone…
I Agree!
1TB Drive.. *drool*
I have 1998 Pentium 1 with 4 GB HDD and 128MB RAM and 4MB S3 Video card. I’m proud to anounce that to all of you.
w00t! Pentium 1 ftw
u dnt happen to be running win 95 do ya?
well, i beat you all. I have a legacy machine. lol. jkjk. i wish i did though.
<_<… I have 2x 360GB hard drives…… I fill them up constantly… granted Iv never had BOTH of them full at once… but still…
Deleting sucks… I still have files I copied over from my 9 year old laptop that was running win 98… But… Im a bit of a Digital Packrat… Even still…
As for PSP… my 4GB stick as done it s just just fine. Fitting all the Media Iv needed… to a point. I can simply switch out a few episodes of something… or a movie or two… when Im done watching them… But with something like a 60GB hard drive in the PSP, and access to assloads of media at any time, there is no need to constantly use and refill.
hm….i have a 500gb external hd…a 60gb internal hd….and for my psp a 4gb mem stick ..but…i want more…i’m obbsest…so…do you know any answer at my question?
At any rate… if you check
http://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php?topic=13348.0
that out.. it has ASSLOADS of information on how USB and the PSP works (it is NOT a tutorial. Just basic information on how USB devices work in general, and what Cips are in the PSP)…
so, basically… it not as simple as hooking up a flash drive to the PSP.
When you attach your PSP to the Computer, and access the files on the computer… its that computers software thats letting it do that… not just the PSP. As far as I understand it at least. And since your flash drive can not actually have drives… for… its self, well that just doesn’t work. We shall see how he managed to attach a Hard drive (thats apparently a SSD…) to it, when he explains it.
Actually, a device Creative made actually has a separate memory area for drivers for itself. Strangest thing I ever fucking seen o.o
I remember we thought something like this up a haxors half a year ago and were too lazy to continue :) It’s great that this has been developed because I was sad about an idea going to waste when it’s really good…
And you’ve said NOTHING about this till now why???
WE NEED THE TUT.!!!
Talk about missing the forest for the trees.
I’d lose UMD support? Nevermind then. I’m a silly bean but I love putting the UMD in and playing from there. Probably why I won’t make a very good pirate…
no just this particular mod looses the UMD drive he wanted to make it in ternal so he did not have to carry 2 devices…. There is no reason you cant connect it externale and boot it when you need it.
I dont play enough games to need the UMD that much… most of the media is ether music or video, nether of which I have on UMD… Plus none of the many Homebrew apps give a crap if I have a UMD drive or not… ^_^ so something like this seams very useful.
Good for some, not for all I suppose.
You can always make a custom mount on the back. It’ll be bulkier, but hey, it’s worth it. Just make space for the UMD door to eject :)
or, with a hardware mod, mount the drive to the back of the UMD door. in a little slot. then it could be external and still not so clunky.
Tutorial coming out in 2 days time…
sweet.
awesome work cant wait for that
AWESOME nice work guys. loads of diff questions about this very interestin to see it work . also does it allow me to copy the harddrive of the psp to my p.c and then can i transfere it back again?? i have 3.71 m33 4 as i got a friend to do it for me will i lose that and upgrade it to ir shell/. thanks people :O)
Great mod =D who needs UMD’s when you can have 30gb+ of backed up games =D (legally yeah whatever <.<)
Damn, sounds awesome…
But i’m not quite sure I get it…
So I could have an external HD for my psp?
I could store all my backed up PS1 eboots on there??
Please clarify…
What would look cleaner would be a nice small “Y” connector USB cable too. There has to be some killer little cable available that can be nearly unseen. Maybe even smaller form factor than the standard stuff. There is so much bulk on those.
Amazing… This will be perfect for my PSP with corrupted idstorage (no UMD drive use anyway on that bugger).
Does this mean it has to be with an ipod?
well will this work if i use my broken ipod?
