Orbid: A New Homebrew Game

greg | December 27, 2007

I must say, homebrew comes a dime a dozen nowadays, and over the years developers sure have come along way… What’s on tonight’s roster is another addictive homebrew game from a coder we’ve grown to know and truly appreciate. He goes by the name of Slasher, and this represents his latest — Orbid!

Orbid Screenshot

Orbid is an unique game in which you’re a small orb struggling to survive. You must eat the smaller (orange) orbs in order to gain points and survive in this dangerous world. All the while, you’ll be avoiding larger orbs or else you’ll become their dinner!

Orbid features 4 distinct game modes:

  • Normal Mode: Level based, in which each level will become increasingly harder for you to survive.
  • Survival Mode: Survival of the fittest. Survive for as long as possible before you become the enemies dinner.
  • Time Mode: Beat the clock. Eat as many helpless orange orbs as possible. For each one you eat, your timer will +1; and for each set of orbs you eat, you’ll recieve a 15to20+ random amount of time.
  • Mine Mode: Avoid the mines! Your goal is to eat the helpless small orb each round while avoiding the various scattered mines throughout the map.

This gamw will suck if it runs on flash. Why don’t the homebrew guys make their own EBOOT games? Oh, and i’m the first to post. YAY!!!!!

I have heaps & heaps of homebrew running without a problem on 3.52 M33-4, but this just locks up on me when loading…I have to remove the battery. Have tried both the 1.50 & 3.52 kernel from recovery…no joy.

heh, I need to adjust some things with time mode. I noticed shortly after release that it’s just a tad too easy :P

but fun! Surprisingly fun actually… well… till it got to the point where it looked like I couldn’t lose… at that point, I had about 480 points… sat in the corner, and let them all come to me wile time ran out.. just sitting there I got 45 points XD.

You did a good job on this one.

you mean Flow? upcoming PS3 game my ass… thats been out in Flash for a LONG time… Damn fun though.

Although… there are some STRIKING similarities between this and flow… with the exception being Flow was much more………… round. XD

I just liked how in Flow… as you went on, you morphed… and like, evolved… into a huge ass thing that can own all ^_^

I have 3.52 M33-4 and the game ran all the way through to the 11th level, then it crashed. I just reloaded it, and started from level 12. So it crashed in the saving process. But I played 12 on through (to 13 which is very hard), with no problems. The game is excellent! I’d buy this.

I out it in the 1.5 folder by the way. Works fine.

The sprites could use a little antialising… Or at least make them round ffs. :|

Also, in the first few levels, the range of which you ‘eat’ the orange orbs should be a little bigger… making it more newbie friendly. ;) More responsive to the controlls would be nice too.

Nice game.
