PSP Custom Firmware 3.80 M33 in Development

An interesting thread started by Mathieulh indicates custom firmware 3.80 M33 is in the works. Furthermore, the possibility of a 3rd generation PSP model could be under development too… Have a read:
While working on the future 3.80M33, we found a VERY interesting string in the IPL’s playload: “/kd/pspbtcnf_03g.bin”
For those who do not understand here is a bit of history:
since 2.71 and especially in 2.80, we could see a string refering to pspbtcnf_02g which suggested the support of a new hardware or at least of a new operative mode. Later with the slim release we found out that the slim’s codename was this infamous 02g (proably standing for second generation) and that it used the _02g modules as well as pspbtcnf_02g.bin. It means that they worked on slim firmware/kernel for months before the actual hardware was announced/released.
We believe it is the same with the 3rd generation hardware which they are now preparing for sure. Will it be yet another lighter (and pandora proof) psp or will it be the new psp phone? Time will tell

Hmmmm….Very interesting. I was thinking of ditching my phat and buying a slim, but I’m gonna wait now because there may be a third generation PSP.
Well, just a heads up. Even if there IS a new model, it won’t be out for quite some time. Having said that, the chance of us hacking it anytime soon after the release is “slim” (no pun intended)

Not possible. They won’t risk alienating the current users, the hardware will not change. Unless this is a PSP2, but if they’re running off Nintendo’s standards then we’re much too early for a completely new handheld.
I’m predicting a minor update to the 2G model. Maybe a brighter screen. Some benefit to get people buying a system with slightly different motherboard that cuts into homebrew even more.

I doubt it for quite awhile if even found the oppurtunity to do so now as the PSP 2000 or Slim you may call it just arrived, and the complaints alone right now would almost end them for there PSP, but even later only the young and non-informantant people will go ahead a buy and yet falling to Sony again when all all could possibly be done on the so called Phat PSP

Well, I have a slim and I don’t think it’s a waste at all. I love it so much I bought a phat just so I could have a CFW PSP and a “legit” one and I think they’re both great for different reasons.
If a third comes out, heck I’ll probably get it too and put the CFW on my slim (which is currently staying at official 3.71).

I agree, seeing as the Slim has so much flash space, there’s basically no downside to getting CFW. You’re not losing any features and I’m sure you’d like to be able to run homebrew and your own ripped PSX games on it :)

That’s not likely… Have you seen what HX is? It’s just hex edited M33 with little or no upside. The latest one doesn’t work with homebrew and there’s no recovery menu. No flaming or offence intended but HX firmware will not be out before M33. When there’s a slight change in code (3.81, 3.81 etc) then expect a hex edited M33 to be out by HX.

It could possibly just be a hardware revision to block pandora. Remember how there was two PSP phats? The TA-086 and the TA-082 motherboards.

I wouldnt exactly laugh at this idea… some PSP games already meet their limit of the 1.8 gigs of space the provided. What is the UMD…basicly a mini DVD. For the Next PlaySation Portible version 2 (not a remake), it makes sense for it to have a mini-Blu-Ray drive…what kind of space could we expect… i’d say 9-15 gigs easily. The Almighty X-Box 360 would even have less… what a joke that system is. Long Live Sony, Long Live PS3 and PSP 2! In the meantime, the PSP 1 is the greatest handheld ever created, even beats XBOX 1 and the Cube, nintendo handhelds could never claim anything close to beating last gen consoles. Bravo Sony!

i think the best way to look if u have a slim or phat is to throw the psp up in the air and let it fall on the floor…if it breaks a part,then is a phat(heavier) and if it doesnt break,then is a slim(slim and lighter)

The PS3 will die if they let it, I doubt they will since they keep using the PSP more and more often to interact with the PS3. Before hand you could only remote connect to the PS3 and play some compatible games via remote, and stream some music and video, now you can also play PS1 games the same way.
How do you expect Sony to stick around if they only have a PSP system and stay on the older PS2 Hardware? I mean the PS2 is great and all but comparing it to a PS3 in terms of capabilities, and gaming video quality is a real no contest. You can’t innovate and move forward if you stay on older hardware and software, you have to move up and upgrade it or it’ll become obsolete.
If you look at the gamestop website you’ll notice that’s a bunch of new games coming out for the PS3 during the first few months of the year, so it looks like the game companies are finally moving over to the PS3 and leaving the PS2 behind. There’s still stuff coming out for the PS2 but the better stuff of course is going for the PS3.
The PS3 won’t die. people are buying the PS3 because of blu-ray features. The PS3 is about $400 cheaper than a blu-ray player. So what would you do? Buy a PS3 that you can play music, play games, look at pictures, surf the internet, watch videos, and play blu-ray discs for $500, or buy just an ordinary blu-ray player for $1000?
piracy is a serious issue ,i know we all know this but if we all want good games and plenty of variety and imagination there must be some kind of respect for the developer.i give the thumbs up to cfw but would like to see more software bought as well as testplay of isos.

