DOSBox Build 0.71.26.11.2007.2 — Compatible w/ PSP Slim

Posted by greg

Been awhile since we’ve covered CrazyC’s DOSBox port for the PSP. Here is a new build compatible with custom firmware 3.xx and PSP Slims.

Uneducated users should know DOSBox emulates an Intel x86 PC with its own DOS-like command prompt. While lacking many features supported in MS-DOS, it is capable of installing and running most DOS games. Check out a full compatibility list here. Please note: you may encounter compatibility issues with certain disk images under this particular port.

CrazyC notes…

Here is a test build for 3.xx kernels. It’s completely untested other then I know it starts on my fat with the 3.52 kernel. It should work on the slim but at the moment, it doesn’t use the extra RAM.

Also, those bus error crashes a few pages back can be avoided by using dos32a, but GTA1 still doesn’t work because it runs out of memory.

Hmm Roms for this? I mean I know its illegal to ask for websites thats why Im “Not” asking. So if some1 could tell me where NOT to go to get roms so I know what to stay away from that’d be great.

This is a common ingnorance that just irritates me. Not everything run by emulators is a rom. A rom is the “Read Only Memory” dump from a cartridge .this does not run roms. it runs dos software. so if you want to play dos games, make a disc image of your game. (iso! Not rom). btw, make ‘em yourself!

    Almost != The same

It’s a bugbear of mine too. In fact, this distinction was discussed by MESSdev many years ago, so I helped to introduce the directory structure that you see today in that emulator.

How do you use this, I cant seem to access the drive, when I eventually figured out the many combiniations to write letters using multitaps on keys a DIR/W doesnt even show what game folders are on there. I thought I would at last get to play Trog!! :-(

Dosbox is awsome! I’ve actually been using it alot lately. And I was wondering how wel do thel games run on the psp version of it, Like I dont care about doom (there is already a fine port for it) but more like games such as Raptor: Call of the shadows And Skyroads and hugo’s house of horrors. Also, since a computer obviously uses alot of “buttons” to playa game, how hard is it to play a game that uses a keyboard with the psp?

Um yeah, why isn’t there a readme file or an explanation? I can’t figure out for the life of me how to type stuff in, and that has me wondering how this will function on the PSP.

hmm emulating something on an emulator…lemme ask you something, if you run virtual pc on mac osx and run a pc game on that will it run faster than on a vista boot?…not likely lol…twice the processing power is needed since you are running two hefty programs

makes sense. just thought I’d put it out there, it was worth a try. It’s not like I’m not familiar with computers and programming, I just figured it’d be worth asking. As a musician, I’m a bit of a perfectionist about music in games, so it really drags down the experience for me in something like Tales of Phantasia or Seiken Densetsu 3 where the music lags so much :(

You’d need windows for SNES9x. I’m still trying to get it to work :)
A direct copy of a Windows 3.1 setup fails:
    ERROR LOADING GDI.EXE

    Atleast it TRIES :)

I wonder if I can play MDK… Not MKD2, I’m talking about the original.

:slap: Prolly not because it uses directdraw and makes use of a SVGA (8 MB I think). But on a PC I’m sure it can run in DOS.

if anyone is having trouble, here’s a little trick to get your games to boot as soon as you start the emulator.

open dosbox.conf with notepad, at the very bottom you’ll see where it says to insert command lines for startup.

let’s use duke3d for example. place the game in the dir ms0/duke3d

now in the dosbox.conf type this line at the very bottom.

    mount c ms0:/duke3d

this tells dosbox that the duke3d folder is drive c, now type this line under it.

    c:/
to change the drive dir, and the third line…

    duke3d
    save and close dosbox.conf

now, as soon as you open dosbox, it will set the folder as c, switch to c, then run duke 3d. you can also set up a d drive and even run installers.

WeedZ1985, Um, what? Not understanding. I would understand if you’re talking about for a PC, but for use on the PSP, I don’t understand how you can get it to load from a drive…

You’re basically telling dosbox that a folder on your memstick is a drive.
say you put the duke3d folder on memstick. then you wrote
“mount c ms0:/duke3d” in the dosbox.config file. now the emulator “thinks” that the duke3d folder is actually drive c.

so now you can type c:/duke3d and it run the game, because duke3d is in the duke3d folder. get it?

you can “mount” other drives as well. say you want to install duke 3d to a folder on your memstick

copy cd contents to a folder on your memstick and call it “d”
make another and call it “c”
    now these lines here….

    mount c ms0:/c/
    mount d ms0:/d/

….will tell the emulator that the folders are actually drives, and will let you install a game from the d folder to the c folder. is anyone understanding this at all?

Okay, yeah, got it. But I can’t really test it, because, well, the typing. Is there anything out there to help with the typing? I can’t figure out keys for the life of me, and even if I could, using a PSP as a keyboard is tiresome as hell. Is there a program or at least an easy tutorial on this? Thanks.

you’re typing this in the dosbox.config file that comes with the program. there’s a section at the bottom for inserting commands to be run at startup. edit the config on your comp, then copy it to the psp and run.

yea, i’ve got it set up to run wolfinstien3d (did i spell that right?) right off the bat. works ok. duke 3d, however, seems to be loading for 20 mins or so then shuts off. maybe an update will be made later for speed increase. but we’re talking 32meg total ram. and the dos games only have access to 20. tryed allowing more ram access, but it crashes more often. i think dosbox needs at least 12megs to run properly.

It’s a wonderful program. Unfortunately it keeps crashing on my favorite DOS game of all time: Master of Magic.

Another favorite, Gabriel Knight, runs but is incredibly slow and no sound. What’s wierd is that GK actually ran faster on an older version of dosbox (01062007).

Has anyone tried or have any thoughts on whether fall out 2 would work on the psp through dosbox?

    fall out 2 min requirements

doubtful, its the DirectX compatible SVGA card thats going to do it in. Also, fallout 2 is barely playable on the computer dosbox without lagging horrendously. :/
