PicoDrive — SEGA Genesis & SEGA CD Emulator Released *Updated*

greg | November 18, 2007

Update: Version 1.35a has been released. The quoted paragraph below details the changes…

Well that test-a-bios-and-you-are-screwed bug was quite a serious one, so I’ve done an update:

fixed a bug which prevented to load any ROMs after testing the BIOS.
fixed incorrect CZ80 memory map setup, which caused Z80 crashes and graphics corruption in EU Mega CD model1 BIOS menus.
added additional “set to 4:3 scaled” display option for convenience.
added an option to disable frame limitter (works only with non-auto frameskip).

Something new to occupy a megabyte or two on your memory stick — PicoDrive! The readme details everything you must know about Notaz’ latest SEGA Genesis / Mega CD emulator. Still requires a bit of work, but works well no less.

Cobra Command

This is yet another Megadrive / Genesis emulator for PSP, but with Sega CD / Mega CD support. Although it has been originally written having ARM CPU based devices in mind, it has now been ported to PSP too, by replacing ARM specific parts with portable C code. The base code originates from Dave’s (fdave, finalburn) PicoDrive 0.30 for Pocket PC. The Sega/Mega CD code is roughly based on Stephane Dallongeville’s Gens.

finally. and to all of those who said a sega cd emulator for the psp wasant possible your all idiots. saturn, yes, thats not possibe (but then again barely anything can run a saturn emulator), but theres no reason the psp cant handle sega cd games.

Comment by JOshISPoser
2007-11-18 20:22:19

I wouldn’t say saturn isn’t possible…
they said n64 wasn’t…that was disproved
they said psx wasn’t…that was disproved
if both those can run, saturn is arms length aways imo
It might be slow like the proof of concept psx emu, but i think it could happen

the PSP can not and will not ever emulate the Saturn. To emulate a Saturn on a PC requires I believe a 2.8ghz processor

you really dont know just how difficult saturn emulation is, do you? i mean hell, pcsx2 has lower requirements than the best saturn emulator last i checked. not only that but the saturn was absolutly THE WORST system from a hardware standpoint. a horrid bitch to program for even, why so many devs left the system high and dry and went to work on making games for the playstation instead, easier to program for. emulating it on the psp IS impossible, the xbox cant even emulate it so why do you think the psp will be able to?

there’s a downloadable early version of a sega saturn emulator for the psp…I wouldn’t say anything IS impossible…

You cannot emulate Sega Saturn is real time or even close to it on the PSP. The 333mhz MIPS cpu isn’t capable of emulating the Sega Saturn’s multiple CPUs and VDPs in real time or anywhere close to it.

Just consider how demanding PC emulators of Sega Saturn are and how inferior the PSP is to such a PC. Either way, no amount of fanboyism or dick sucking of an emulator author will get you Sega Saturn emulation with a good framerate.

i try’d some megadrive roms on picodrive and wow ,they all run super smooth and all the games that didnt work on gens work fine like EA sports titles and dragons fury ,also i have/used all sega emulators for pc and i have never saw once an emulator boot (virtua racing) megadrive version as its not supported and no one has ever emulated it as its hardware is unknown yet picodrive boots it and you can see menus and here music.

superb emulator for psp,32x emulation would only be nice for mabe 2 or 3 games so its really not a big deal, while segacd has many top games.

NHL 98 doesnt work as it freezes at the EA Sports screen. I know my rom is not bad as it works on my xbox and my other portable gaming system which runs pico also. I couldnt get it to run on the dgen either. Most of my other roms i tried have worked fine though

if anyone is having probs getting iso’s to work read this ..

when you have segacd iso it should have audio files, between 5 or 50 of them, the audio files should be in mp3 format.

the name convention of both iso and mp3 is important but the titles/names can be what ever you like example ..

iso sonic cd
can be named sonic.iso or abcd.iso

but the mp3 should be named the same in regards to the iso like this …

sonic.iso
sonic_02.mp3
sonic_03.mp3

or
abcd.iso
abcd_02.mp3
abcd_03.mp3

it doesnt matter what you call the game/iso as long as the mp3’s follow the same name.
track 01 is always the iso so your audio always starts at track 02.

hope this helps

2007-11-20 07:04:57

anyone having problems running some segacd games needs to enable (megacd options) (better sync) this option is needed for some games that have fmv in the intro or through out the game, you can enable it to get past the intro then disable it when playin the game as it does slow down the emulator.