This is awsome news to begin with. The thing that makes it so awesome is that these people are still into the hacking scene. I really want to give my appreciation to these hard-working people. I believe a donation is in favor. Jacob, if you want a firmware that will be to your own liking, make your own, if you don’t know the process of these things, I would highly suggest to stay quiet! 3rd generation I believe I will buy without a care (I got money :p) All support goes to Sony for pushing technology with many risks and DAX, HX, and M33 teams for their work and dedication to providing great assistance in delivering a lot more entertainment in our own pockets with no additional charge. One thing I am concerned though. I hope this will fix the “Internal error” that occurs everytime my psp scans for a wireless signal in “Network Settings” That is all, Hillbilly logging out!…..

Hey guys, i have 3.71 m33-3 (for somereason i can’t get m33-4 to work). Before someone tried to flash a theme on my psp. It didn’t go so well, i know ppl are gonna think i’m an idiot but this guy did this all the time nothing ever went wrong. When the theme went on it semi bricked it, and it took me ages to put on the original files to flash0 because i kept getting cyclic redundency check errors and the drive is full errors ( i dunno what crc is can someone explain?) and i wanted to know when this 3.80 m33 is released, will upgrading have a chance of bricking my psp. oh i should also add that first time i got my psp original files back on i started up the psp and instead of the sony splash screen i got a red one saying hello world lets take a look at it then it froze, i fixed it now and it seems to work fine except i get an internal error has occured whenever i scan for a wireless network. i just want to know will upgrading to m33 3.80 have a chance of bricking?
Sorry for posting before i said this, hillbilly had this internal erros too, no problems now it only happens if no wireless signals are in the area (i had my router off XD) silly me.

Penguin, thanx for your reply and all but, thats also what I thought too. But even though I had the psp find like 5 different signals, to get closer to one of these signals I had to scan again. Kept giving me Internal errors 24/7. It sucked major ass. I’m really hoping 3.80 fixes this to just tell me “No connections detected” or some bad news like that. Also Penguin, to get the full restoration of your psp, just downgrade to 1.50 and upgrade again (not if you’re on a slim, lol) I have the full flash backup for PSP Slim and Phat if you need ‘em. Yeh hillbilly, i have psp phat started as 1.52, then 2.00 then 1.50 then 35.1 m33 and so on. I think it’s fully restored, it’s just yesterday i dropped it and got 7 dead pixels lol. I have about 7 backups so ill be fine :) thanks anyway. Ill look into putting it back to 1.50 then install cfw again, is it hard?

The one thing I am really disapointed in is the price drop…most people would say that it is a great thing, but today the PS3 still is worth 600.00 in my oppinion, not just because I purchased it at launch, but because market conditions, its features and sheer power. The Wii is a cheaper system, but it was launched at the same time, and they havent had any price cuts. People, its only ONE year old, Sony shouldnt have had to cut the price 200 dollars. The PS3 will still stand supreme in 3 years when the WII and X-360 go the way of the dodo…its powerful enough to stand against the next gens from both companies. Bring it on Nintendo and Microsoft…

The 3.71 M33 is a great CFW but it have some bugs ! Almost of the time the psp freeze and shut down! And now im thinkin that the upcomming CFW will be more Buggy and will make Fully bricks to the psp.
And think if the next and last cfw will be 3.80 M33 and there will be no more CFW, and we users will not be able to play new games [iso's]

idk if this is a firmware problem but when sometimes i hit my PSP it comes off. and also when i go to internet it skips the cintro and i will have to keep fixing it.