I got a broken 30 gig ipod video. It had a sad ipod face and my friend tried to take it apart, when he removed the case he accidentally pulled the power ribbon and connector off the motherboard. I tried to solder back with a 15watt iron, but it’s just so small in that corner i couldn’t get two of the contacts. I tried and eventually lifted the contact point (just one) off the board itself. So it’s dead. No fixes (that I’m aware of). And we have already taken the HDD out of it and were experimenting on our own a few months ago. We never figured out a way to connect the HDD to the PSP phatty. We tried going straight to where the memory card port goes, soldered it back on…We kept failing. I’m really glad to see someone has found the way to do this. I also have tried (months ago) putting usbhostfs on my external 80 gig HDD, and attaching to the usb and running ir shell and selecting usb, with no luck. I want to know that “little step” I never figured out! Thanks so much! Two days doesn’t sound like a long time, but if you have tried to accomplish this yourself and failed, it’s an eternity! Do you understand how cool this is?!
You should leave some space inbetween phrases. I’m sorry, I just can’t read the whole thing.
Fit this bad boy in there and make $ony your bitch.
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=409007
This uses a programmable usb host controller programmed with the usbhost drivers connected to a usb mass storage device.Neat stuff!
Will a Mini-USB (B) male to USB (A) Female cable work if connected to an external hardrive? is it that easy or is IR SHELL mandatory?
Love it can’t wait now I will have enough room for all my games. heheh.
Oh yea by the way Greg I know you are trying to make some extra cash but that pop up skip ad thing is annoying as hell. Just my 2 cents worth.
But still love the site.
how do you make your name a link? I’ve seen this many times before, but now I must ask…Please. (magic word?)
you need to place a URL, underneath the E-mail.
thanks
I’m glad to see USB mass storage as an option now. Definitely a worth while improvement…
-TKG
UMD’s are outdated anyways…
i was planning on something like this but my idea wasn’t through the usb port but through the memory slot. how? remember Datel’s 4GB crazily expensive harddrive and the X2 Battery that made the psp look like a coffee table when placed down? yeah well i wanted to take out that hard drive (or microdrive) and simply replace that with at least the Zune’s 80GB HD cause i think they are about the same size. this is good also, except that you cant have a drive that requires more than just usb power. so your best bet using usb small im talking 1.8″ probably the size of a umd door is the 100gb Apricorn Aegis Mini A-18, that thing is small but with huge capacity like it’s price tag: $250. but if you’re like me and you just have to keep your whole Final Fantasy PSX Collection in one playable device, GO FOR IT!
HHmmm,..without the use of the umd, i wouldnt be able to umm,…make any of those..uhh..back ups,,but…having access to an extra 30 gb to go on top of the 8gb stick i got, would be rather cool.
I guess thats what friends are for.
You dont need the UMD if you have the new CFW. It’s an option in the recovery menu.
i had an idea like this a LONG time ago… thank god someone was smart enough to get that ball rolling… cause i know shit about hacking psp’s…
This is so cool having 30 GB
This sounds awsome, but 1 thing concerns me. If u lose UMD support, how would you get ISO’s on there? wouldnt u need 2 PSP’s?
hello people cmon isnt it obvious, everybody download games, sh@! why the hell would you have umd support-isnt that the main feature behind dark alex custom firmware no umd in the drive to play games !?! i bet if he would of took out the support of isos the psp community would be pissed off so stop bashing backups b4 dark alex takes out the support for them!!
I wasnt bashing anything idiot, read my question next time
The thing is, some of us want to be legit in SOME of our piracy, by not pirating from companies we don’t hate. Those who make games tend to be nice people, so we don’t pirate from them. Some are complete assholes, still trying to sell their 1985 basement creations for $20, so we give them an upside down middle finger, indicating our use of torrents. (For those who didn’t get the querky reference, an upside down middle finger makes the shape of a T. Torrent.)
ANYWAY, I’ll definately announce my involvement in the homebrew community once I can get PSPDEV working in wxDev-C++.
I agree. If everybody pays for great games, gamedevelopers will understand that a great game sells and in the end more good games will be released. If everyone stops buying games, music, movies etc only shitty stuff will be released. By the way it’s always nice to have a collection of games, cd’s, LP’s and movies.
I would assume this is for phattys only. I shouldn’t have sold mine, I got a slim.
it works on slim
Yep. I did a little research…
It seems that he created a little hardware chipset that handles the hard drive. It’s not a direct wire, and it uses tech that most other USB drives don’t have. Sounds like it’s basically a little calculator that allows it to do the tasks necessary for the PSP to see it for use with usbhostfs.
But I said it before and I will say it again:
THERE WERE NO CLIENT SIDE DRIVERS USED!
