Project4 Open Beta 1 Released
greg | December 24, 2007
For all the skeptics and non-believers out there, PSP Hacks presents an Auraomega production — Project4!
We’ve witnessed proof-of-concept videos over the past couple weeks, and today — this fine Christmas eve — we have open beta numéro un.
If you’ve missed previous Project4 coverage, then we’ll have you know it’s a complete XMB replacement. Contrary to a “PSP shell” which runs on top of the XMB, Project4 installs and operates directly from flash memory; substituting the XMB entirely.
Everything is documented in README.pdf — known bugs, installing/uninstalling, theme specifications, etc… It’s strongly encouraged you read that over before jumping the gun.
Happy holidays!

BRICKED!!!!
FAWK!!!!
Merry Xmas
ONE WORD: PANDORA
Im going to have to check this out…
Now to see if it bricks my psp.
amzing work cant wait till this becomes stable!!
Just a quick note to let people know that there is a bug in the original installer for the versioncheck, a new EBOOT.PBP has been uploaded to my forums and should be used if you have this error.
http://www.darkmessiah.byethost13.com/forums
Cool. The homebrew scene is not dead. :)
AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice Im going to read up on this right now. Thanx
nice work
nice! this is a great way to start off Christmas!
neat i might give this a shot, if it messes up ill use the pbattery to recover
I’ll wait for a better version, but can you actually uninstall it if you hate it?
Yeah, there is an un-installation option in the installer, it removes and un-patches all traces of Project4.
ok well look this looks nice wounder if i could make it work with the evox idea i had with my cfw 7.73 he that would be neat
intresting. can’t wait for a stabile release.
It won’t install for me, even using the updated installer: http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/8/21/1369269/Project4_Main_Installer_Fixed.rar
Locks up at “Patching Sony firmware modules”.
Running 3.71 M33-2
Did you bother reading the readme? The problem you have is a common issue, and its solved by simply reading the first point in the installation section of the readme.
I did read the readme, but I didn’t see anything on this… must have missed something. My bad.
The problem you are having is to do with not freeing up enough space on flash0, check section 3.1
I did, flashed it and everything from one of the Pandora menus. Oh well, I’ll try again later.
great… my first brick… marry xmas thanks for bricking my psp. how gay..
It’s called a pandora battery/
i know i know.. i’m just bent outa shape.. i told my self that i would never brick.. im just stupid. i just dont know how to make it or anything. havent realy messed around with that yet. i can still go into recovery menu, can i make pandora through there… or is there any way i can delete all the content from flash 0..??? its my fault for taking the chance.. good work by there way.
If you can still access the recovery you could run an updater through the recovery to get back to normal.
Whats your problem…this isnt 1985..lol, or rather, 2005 when a brick was the ultimate end… I brick my psp once or twice a week trying to do crazy things and new ideas. Pretty soon I might have something to contribute myself… dont worry about a brick, you can do it many times and still recover.
i know, im sorry for my attitude.. i was just looking forward for this..how am i suppost to make a pandora with a bricked psp?? is there a way to make pandora with out a psp??
Just update to 3.52 M33-4, and then to 3.71 M33-4. I just say 3.52 cause i dont know if 3.71 works or not out of recovery, though in theory, it should. But in my opinion, K.I.S.S.
keep it simple?
Keep It Simple, Stupid i believe xD
its about time lol!
awesome its released
hehe.. bricked my psp.. cant even access the recovery.. shitty deal.. i guess ill look at the pandora’s battery thing..
I’m not sure why you’ve bricked, the code doesn’t touch anything to do with recovery.prx or any of its linked files, I appologise for this, but if you can give me any info about what happened post on my forums please so I can avoid this happening to anyone else.
ok, when i started to install it, it said done on about 4 places, then it said it failed on about the 5th one i think.. it said that i might have a semi-bricked psp. i read in the readme that if it fails, you can just start again.. so i let if finish installing and it just kinof shut off. i had a full charge and the charger plugged in.. when i turned it on, it just stayed on for about 15 seconds and then shut off with a blank screen. recovery doesnt seem to work..
wait. im tryin to downgrade my psp slim. so if i do something real stupid and brick it on purpose, i can downgrade it using the recovery mode? like, restore it with an old, or custom firmware? cause i have 3.73 offical and cant get it downgraded. just a yes [and how to do it] or a no will do. thanks.
