Project4 Open Beta 1 Released

greg | December 24, 2007

For all the skeptics and non-believers out there, PSP Hacks presents an Auraomega production — Project4!

We’ve witnessed proof-of-concept videos over the past couple weeks, and today — this fine Christmas eve — we have open beta numéro un.

If you’ve missed previous Project4 coverage, then we’ll have you know it’s a complete XMB replacement. Contrary to a “PSP shell” which runs on top of the XMB, Project4 installs and operates directly from flash memory; substituting the XMB entirely.

Everything is documented in README.pdf — known bugs, installing/uninstalling, theme specifications, etc… It’s strongly encouraged you read that over before jumping the gun.

Happy holidays!

Download: Project4 Open Beta 1

Project4 working/non-working functions:

Working:

  • ISO loading.
  • CSO loading.
  • ISOFs NoUMD mode.
  • Editable GUI.
  • 3.XX Kernel loading for EBOOT, PRX and ELF files.
  • 1.50 Kernel loading for EBOOT, PRX and ELF files.
  • PNG loader.
  • JPG loader.
  • HEX reader.
  • UMD loader.
  • Internal keyboard (soon to be replaced by Sony keyboard).
  • File Copying.
  • Change config and flash writing.
  • Theme flashing.

Non-working (faulty):

  • MP3 Player.
  • Text Reader.
  • File Deletion (Does not delete folders if there are files or folders inside).
  • NoUMD compatibility (M33 driver and NP9600).

Just a quick note to let people know that there is a bug in the original installer for the versioncheck, a new EBOOT.PBP has been uploaded to my forums and should be used if you have this error.

Yeah, there is an un-installation option in the installer, it removes and un-patches all traces of Project4.

It won’t install for me, even using the updated installer: http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/8/21/1369269/Project4_Main_Installer_Fixed.rar
Locks up at “Patching Sony firmware modules”.

Did you bother reading the readme? The problem you have is a common issue, and its solved by simply reading the first point in the installation section of the readme.

I did read the readme, but I didn’t see anything on this… must have missed something. My bad.

The problem you are having is to do with not freeing up enough space on flash0, check section 3.1

If you can still access the recovery you could run an updater through the recovery to get back to normal.

Whats your problem…this isnt 1985..lol, or rather, 2005 when a brick was the ultimate end… I brick my psp once or twice a week trying to do crazy things and new ideas. Pretty soon I might have something to contribute myself… dont worry about a brick, you can do it many times and still recover.

Just update to 3.52 M33-4, and then to 3.71 M33-4. I just say 3.52 cause i dont know if 3.71 works or not out of recovery, though in theory, it should. But in my opinion, K.I.S.S.

I’m not sure why you’ve bricked, the code doesn’t touch anything to do with recovery.prx or any of its linked files, I appologise for this, but if you can give me any info about what happened post on my forums please so I can avoid this happening to anyone else.

ok, when i started to install it, it said done on about 4 places, then it said it failed on about the 5th one i think.. it said that i might have a semi-bricked psp. i read in the readme that if it fails, you can just start again.. so i let if finish installing and it just kinof shut off. i had a full charge and the charger plugged in.. when i turned it on, it just stayed on for about 15 seconds and then shut off with a blank screen. recovery doesnt seem to work..

wait. im tryin to downgrade my psp slim. so if i do something real stupid and brick it on purpose, i can downgrade it using the recovery mode? like, restore it with an old, or custom firmware? cause i have 3.73 offical and cant get it downgraded. just a yes [and how to do it] or a no will do. thanks.

Nick, don’t brick your psp with official software. You will have a REAL brick on your hands. Recovery menu is in custom firmware only. READ READ and read some more before you do anything with your flash memory.

it involves desoldering a connecting pin from the actual battery on the chip. Can be dangerous. I don’t recommend it if you don’t have a steady hand/soldering skills.

its a universal pandora memory stick…it allows you to have a pandora’s battery and still run your psp off it…you just need to format your stick a certain way…look it up on this site, its out there….very worth it if you mess with your psp often

Comment by Auraomega

In 3.71 you need to un-install to return to the XMB, this was stated in the readme, the patch is too large to just “undo” like with previous firmwares patchs.

I’m assuming the emulator is saying it has no folder? If it is then you’d need to add folders in the same place as your EBOOT, like normal.

We should be more grateful to the hombrew devs.for their time and effort, instead of blamin’em for our mistakes.when we run one of their aplications we do it in our own freewill and accept all the risks that may follow. so if u say that someones aplication bricked ur psp, that only denotes ur ignorance and disrespect for that person. 0I_I0 say hello to my monkey.

The best idea is to just delete the dic folder in flash0 (forget its exact whereabouts) its pretty useless as is my understanding, and can be safely removed, it has about 3mbs worth of files and I’ve noticed no ill effects for removing it.

Comment by Thyme Cypher
2007-12-24 23:56:15

It may be a dictionary, similar to PS3’s auto complete feature, that never made it into PSP. Who knows, it’s not uncommon for files to get left around after all.

Ok, Auraomega.
I’m on 3.71M33-4, tried it, it worked, didn’t like it to much, but I do enjoy your epic break through. So i ran the installer again, to un-install it, and it said everything worked successfully from beginning to end, and it bricked, i could still access recovery, but Pandora did not want to work with me. So I ended up restoring a hard copy of what I had on my HDD and now I’m on 3.71M33-2…this needs some major improvement in the in un-install section….like a crap load

Comment by Auraomega
2007-12-25 18:09:00

Hehe, I’m rather supprised myself, I was expecting a lot more flames when people reported brickage.

I’m pretty sure most of the bricks were user error, I’ve heard no bricks on slim PSPs, and the only difference where Project4 is concerned is the free space in flash0. I guess most people didn’t read the readme and free up enough flash space and this is what caused the bricks.

uhh yea i hav 3 mb free space on my phat psp
i tried installin this (3 times in fact) and each time resulted in a semi brick
i followed the instructions every single time; i had the instructions up as i was installin
the error i received was on the last step and sed it failed in patching and that i have a semi brick