This is only logical from an idiots point of view, and I hate to say that so crudely, but it’s true. Do realize that drivers aren’t necessary for EVERYTHING to work properly. Most CRT monitors on windows don’t use a driver:
http:\\loserslounge.org\NoDriver.JPG
But seeing as I’m able to see what I’m doing, it’s obviously working. Everyone who claims drivers are in use are just trying to sound tech savvy.
tony hoang arent u a vietnamese and this is the best thing ever made after my day had gone bad this is cool
i was wondering about the battery life since where putting hard drive in psp’s…hmmm..
i agree with some people like ur gonna play 50 games and watch 30 movies at once….play a game watch a movie then change that shit out!! with 30 gig you will just have a bunch of shit that u dont use!!!
But see… think of it… although you are going to be running a Hard Drive… and all the power requirements of that… your also not going to be running a UMD drive anymore… so you gain all the power that was put into that… the motor.. the laser… all that junk XD. Im not sure if the power requirements for a HDD are equal to those of the UMD drive… but still.
A hard drive is probably about the same as an optical drive. For a PC, they pretty much are, but then again, they are about the same size (If you strip the excess in optical drives). With a tiny hard drive, your talking VERY minute power requirements, because you have a tiny motor, and what not as opposed to the UMDs rather larger motor. I’d say 50% less power usage?
How does this work? is it the ipod or the PSP UMD Storage space that holds 30 GB? someone explain more about it
Well it’s obviously not UMD storage since you can’t burn/write UMDs with your PSP…
great mod ,iv been working on the same idea for a while now but cant get usb host working on ipod linux, also waiting on custom wiring from a guy on ebay for the usb sockets.
i recon stripping out the ipod HD with ipod linux on it acting as usb host ,wired to psp power supply through pcb, with cfw 3.51 or above ,recovery mode option usb mass storage usb (on) pointing to the ipod HD.
i would love to know how the guy done this exactly with tutorial but i bet he is keeping this mod to him self for a while ,i bet he is enjoyin the moment as many told him it simply wasnt possible.hope he releases a tut …
I read up near the top somewhere that in 2 days he will release a tutorial. It’s day 2. Yeah!
iPod Linux doesn’t have a USB stack :)
Cloudy
ipod linux doesnt have much of anything to be honest ,rarely can i even get new builds to install without crashing my pc or laptop ,but its a work in progress.
woohooo asian pride!!
Note: Red flags, the producer of this stated that he will do the step by step directions when he feels like it. don’t know what that means. but i don’t know i dont think this is real.
I read this as well, I hope this will Spark Other PPL to try this and Maybe even SHOW us how to do it!
defo the real deal ,and i dont know why there arent more people trying to do this mod ,ill keep at it and hopefully i get it working, if i do then it will be on psphacks before anywhere else.
Why not just buy a few 8 gb pro duos and store them in your umd drive instead?
Moneyyyyyy. U shave money!!
I think this is Stupid! Really! We all been waiting, and waiting, and still no tutorial. We were told 2 days. Granted its a video. I believe it works, and we all do. I say its the most anticipated Mod for PSP. And, we all want it.
However, if all fails, it would be a big disappointment, and yet the reputation that Acidmods.com has now, would fall really down….
So please if someone can see whats going on with PvP, and ask how much longer we have to wait….
Thanks
Hmm, this sounds pretty sweet. But does anyone know if you could connect and I-pod to your PSP externally, instead of having to slaughter your PSP?
This is amazing, I’m fascinated, really.
Now, for an upgraded version:
I’m no expert, but I bet that if you used the parts of a slim PSP on a fat case the spare room woud be enough to fit one i-pod nano hard drive, or maybe even a bigger one, and connect it directly to the board, where de MSDuo was suposed to connect, leving both the UMD drive and the USB plug completely free and fully operational. Again, I’m no expert, this is probably impossible, or at least realy hard. But is someone is crazy/corageous enough to try, go ahead and let us know how it goes.
i’ve always wondered if it was possible to use an external hard drive, but didn’t know if there’s a program to run it. what program are you using?
As far as I know there are already some external hard drives avaiable on the market working without the need for software, they even work on Sony’s Official Firmware. Google it and you will find several models avaliable.
whats the point you cannot tranfer files using this from your computer
you have a point thats probably the rason why there taking so bloody long to release the tutorial
i dont like messing with the hardware but to this would be worth it
wtf! awesome
but the music is gay
seams like this is bull then the tut was ment to come out about 3weeks ago