Nick, don’t brick your psp with official software. You will have a REAL brick on your hands. Recovery menu is in custom firmware only. READ READ and read some more before you do anything with your flash memory.
is this compatible w/ the slim. CF is 3.71 m33-2???
yay!!! i can’t get to recovery anymore so i cant toggle usb any more… yay!! now im realy screwed.. ive allways wanted a bricked psp with no recovery mode.. how the hell am i gona make a pandoras battery now. this suck.. i need to go to the sore and but a memory stick converter or osmething so i can plug in my lap top.. anyone know if thay make anything like that… im not off and buying a new psp for a pandoras baterry… any help would be cool… marry xmas everyone….

And you don’t have to buy a battery, the free service list I run has plenty of people who are willing to unbrick for free, check it out at http://www.darkmessiah.byethost13.com/freeservice.html
its all good…im just a little upset but its my fault.. i should of ben more cautious..i just need to get a memory duo converter and couple of new batterys…i knew one day it was gona happend..well all i did was put all that stuff in game folder… ran it and waited… at the end it told me that a file has failed to write, i did what the instuction said to do… anyway at this point it just hung for like 10 mins so i restated my psp manualy…so i restarted and it never turned on… i couldent get to recovery or anything.. i dont know if it has to do with the modle of my psp… its a ta86… but its ok.. marry xmas everyone.
who should i contact?? sorry for my attitude.. i just dont have the money to go buy new stuff… im usualy pretty carefull when i do stuff like this..
im gona try to make a jig kick battery from a bricked psp.. i found a tutorial on some page. i hope it can convert the battery into pandora with out having to access the xmb.. do you know of this method??
it involves desoldering a connecting pin from the actual battery on the chip. Can be dangerous. I don’t recommend it if you don’t have a steady hand/soldering skills.
i made one today.. i just need a usb memory card reader now.. then i can copy the files through my mem stick that way.. i should have
made one a long time ago.. thanks for your help merry xmas
Wow, why didn’t anyone make a Pandora battery just in case? And not having an extra battery isn’t an excuse now that U.P.M.S. is out.
whats u.p.m.s??? i dident think it was gona brick a psp from a straight install.. i know how to read instructions.. im realy cautious.. its just hung and faild to write the file it needed.. i can’t control what the software is doing.
its a universal pandora memory stick…it allows you to have a pandora’s battery and still run your psp off it…you just need to format your stick a certain way…look it up on this site, its out there….very worth it if you mess with your psp often
thanks for the tip.. marry xmas
I’ll leave it till it’s out of beta. No Pandora since I sold my fat PSP.
NOTE to everyone. If you think that this will brick your PSP, make a pandora battery FIRST.
Well said, if I suspected that this many people would have issues (yes unfortunatly there has been many people) then I would have suggested making a Pandora in the readme…
THE BEST it worked and i WAS on 3.71m33 looks so cool thanks Auraomega havent really tried it yet how do i switch to xmb though?
In 3.71 you need to un-install to return to the XMB, this was stated in the readme, the patch is too large to just “undo” like with previous firmwares patchs.
sorry bout that should read nice job though never had a problem oh and when i try and use my emulaters it says there is no folder what do i have to do to get them working sorry sorta a noob
I’m assuming the emulator is saying it has no folder? If it is then you’d need to add folders in the same place as your EBOOT, like normal.
ur a legend hope u do very well out of this good to see people tring new things my hat goes off to u
i’m having trouble installing it on the slim…can anyone help?
We should be more grateful to the hombrew devs.for their time and effort, instead of blamin’em for our mistakes.when we run one of their aplications we do it in our own freewill and accept all the risks that may follow. so if u say that someones aplication bricked ur psp, that only denotes ur ignorance and disrespect for that person. 0I_I0 say hello to my monkey.
happy holydays.
good words have u tried it ive had no problems with it people just hav a sad coz they cant do things like Auraomega can and oher people
so true. 0I_I0
Auraomega, it says to free up Flash0 space750KB, i cannot find a good program as Flash agent F4 doesnt work in m33 3.71-3. any suggestions? thanx cant wait to try
I used a program called 14435_Spaceforeverything1.6, it worked like a charm.
The best idea is to just delete the dic folder in flash0 (forget its exact whereabouts) its pretty useless as is my understanding, and can be safely removed, it has about 3mbs worth of files and I’ve noticed no ill effects for removing it.
It may be a dictionary, similar to PS3’s auto complete feature, that never made it into PSP. Who knows, it’s not uncommon for files to get left around after all.
thanx to BOTH of you HAPPY HOLIDAYS
um.. i start it on 3.73HX(dont ask why) and it says version check failed wtf?
haha nvm i should learn to read comments
wow half the people using this bricked. Id pandora and then try but I dont have an extra battery and stick.
