A Poor Man’s Pandora Battery

Posted by greg

The following “poor man’s” hardware guide to creating a Pandora Battery is aimed towards the non-handy man type. With that said you may potentially render your battery completely useless or cause another unforeseen disaster. Proceed with caution: (Thanks to James L for the guide.)

Unfortunately, I didn’t have the essential tools, and the soldering iron didn’t seem to want to work (possibly because it had solder on it). So I found a small way around using the “essential tools”. All you need is something that’s small enough to fit under the pin, a cutting utensil, and optionally, tape. Non-conductive tape, so NO DUCT TAPE!

Just pry open the battery by pinching the edges (with your teeth or something to that effect).

Once inside, this is optional, but I recommend it. Cut one of the batteries terminals, preferably, the one with a solid connection cable. One is solid, one is a flexible metal. Cutting the flexible one is fine, but it cause the battery to short, a problem I’m currently facing, every once in awhile, causing restarts. I’m guessing it’s because of the flexible material moving around inside the battery when the PSP is moved. Make sure to bend the metal GENTLY so that they cannot touch while you proceed.

Then, using your pry tool, make sure to get it just under the right pin, as seen in the diagrams. Preferably, get something that can wedge diagonally in the pin, then twist it.

Tape the battery terminal back together if you cut it, once you’ve safely removed the pin.

Put the battery back together. Don’t worry, it won’t snap together, thus, more tape! Wrap tape, and yes, you CAN you duct tape here, around the battery to hold it together. Scotch tape is recommended, because it’s not bulky, so it doesn’t prevent the battery from going in smoothly.

And that’s all there is to it. I was going to attempt to make a switchable service battery (even though this is possible VIA software, but it would have been cool to have), but the pin broke COMPLETELY off. Oh well.

The mentioned diagrams can be viewed here.

you know you don’t have to break off the pin.
all you have to do is cut the path running from the pin to the black with like a sewing needle. then when you’re done downgrading, just take a no. 2 pencil and fill in the path, and voila good as new.

If you break the pin right at the chip, you’re screwed. The battery won’t even charge ! And you need it at 100% for it to go into service mode.

You, my firend, are a dumbass.

It’ll still charge, just not properly.
You have to boot it from the power cable first for it to charge, and it won’t hold a charge for long. You know it’s not charging if the light flickers in 1-second intervals between green and orange.

This is cool if you don’t have a custom version or the materials but the best way to do this is shop on ebay.

Why is anyone hardware modding the battery? Using Hellcats Pandora Maker you can turn original PSP and PSP Slim batteries into Pandora and back with a simple magic stick. Its stupid to risk opening up a battery.

there probably modding their battery this way because they did have a homebrew enabled psp, to make the battery, that’s why i did it lol. and i do believe it’s risky but i don’t think it’s stupid if you know what your doing.

Yeah, there’s 2 reasons. Reason 1 is the person doesn’t know anyone with a homebrew enabled PSP (as Ash pointed out). Reason 2 is you bought a PSP, and the battery is Pandora-proof…

or just buy the datel tool battery. you do know you dont need a cfw psp to make a magic ms. just the right program.

The reason I wrote this little guide, was basically for entertainment. I noticed how the original guide required “professional” (For the lack of a better word) tools. Since I’m not a professional as far as hardware, and none in the least when it comes to PSP software, I wanted to do it using household utensils for the sake of trial. I actually did try a soldering iron, but it turns out a soldering iron isn’t as EFFECTIVE when you have SOLDER on it XD!

Anyway, the reason for doing this, at least to me, is the sake of educational experience. Same reason people buy $20 FM Radio kits when it’s cheaper to buy a $1 Chinese made portable radio from your local dollar store.

Actually, using my method runs the battery down faster if you cut the terminals like I did. Just like if you keep touching a 9 volt battery to your tongue. But this is probably just the fault of that unusually flexible terminal. Imagine worn tin foil. My battery lasts about 20 minutes on a full charge now. Since I never use my PSP where there are no power outlets anymore, it doesn’t bother me. like I said, educational experience :P

I heard you can use a semi bricked modded psp to make the pandora battery with recovery

Personally, I think it’s waaay better to turn it into a Pandora battery from inside a PSP (a PSP running on custom firware). Why ? Less hassle. And you DON’T risk fucking up your battery, YOUR ONLY BATTERY in most cases, which is not a very smart thing to do. Duh.

If you DO plan on hardware modding the battery, I suggest you don’t use a screwdriver. At least, not A METAL screwdriver… because you risk shortcircuiting the cells. Even the guide states “Just pry open the battery by pinching the edges (with your teeth or something to that effect).”

If you don’t have the “sk!11z” just ask someone for a pre-made battery to lend it to you for 5 frikin minutes ’til you’re on custom firmware.

This is the point of cutting the terminal(s). All I had was a metal pry tool (It was actually a needle). Had to touch the pins countless times in the process.

I “made” a temporary pandoras badery one night when my psp bricked. all i did was crack my battery case, and hold a pair of needle nose pliers up to the battery, with on tip touching each of the 2 spots indicated here: http://www.psp-hacks.com/2007/10/22/one-wire-pandora-battery-no-software-required/ It took a few tries, but eventually the thing booted into service mode. Vola, a tempory paderas bttery that instantly goes back to normal in 5 minutes.
    Cheers and happy new year!

Fuck, I coulda just did that and made my switchable…

Oh well, maybe next time. Too poor at the moment :)

hardware modding a battery seems like a great way to make a small psp space heater with the fire it might cause.
just mod the battery the proper way.
PS. Macgyver doesnt use his pandora battery to unbrick psp’s, he uses it to diffuse bombs

Me and my Friend have done this, but we made a switch between pandora battery and normal battery via small switch outside the battery

    2008-01-30 15:15:29

[…] Sony has apparently blocked access to the batteries eeprom; meaning our [existing] software methods are rendered ineffective. The workaround: use a friend’s PSP or go the hardware route. […]

u could’ve soldered a wire to a switch and on both of the pandora spots,, instead of using the pin which will break,, its much better, worked for me xD