Somehow I think Sony has something up their sleves…my oppinion is they have 2 firmware packages they are working on… the 3.8x/3.9x version and the whole brand new encrypted 4.00 they have probley been working on since the day Pandora worked for the slim. I fully expect 3.80 to be hacked in less then a week with such brilliant people as DAX working on it, but even he will be thrown thru a loop when the whole new 4.00 comes. A version 3 psp…probley more internal hardware then external changes. To be honest, the SLIM is better the the original, and is has very few design flaws, the weight ratio is perfect.

Well in my opinon, pspbtcnf means PSP British Telecom Configuration, one of the features sony promised for the new year for the european community, during the german games conference back to september.
Sorry to say but I’m gonna have to go with Edson on this one. There are so many advances for the technology that the PSP holds. Phat could probably not meet the standards of next years “Entertainment Pack” that comes out in January and later on the summer. One of wich is chatting or having somewhat of a video phone conversation using the PSP Camera. I believe the program is called “GO Messenger”. If anything Sony does not need a new PSP. Slim has 66MB of Internal Flash Memory, you can practically program anything into it. Penguin, its not hard to downgrade…just don’t downgrade from CTF to CTF (it will brick your psp completely). I have a program that will launch straight from the recovery menu. if you need it, tell meh :) and I’ll send it to you somehow, lol. That is all, Hillbilly logging out….

Im Old school. Back in the days of FW2.60, PSP2 was supposed to have Mega flash memory and no UMD. Upgrading an original “Fat Bottom Girl” to 2.0 was great fun! But to my dismay, running some Homebrew software, my girl just wasnot the same. With the use of Pandora and Key Cleaner brought her home. Restoring to Factory Defaults helps alot. yeah, thats just a link into the program that starts up the recovery. What it needs, is the program itself. You only need this if you “Semi-Brick the PSP” meaning, turn on= black screen=green light goes out= turn on with R pressed=recovery menu=semi-brick. Thats what it is hehe:). Anyways, yeah the program itself has to be installed in order to be runned. Just an eboot here and some firmwares here and here, launch, and done. Okay, I’m new and just bought my PSP, and made the mistake of updating officially. So now I’m waiting for M33 for 3.8. I have a question though, is it safe to do. Does custom firmware present problems, and if you use custom firmware, can you upgrade to a sony official firmware future release if you decide you don’t like the custom. Also what all does the custom firmware do that sonys doesn’t
new custom firmware is not going to help you. other custom firmware you need either a 1.50 PSP or a other M33 or OE Firmware.
A custom firmware gives you all the homebrew of 1.50 PSP which gives the 1.50 Kernel and the 3.XX Kernel. It also alows you to flash XMB Themes with big icons or HEX Edit stuff. It allows you to play UMD Backup AKA ISOs and CSOs. it also allows you to play roms like if you were to have a MOD Chip installed. and lots of other features that sony doesn’t have which i don’t feel like explaining.
if you have a higher firmware so downgrade to 1.50 and get a CFW. you will need pandora battery to downgrade firmware 3.52-3.80 firmwares. so the only way to make that is a homebrew PSP which you don’t have so your just stuck with official borring firmware for the rest of your LIFE!
Edit: To downgrade 3.51-3.80 is to only use a pandora battery. (Homebrew PSP can only make)
1.50-3.50 use HEN Downgraders.
a new psp is under development. my niece has a friend whose dad works in Sony. there will be a Psp 2, so i feel sorry for myself for buying the psp slim when there will be a new Psp maybe next year or so. i haven’t confirmed the release date, but i’m sure there will be a new one. Sony sucks!

yeah 3.80 m33 they should make this version to be able to upgrade straight from a regular version because following all those steps that you have to have 3.71 m33 to get 3. something it sux so yeah they should :P and by the way when is it comming out?????i hope soon

As i had tried on the official 3.80, i found that the both phat and slim can be downgraded by pandora battery.
WOw!!if i see a psp phone with touch screen i will b happy!(and run to bangkok and buy it like i did for my slim) :P and i bet that all these nice programmers will do something for our Homebrew appz! for me psp is the best portable device fat or slim,thnx Dax,Booster ,Hex etc…

you can downgrade the 3.80 using universal_PSP_unbricker_V3 and pandora battery. The method will upgrade to 3.71m33-2.

the new psp 3rd generation will be out next year i’ve read in the STUFF magazine singapore edition, they called it SONY ERICSSON PSPHONE, is a slider type phone. if you slide to the left is d-pad with analog, if you slide to the right is phone key pad.