I even ended installation early (My Pandora battery is a hardware-based service battery, and my methods turned it into a kick-start battery (Tap the PSP to turn it on) and didn’t have a problem booting into XMB. Really unlucky people.
i guess i just stay tuned then!
you gays are hopeless without me. i mean guys. whatever.
you can stand under my pandora. ora. ora. ora. o. o. o.
Thanks Auraomega. Followed the readme and got installed then uninstalled with no problem. I’ll reinstall once the other features are fully functional.
Thank you again… tried it out , but pandora’d back to 3.71m33-2 , couldnt get any game, or ISO/CSO working, excelent work thoe. i too will try again when all features are operational.
Happy Holidays
If you take a good long look at the readme you’ll notice that ISO/CSO loading IS supported, but ONLY under ISOFs mode.
ill try the final sometime, after i get a pandora’s battery goin.
Ok, Auraomega.
I’m on 3.71M33-4, tried it, it worked, didn’t like it to much, but I do enjoy your epic break through. So i ran the installer again, to un-install it, and it said everything worked successfully from beginning to end, and it bricked, i could still access recovery, but Pandora did not want to work with me. So I ended up restoring a hard copy of what I had on my HDD and now I’m on 3.71M33-2…this needs some major improvement in the in un-install section….like a crap load
you mustve did something wrong when making the pandora’s battery then. No matter what your running, it should work.
Not interested at all, I bricked using this already, thank goodness for Pandora
Oh well nice try lads
I agree with Squidman, needs some work, but like I said before, nice try and good luck to your future improvements if any
i like the lack of flaming on this…it might not have worked exactly as planned, but we got a buttload of comments and with a bare minimum of flame…lets hope it keeps up
Hehe, I’m rather supprised myself, I was expecting a lot more flames when people reported brickage.
I’m pretty sure most of the bricks were user error, I’ve heard no bricks on slim PSPs, and the only difference where Project4 is concerned is the free space in flash0. I guess most people didn’t read the readme and free up enough flash space and this is what caused the bricks.
uhh yea i hav 3 mb free space on my phat psp
i tried installin this (3 times in fact) and each time resulted in a semi brick
i followed the instructions every single time; i had the instructions up as i was installin
the error i received was on the last step and sed it failed in patching and that i have a semi brick
can u explain this?
haha damn better than i thought it would be very good app frsher i think it has excellent capabilities and i cant wait to see what this brings into the homebrew world
HAHAHAHHAHA
u cant do a thing without me hahahahahaha
nick work, i bricked my psp a few times with this i am using 3.52 m33 and i used the 3.52 installer and it bricked it each time but then i tryed the universal installer and it worked :)
U guys are really stupid for doing something like installing this or anything in flash 0 without pandora or a way to make a pandora
P.S – I learned the hard way DON’T MAKE THE SAME MASTAKE.
THANK GOD FOR PANDORA!
can i use pandora batt to recover a formatted PSP??
yeh you can…you just need the battery which must be made using a hacked psp if you got a friend with one…i’d suggest the universal pandora mem stick…it works wonders =)
im gonna wait till this doesnt get so much negitive feed-back
MUHAHAHAH u ppl seemed tp brick your PSP now create me and UNbrick the PSP!
wtf did you say?
L2Comprehend
cool i made the battery.. i took out pin 5.. so it lights up when i inset the battery in to my psp.. all i need now is a memory card reader and a new battery… i hope this works.. marry xmas…
Wow… I never had any probs with this ever infact when i test it i usually install and uninstall over 5 times a day… ofcourse im a tester so thats expected
Well im glad to see people are still working on projects like this. merry x mas and keep up the good work
is it true that this will have .wmv and .avi support?
why are all you noobs installing beta homebrew and expecting it to be perfect. for those of you who bricked HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
for those of you like me who actuallty got it installed but feels the xmb is better atm.
uhh are you gonna finish that sentence?? but yes obviously the xmb is better atm but this is the 1st release what do you expect
crap no offense i got a semi brick went back too 1.50 (recvory menu) updatet to 3.40 oe or smefin and triyed it again and then it sayed it eworked now i have a full brick i turned it on and it just shuts diwn after a while
Expectin a better version soon…
Περιμένω καλύτερη έκδοση σύντομα…
BRICKED oh well i guess ill just play assasins creed instead
MerryX-mas!