there is a a fix to the above, once (better sync) is enabled you can then disable (emulate z80) from within (advanced options) this will speed everything back up enabling fmv games like road avenger and cobra command to run much faster, tho if you do this you will need to set the renderer to (fast) and also frame skip to (2).

compatibility for segacd
—————————
sonic cd - snatcher - road avenger
cobra command - shining force cd
heart of alien - dracula unleashed
dungeon explorer - ecco the dolphin cd
final fight cd - keio flying squadron
lunar- mad dog mcree - mortal kombat cd
prince of persia - rise of the dragon
robo aleste - sol feace - thunder strike
time gal- soul star

all working fine tho some games need different setting to boot or to run at a good frame rate.

im testing another 20 segacd games the nite

I’m having problems with the audio and my game wont play. It’s in iso/mp3 format. I have it renames as DarkWizard.iso DarkWizard_02.mp3 DarkWizard_03.mp3 Darkwizard_04.mp3 etc… The iso loads, but then I get an error that the mp3 files aren’t in the right format, that they should be 44100K. They already ARE. I’ve messed around with every combination of CDDA and PCM off/on config, and the mp3 files still won’t load. I’m really frustrated. HELP!!!

It says “Wrong format, must be 44,100″. The thing is, they already ARE! I’ve verified this with Nero media player and Winamp. I’ve tried mesing around with the CDDA/PCM settings, using every combo there is, and the mp3’s still won’t load. Someone HELP!!!

Problems with sound …

use program called (Media coder google it)

Just open it, set the ‘LAME MP3′ tab on the right to CBR, Stereo and somewhere from 96-128Kbps, go to the ‘audio’ tab on the left and set resample to 44100, set the output folder up top, hit ‘add’, choose all the mp3s, hit start and wait.

i got this information else where and had to sort some of my own mp3s out for segacd isos and this method works great.

detonator orgun - puggsy cd - f1 circus - bc racers - slipheed - starblade - jaguar racer - battle fantasy -space adventure cobra - road rash cd - ecco the dolphin 2 - popfull mail - lunar 2 - sonic cd (us) afterburner 3 - battlecorps - flashback cd -

all working so far but roadrash seems very slow unless frameskip is on and also needs the sync fix
anyone playing sonic cd should use the usa iso as it runs much smoother than the pal 50 uk iso,if you dont like the us music just change it with uk music.

i love this emu but i would love to see a few added options but i hate to ask …

1,set frame rate to adjust (ability to set to 50 or 60 fps not dependant on bios.
2,scanline (makes fmv games and intros look much better.
3,overclock volume (i find this emu very quiet)
4,include more button setups to (better sync) can be mapped to a button (needed mostly for intros)

i really cant think of anything else this emu needs, its superb.

Comment by Paddy
2007-11-26 09:20:59

bios files dont go in a folder, they should be in the main emu directory folder along with the emu eboot, bios files should also be named correctly.

you can use nero burning rom or any other program that lets you create an iso of a cd or dvd disc, but in the case of megacd and also sega saturn you should create an iso and also rip out the in game audio, nero does this nicely and i sugest you use nero.

in nero options ,choose nero burning rom,not nero express or smartstart, once the window has opened click on EXTRAS at top and choose SAVE TRACKS ,make sure your game disc is in the drive and it should load up showing you track 1 iso and then track 2 and track 3 and so on.

from here you can rip the iso file and the audio, you can rip the iso as nrg (nero iso format)
but you shouldnt choose nrg ,you want raw iso and for the audio tracks choose mp3.

once you highlight your iso or music track choose
the file type format to convert to,this is done through the output file format tab in the middle of the window,so if you have the iso highlighted you will be able to change the output format to iso or nrg, same with audio,mp3 or wav or whatever .

Comment by Paddy
2007-11-26 09:31:16

once you have ripped your game disc ,you should have 1 iso and several mp3 tracks, they should all go in a folder together and should also be named in a cetain way.

the iso should always be track 01 ,but it can be called what ever you like ,soniccd_01.iso
(( _01.iso )) is the important part and the audio mp3s should follow the same name.

soniccd_01.iso

the mp3 tracks should be named the same

soniccd_02.mp3
soniccd_03.mp3
and so on ….

when you have ripped your gamedisc ,iso and mp3 tracks ,nero will have numbered them for you, you should keep them in that order as thats the correct order the tracks play on the original disc,so you only need to rename your iso and mp3 tracks slightly but keep the track numbers.

this method is the exact same with sega saturn games and this is how pc emulators run megacd and saturn games.
