SEGA Saturn Emulation Possible with Yabause!

greg | November 19, 2007

For all the SEGA Saturn skeptics out there, namely here in the comments — this is for you! Introducing Yabause, an early test version which is developing into a full-fledged SEGA Saturn emulator for the PSP. Yep, it is possible after all.

SEGA Saturn Emulator Screenshot

Installation follows the same steps as any other homebrew app or game. We have a 1.50 kernel compiled version, as well a build for custom firmwares 3.xx. You will however need to obtain the SEGA Saturn BIOS by using those resourceful Googling skills you have. Once found, rename to “saturn.bin” and copy the 512KB BIOS file to your memory stick, under PSP/GAME/yabause or PSP/GAME150/yabause — depending which version you downloaded.

Download:
Yabause 0.9.1 fw 1.50
Yabause 0.9.1 cfw 3.xx

Sega Saturn’s games just didnt have clout. They only had like 200-300 games, and that’s just the japanese releases. The US didnt really catch on. Virtua Cop and maybe SF:Ultra were worth the $80-a-piece games.

Darius Gaiden (not me, haha) and Virtua Fighter were cold too.

Yeah, there were no games for the system. Only over 1400 titles released in Japan alone, and 200 plus US releases that included games like Guardian Heroes, Burning Rangers and PDS.

Yeah. Some dumbass said you need a PC with a 2.8 Ghz processor. WTFBBQ

He also stated that the requirements are higher than that of PCSX2 (PS2 emulator). Again, wtfbbq.

The Saturn used two RISC CPUs, plus 6 other processors (not counting the processor used to control the CD-ROM) so whether he’s a dumbass or not, he was right.

I’m definitely going to test it out, but based on what I’ve read so far, you’re not going to want, or be able, to actually play games on this, even if you can get them to load.

From a technical standpoint, a working Saturn emulator would probably be more difficult to create than a PS2 emulator simply because you’d either have to emulate all 8 processors or create code to translate the instruction sets to run on the PSP’s processors.

I’m not saying this isn’t cool or anything, but I doubt it will ever emulate the Saturn as well as Daedalus emulates the N64 and even that is far from perfect. Not trying to trash talk Daedalus, it’s way more than I’m capable of, but a brutally honest assessment leaves it wanting in several areas.

The Sega Saturn’s two primary CPUs are SH-2s, not RISC. It aalso has two graphics processors (VDPs), and a couple sound chips. The PSP cannot emulate these all in real time, ever. If you want to play Sega Saturn games, buy a Sega Saturn. They are cheap.

the fact is though that the BEST pc saturn emulator out there actually does have higher requirements than pcsx2. granted, its capable of running most games at full speed, but for how bad the games actually look (by todays standards, even for psp standards) its insanely high.

now dont get me wrong, id love for this to turn out in the end and be able to run saturn games full speed on my psp some day, but facts are facts, and all the proof of concept apps arent going to change the fact that the psp will never be able to run a saturn emulator well at all.

and as i said earlier, id like to eat my words here some day, but i very much doubt i will be doing so.

This reminds me of the DS emulator, that was ported and then never updated. Oh right, it was from the same person. So, this won’t get updated, and neither will it ever get any higher than this, as it just isn’t possible to emulate full speed.

So, the doubters were right :) This will never be possible full speed.

the saturn emulation on pc is now close to 100% but to get full speed on that emu you need one hell of a pc with dual cpu instructions and the emu still needs work ,its been worked on for 4 years, theres 3 other saturn emulators that cant do anywhere near as much so to think the psp can emulate the saturn is crazy.

i wanted to relive my saturn days so i bought a saturn, and for the record the saturn has about 60
very top games on it,some are that good that they deserve and have devoted websites to their name, the ps1 has less in my opinion but still i think ps1 has great games.

dont knock the saturn, buy one on ebay

Sega purchased the rights to an extremely speedy saturn emulator for their saturn download service back in 99. You can wiki it. It was written entirely in assembly so it ran awful fast, and that was on the POS comps at the time. So if someone really ever wanted to and had the genius, anything is posssssible.

to any of the idiots that actually think this thing will ever get off the ground, heres the requirements for ssf”

CPU - At least a Pentium 4 3.2Ghz or AMD64. SSF cannot run on a Pentium 3, Duron, Athlon XP or 32bit Semprons (Socket A) due to requiring SSE2 instructions not available in these and older CPUs. A Core 2 Duo E6300 is recommended for full-speed.

Graphics card - A fast Direct X 9 compliant graphics card. The SSF author recommended at least a GeForce 6600GT and I too have verified this works perfectly even the AGP version. In theory an ATI/AMD Radeon 9800 should also be fine but I am unable to test this. Intel graphics built in to many laptops and motherboards are too slow to run SSF properly.

the psps hardware isnt ANYWHERE NEAR as powerful as a computer with these specs, and to be completly honest core 2 duos and geforce 6 series cards run circles around the psp just by themselves.