fools
i aint got pandora or other means ,i have psp and its in good shape ,i dont want the extra hassles over christmas ,i just want psp and fun ,so can you please fukin sort this shit out ,instead of not warning good peeps of bricking, idiot … and for what ? something that isnt even clearly shown in a vid man get a grip , please … to all the psp users dont use untill its at least properly tested …. dam
Properly tested? we tried it on 3 diff psp’s with 3 diff cfw’s and they all worked
i must say that all of you who dont have a pandora battery are really at a loss if you bricked your PSPs
i made mine as soon as i could
you all should have done the same
after you use pandora Despertar Cementerio V3 you will still have to use the one that takes you to 1.50 because my nand backups that i had and the 3.71 M33-2 that pandora Desper Cement V3 installs doesnt fix a problem with the ADHOC conecction, so you have to go all the way back to 1.50 or find that file that says in the readme that you have to erase KMsomething.prx
This worked fine on 3.52m33-1, But any time I tried it on 3.52m33-4 it bricked it.
is there a magicstick easy installer that adds all the boot updates.??
i made pandora and works perfect. but it downgraded me to 1.50. yay!!! thankss guys
worked fyn for me
noob question…can i install this on a 1.50 FW psp?
if i were you, i’d install a custom firmware onto it…this is a little unstable at the moment and if you are looking for something nice right out of the box, check out one of M##’s firmwares…if you still want to try this out, it should be able to run on 1.50 but alas, i have not tried myself…to be on the safe side, make yourself a pandora battery and memstick, upgrade to M33 custome firmware then give this a try…hell maybe by then it’ll be wicked stable :)
No, its completely 3XX
ive installed this 3 times and all times resulted in a semibrick
ive followed the instructions; im at 3.71 m33-4; ive been able to fix the brick by replacing all vsh files with backup; i hav 3 mb free space on flash0 and hav formatted flash1
plz help
have you used the new universial installer? its been updated
tried it twice and i was one for two first time i bricked in 3.71-m33-4 then tried it again in 3.71-m33-2 and it worked, had a problem when i went to games and went to the root of the mem stick in the file browser though (screen went blank and it displayed fffffffffff in green letters in the top left nothing else and when ever i hit O it flashed to the project 4 xmb for a quick sec and right back to the black screen) dunno if it was a bug or if i did something stupid just thought i would share
hex reader or sumthin you have to press O fast to get back to the menu
that was the name of my old band….
ahhh ok, on another note i have installed an uninstalled multiple times on m33 3.52 without prolem only thing is that when i go to switch it never works, am i doing something wrong? and i tested IRshell(working) UMD (working) and two emulators SNES9x working and nes 1.11 wasn’t working but could be just my emulator, dunno if it has been done yet or not but where do the folders go for emulators, music, etc. keeps saying no such folder even though i made one in numerous areas
The switching dousn’t work on most PSP’s atm only some for some unk0wn reason. all the folders go into the PSP folder… MUSIC, EBOOK, PHOTO ect.
I haven’t personally tested this yet, but, I just sat here and read all of the above comments.. Personally, will I try this? Yes, when I find some free time, I’m not worried about any bricking, or anything of that sort.
However, I will say, I am revolted by some of the comments, at least the ones without apology and/or self realization that they themselves were responsible, but I suppose everyone is like that at some point in their life with some things. However seriously guys, if you have installed anything to flash before, such as custom firmware, and you have actually read the README files sufficiently thorough you would have seen this line before ” AS WITH ANY HOMEBREW THAT WRITES TO FLASH, THEIR IS ALWAYS A CHANCE TO BRICK “.
Just because this person whom we, or at least I personally, have never heard of in the Homebrew scene before, has made this homebrew, a W.I.P. XMB replacement, which obviously writes to flash, everyone, including seasoned PSP users from 1.50 only Homebrew days, should expect to see a close ratio between successful installs and semi-brick/brick installs. It’s common sense.
So to anyone leaving a comment complaining that it wasn’t tested well enough, or complaining that they have an unrecoverable brick, it is your fault for not thinking things through. Besides, if you have custom firmware, you should at the least realize the risks involved with such things. If not, go over to the forums and do some reading before doing anything with your PSP, otherwise your comments have no value to anyone.
Finally, I will say this; ” Project4 Open Beta 1 ”
Their is a single word in the line above that should point out everything I stated above in itself, Beta.
I’m not trying to be rude to anyone, but seriously. All the flames on devs I have seen because someone has gotten a brick using their brew, it’s ridiculous. You, the end-user, are responsible. No one else makes the decision to try these things out except you (unless you have a delinquent younger/older brother/sister, in which case, you should be lashing at them and not the dev).
Honestly, I’m just sick of seeing people complaining about these things when it’s almost always the users fault. [/endrant]
I’ve said what I had to say, I’m out.
this works preety good; installed and uninstalled successfully. Great Job!
its about time lol!
awesome its released
