Multi-disc Popsloader Coming Soon

greg | December 10, 2007

Ah, good morning! Roughly six hours ago an email from a fellow by the name of Fadil notified us concerning Dark_AleX’s most recent developments…

PSP homebrew developer Mathieulh tipped us off today to let us know that a new Popsloader binary with full support for building multi-disc PSone EBOOT is due for release soon.

Essentially, this means that when converting multi-disc PSone games for use with custom firmware on the PSP, users will be able to store and compress all the data into one EBOOT file, rather than building a separate EBOOT file for each disc.

Awesome! Now that’s something to look forward to.

“Thanks for the tip.”

What if about the game is on 4 discs like final fantasy?

It will be very large eboot…

I mean it doesnt fit on mem cards…

ummmmmm…………yeah, lets see here, max. capacity of around 700mb

700×4=2800 which translates to roughly 2.8gb
700×6=4200 which translates to 4.2gb

the largest aviable memory stick is 8gb, 4gb memory sticks are more common and are getting ever cheaper as well. there should be no problem fitting them on a 4gb memory stick, you would have 1.2gb left over, and thats not counting compression either.

2007-12-10 16:14:44

4 CDs x 700 MB = 2800 MB (2.73 GB) but it’s actually smaller because the CDs aren’t exactly 700 MB ! Plus compression…

Imo, a 4 GB ms should be enough for FF7, a movie and some music. ;) Maybe we’ll be able to “join” just the CD1 + CD2. (~1 GB if you rip the intro movie and shit). We shall see.

Can’t wait to play some Abe’s Exoddus, btw. :D

While it would be more convenient, it’s not that necessary for those types of games. Final Fantasy has always given you the option to save before loading a new disc. Games like Xenogears and Chrono Cross, which only have two discs, really benefit from this because you are forced to change discs mid-game.

Either way, this is fantastic news!

On a scale of 1 to 10 ?

Around 9.5… But definitely awsome !

The only thing cooler than this would be that 1.5 kernel thinghie for the Slim. Or that WTF Project where you can run homebrew on official firmware (which I think it’s total BS btw.).

I hope this new popsloader will allow the ability to play games that are multi-track discs. It would be nice to hear some in game music while playing Thrill Kill and many other multi-track disc games. Anyone know?

Comment by DSpider
2007-12-10 16:30:25

Rayman’s got CDA music and it played just dandy on 3.71 m33-2… Donno about 3.71 m33-3 (I recently updated). Maybe you’re not converting them the right way. When you go torrent-fishing for PSX ROMs, get them in CUE/BIN format or CCD/IMG.

And always open the .cue file with Notepad to check the status of the multitrack. ;) It there’s only one track, you can safely convert it into an ISO. It doesn’t matter, because there’s just one main track.

People that rip multi track games in ISO format are fucking morons because they loose the in-game music. USE CUE/BIN INSTEAD !

Comment by SkvM
2007-12-10 20:51:15

So since some of the eboots that I have are “rip multi track games in ISO format” does that mean that even with multi-track functionality, I still won’t hear BG music? Damn. Any chance of you, or anyone, having a Thrill Kill eboot in the correct format for in-game music?

Comment by DSpider
2007-12-11 05:20:16

ISO files simply cannot store CDA music. Why ? Because the format is somewhat outdated. Nero came up with the .nrg format for better results. If you find a .nrg PSX image, convert it into bin/cue, then open the .cue file with Notepad… ;) Look at it.

Browse the torrent sites for the full game and convert it yourself into an EBOOT.

I had the same problem with multi-track games like Tekken and Twisted Metal 2. Make sure the game has a .cue file. Open it up and see how many tracks there are. Most of the time you can just Google “working .cues”; “whatever game” Also in the .cue (use wordpad to open), make sure this is at the top, FILE “Game location.(img, bin, iso, etc)” BINARY For instance in your case it would be FILE “Thrill Kill.(img, bin, iso, etc)” BINARY Make sure you know what type of file it is too. Then use PsGUIni300beta, open the .cue file and convert it to eboot. It will create two files, an EBOOT and another file that has ISO in the name. Cut and paste it onto your memory stick and Bam! you have sound.

Freakin awsome! Btw ff7 takes 1.46gb when I finish and ff8 takes about 2.1gb. So a 4 gb mem stick should fit both. (I have an 8gig so it doesn’t really matter)

I really don’t see this working, even though the eboots could be combined when you get to a swap disc screen, how are they going to simulate the second disc being put in and tell the console where to load from.

with CWcheat and a save file converter, all you have to do for the games that dont let you save before changing discs is….. Save file, convert to ePSXe format, play till after disc swap, save again, then load onto mem card and import ePSXe save with CWCheat.

and i dont think you can do DAX or CSO compression on pops games

Comment by DSpider
2007-12-11 05:32:11

The compression is somewhat similar to CSO.

You’re right about ePSXe. Play it on the PC, save after the disc swap, then move the savegame file to the PSP and continue playing.