You’re speaking in terms of SSF. By my (admittedly somewhat limited) understanding, part of the reason for those high requirements are the SSE2 instructions required by that emu, which weren’t supported by earlier CPUs. A better comparison would be GiriGiri (as mentioned earlier), which (due to it’s use of Assembly) ran Guardian Heroes and many other games full speed on my Athlon XP 2200+ (and on far lesser systems as well). I’m not saying this is likely to happen with the PSP (it would be a bit of a stretch). I’m just saying I wouldn’t consider it entirely impossible with quite a bit of time and effort from a brilliant individual with skills/knowledge/experience far exceeding my own. I just HATE to see people who’ve done nothing to contribute to the scene knock the work of others who are at least making an effort. Often times these are the same morons who make comments like “You suck! This public beta PS2 emulator you just released this week doesn’t run game X perfectly and full speed on my 486-33 with 4 megs of ram! WTF!”. History is filled with great minds who were often criticized and told their ideas were impossible. The funny thing is, I have yet to see the names of any of their critics revered by anyone for their legendary bitching skills.

Comment by dumbass
2007-11-20 18:49:52

yes, your correct, there are people who have been told they cant and done it anyway. but you know what, there are even more cases of people who were told you cant only to find that the people who told them they couldnt were right. but you never hear of those stories. why? because they arent really worth hearing about now are they?

girigiri sucks to be honest. its a bitch to get running and even if you do get it running the game support sucks as well.

and how the bloody hell do you know ive not contriuted to the scene i might add? i worked on a saturn emulator for the xbox several years ago that didnt pan out, so i know what im talking about when i say that getting a saturn emulator to run on anything is a bitch and a quarter.

the psp wont ever be able to run it at full speed. fact is theres just too much hardware that the psp has to emulate at one time. maybe a second generation of the psp would be able to, but not the psp.

Comment by MoreRealisticAnalogy
2007-11-20 19:04:06

Thank you for proving my point. “girigiri sucks to be honest”? That’s exactly the negative attitude I’m talking about. It was an incomplete WIP that was bought before it had a chance to completely evolve and live up to its potential. That’s like eating an uncooked chicken dish and criticizing the chef because it doesn’t suit your palette.

Comment by dumbass
2007-11-20 20:40:56

im talking about its complete form, AFTER sega bought it and it was “finished”. there are places on this little unpopular thing called “teh interweb” to find it you know. hacked versions of course but its still out there. and that version rightfully does suck, in fact id dare say that the last public version is better than the “finished” version (notice how i keep putting finished in quotes).

im being a negative nancy here, but for good reason. as i said, there are exponentially more times where people are told they cant do something and it turns out in the end that they cant, and this is one of those cases. the psp does not have the power necessary to run a saturn emulator effictively at all. maybe some simple 2d sprite based games, but even those are very likely to be stuck at a grinding halt when it comes to framerate, want to try for more complex 3d games?

it may sound negative, but theres a difference between being negative and being truthful, and even though the truth hurts its still the truth.

(Comments wont nest below this level)
Comment by MoreRealisticAnalogy
2007-11-20 21:59:32

What makes you the all-knowing judge of what is/isn’t the truth, and what do you gain by discouraging someone or putting down their work? If you manage to convince them to stop, they DEFINITELY won’t contribute anything or make any progress and you ruin things for the author and the community. If you keep your negativity to yourself, they may surprise you and contribute something worthwhile. So let’s look at the REAL truth…

Discourage Someone
————————-
-No progress
-Nothing gained

Don’t Discourage Someone
——————————–
-Possible gain (they may prove you wrong)
-At worst, they fail and gain some experience

So, which is the more logical decision?

Comment by dumbass
2007-11-20 22:08:27

ever develop a saturn emulator before? i have. one for the xbox and it wouldnt work worth crap. if the xbox cant handle one then the psp certainly wont.

as i said earlier, id LOVE to see a working saturn emulator for the psp, i really would. but the FACT is that even the xbox cant properly emulate the saturn. the xbox is a hell of a lot more powerful than the psp is, so what makes you think that if the xbox cant emulate the saturn that the psp will be able to?

so ill offer some words of encouragment here, continue on this emulator. please do, and when you are finally done and this thing cant run worth a living shit then maybe some of these idiots will learn that there are some things in this world that really ARE physically impossible.

or prove me wrong, and get this son of a bitch working properly and ill donate $2000 to your ass so you can work on a dreamcast or ps2 emulator for the psp as well.

Comment by MoreRealisticAnalogy
2007-11-20 23:37:41

The Xbox couldn’t emulate the Saturn, or YOU couldn’t get it to? No matter how good you (think you) are at something, there’s always someone better. For the record, I never said it could or couldn’t be done, I just said there’s no reason to try to stop someone from trying if they believe they can. I seem to remember MANY people who said we’d never play PSX games on the PSP. I wouldn’t be surprised if you were one of them. Sure, Sony could do it a lot faster/easier given their detailed knowledge of both systems, but the fact that it COULD be done speaks for itself. Personally, I’d like to see you offer some personal info/guarantee on the $2000 offer as an incentive. Be careful now! You wouldn’t want to do something productive/positive by accident!

Comment by dumbass
2007-11-21 01:38:27

yes, your correct in that WE couldnt get the xbox to emulate the saturn, but for the record its not something that we tried at for a day or a week or some short time, we tried for about 2 years. at the end of the whole thing we had a lot of games running, just not well. at best we had 3 or 4 games running ok, but not well enough to be playable, and they were all simple 2d games. the majority of the games however didnt run worth shit. so in the end we just decided to stop working on it. partly because we hadent seen in real progress in terms of games actuall running, and partly becasue we were just sick and tired of how much of a bitch the bloody thing was.

now enough reminising. id love to see this pan out some day. but there ARE a couple of facts that need to be taken into consideration. one is that the emulator in question isnt even fully working on the pc yet and from the looks of it is quite a bit off in that regard. that being said, a psp port isnt exactly going to be the greatest either. the second (and most important) fact is what i have kept saying all along. the saturn (if youve ever even looked at its hardware) is a literal bitch. the thing is the WORST designed system from a hardware standpoint. i mean hell, even game programmers found the damn thing a bitch to work with. now your talking about emulation it? with a saturn emulator youve got somewhere in the neighborhood of a dozen different tasks going on simontaniously just in order to emulate the hardware. all of that hardware emulating isnt easy on the processors emulating it either. then youve got the timings and connections between the different emulated components to get right (which is one of the biggest problems with emulation) and even after all they you still havent rendered the assets.

and you keep getting on this kick about people saying the psx coulnt be emulated on the psp. well a couple of things you need to know first. one is that the saturn IS quite a bit more powerful than was the orginal playstation. however, being as it was a bitch to program for no games ever showed this. two is taht with a psx emulator you dont have to emulate even half of what has to be eumlated with a saturn emulator and three is that sony developed the psp with the intention of making it so that they could sell old psx games through their online store so that people could play psx games on the psp, they did no such thing with the saturn.

now as i said, id LOVE to see a working saturn emulator for the psp that emulates games full speed. id love to take my old saturn games around with me like i do my snes, nes, psx, etc. games now, but i really think thats very unlikely to happen with this psp. depending on what sony puts in it the next psp might be able to, but i very much doubt this one will. theres just too much thats happening with a saturn emulator to get it working properly and i really doubt the psp has the processing power to do so.

once a fully documented saturn emulator is released for pc with all instructions emulated fully with a source then hell yeh it could in turn be ported to psp and it would run dredfully slow ,that is unless it has been writen totaly for psp hardware or a hardware equivalent.

it is possible ,if you look in detail at the saturn games that were released for pc windows 98, you will find they are infact emulated from sega saturn code and they can run on 400mhz with 64ram.

An excellent proof of principle homebrew. It took me awhile to get a game to run until I tried a “game.bin” file, as compared to a “game.iso” file (which is slightly funny since the Sega CD emu seems to run okay off an iso format.

Another emu that was a good “proof of principle” was the Atari Jaguar one from years ago (it was cool to see Aliens vs. Predator boot up, but at 1 frame per second, the fun did not last long).

Thanks for the thrill of seeing a Sega Saturn on my PSP!

i think ,folks get confused when someone says its impossible to have saturn emulated on psp ,sure it can be done, hell the psp could emulate the ps3 or xbox 360 if there was a pc emu out there that could boot a bios at 1fps,an emulator port can be done very easily to psp as long as its writen in a language the psp can understand but can the psp run n64,saturn or any other emulator ported from
pc that requires very high spec hardware ? (no)

it all depends on the emulator that is ported in the first place, giri giri runs fast on a low spec pc but the emulation source for giri giri is incripted and was never in a complete form so if giri giri was ported to psp if possible you would see some nice frame rates on psp but many graphics glitches as well just like on psp.

thats the main reason i dont think deadalus will go far,and also why folks should stop wasting peoples time releasing ports of emus that CANT be run on psp.

This is cool but can some learned person make a dreamcast emulator for the PSP? people have tried and come up with emulators such as chancast, even though it is not that good (major resource hog) it shows it can be done on the PC.

Yah Dreamcast emulation would be ultimate dude, games like skies of arcadia, shenmue 2, record of lodoss war, echo the dolphin, snk vs capcom 2, resident evil code veronica and grandia 2. is it even possible though to emulate the DC?
