Daedalus R13 (N64 Emulator) Released!

StrmnNrmn delivers Daedalus R13 — the long awaited update to his Nintendo 64 emulation project for the PSP. As you may or may not know, R13 introduces savestates and a number of optimizations to the dynarec core.
Savestates are accessible via the pause menu allowing you to save your progress at any point. They’re written to the memory stick and occupy ~ 1MB per slot. Load savestates from the same pause menu or the front end — tap the right shoulder button to swap between the rom & savestate list.
Depending on which rom is being played, you may notice a 10-20% speedup. Should you encounter any roms which once worked under R12, but are now broken using R13, try disabling ‘dynamic recompilation’ and/or ‘dynarec stack optimisation’ from the rom’s preferences screen.

Like it or not, if you don’t like updates which are by far not “Complete” or “Final” then what in the hell are you doing downloading them? Even full blown Sony purchased software doesn’t take a single person 6 months to produce. There is a team of people, often in full production, have you ever sat and watched the credits at the end of a game…YES it takes a lot of people to produce high quality products.
When coders release updates to the public, they aren’t necessarily asking for praise, they are getting information on how their software is running, and what bugs the software has in it’s current state of programming. Of course, people with as low of IQ as a lot of the people who hang out on this site, who think that anyone can make a program 100%…it’s just beyond you. and I have one word to describe your kind:

nothing that you can see at least. You do realize in emulation not much of the improvements can be seen. 10-20% speed increase can be attributed to processor emulation enhancements, handling, ect. Most of the stuff improved doesn’t appear to the user except in speed increments.
And to the guy who said it felt like it was running on a Pentium III….Wow, now let’s compile the N64 Emulator to run on a Pentium II at 333MHz, with 32MB RAM, and a 4GB HDD. Even ZSNES doesn’t run SNES titles at 100% on a 333MHz Intel processor….

A lot of new age gamers who might be just getting into the scene may be wondering such. It’s the big question, why go back.
Myself, having played games since the days of Pong, have come to this conclusion. Games in the 8 bit and 16 bit era was the golden age of gaming. Most older systems did not have the 3D graphics, or capability to do such graphics. So the game manufacturers had to do something to make the games more appealing, make the gameplay better.
In today’s gaming world, you can have the WORST gameplay, but it will sell because it has good graphics. Back in the days, graphics were good, but to set the games apart from the rest, it had to actually be a good game.
i would have to agree that most of the new era game are crap with good grafix i brought halo3 on the weekend for my son and he finished it in like 3 hours for a game with such big wrap is just a waste of money so yes i would have to agree that games may look better but are getting smaller and worse game play even forza 2 is the same game with better grafix with all this power they have they could have at least given a cockpit view anyway this is a bit of topic

The “Return to Main Menu” option resumes emulation rather than taking me back to the main menu, and the emulation is WAY slower than R12 in Banjo-Kazooie. It was running at like 10FPS on the opening thing, where it runs at about 6FPS now. IDK what’s wrong with it, but it’s not as good as R12.

You must download the 1.00 version… because on the Psp Slim, version 1.50 software has been disabled. If you download the 1.00 version, you should only end up with one folder. Stick that inside PSP\GAME or any GAME folder Combo (Game150, GAME 360, GAME371 ect…)

Super Smash Bros. Gets about 25-30 and looks like it’s in slow motion! (Don’t even bother trying sound).

for R14, and as you have now included savestates why dont you concentrate on speed for one game only, IE mario kart… if you could get that game to work flawlessly then i’m sure others will reap the benefits of your work.
We appreciate your attempts to get a N64 emu running on PSP. But the truth is, no one cares about a N64 emu that can’t run the games in a playable state. N64 is so cheap it’s practically free and most of us will most likely stick to that. Until this emulator is running more smoothly people aren’t going to waste their mem card space on having it on their PsP.
Not to argue but thats not true. Alot of people enjoy this. Super smash brothers and Zelda on a psp is nice. Who cares if its not full speed Your still playing it….

8GB Memory Stick still doesn’t supersede the 32MB RAM. Games run in Physical Memory, not from the Memory Stick.

Good emulator, i love waiting for strmnnrmns releases, he makes them exciting. I was however let down by this release. The save states are great, but in mario 64 i’ve noticed a lot more graphical issues than in previous releases. Also, does anyone know of a game that improved drastically? Sweet emu.

All i gotta say is this is a great improvement , smash bros,mario kart , mario 64 running great, almost very very close to 100% .. CHECK YOUR ROM version get an uncompressed rom.
sometimes it your rom that makes the game slow.

OMG I cannot believe people actually hate on the devlopers beacuse it’s not running at 100% speed. I’m no coder or programer im actually a hardware technician and i have a couple friends that can program and i got to say it’s amazing how far they have come with this emulator it’s insane and they deserve props for all the hard work they put into it. If your not happy with how the emulator runs dont use it and definitely dont come here and disrespect the people that made it possible for a N64 rom to run on your psp in the first place. Just want to say good job to everyone that helped to make this emulator you guys are doing an awesome job and im looking foward to future releases.

your on crack… if slow fps is what you like.. then you have a low mind as well… try to keep up with real fps… your mind wont make the speed.
It’s better not to release any emulators until it reaches at least 90% speed and 50% compatibility.
That being said, the programmer for this emulator is doing a great job, but should NOT publish this, until (if) it reaches the aforementioned speed/comp. ratios.
Otherwise, the emulator is worthless and the degradative comments HAVE a point, and are absolutely right.
There is no point on playing on a slow/incompatible emulator.
wow, you obviously haven’t been in the emulation scene for very long. They released an Xbox emulator for the PC that couldn’t even play games, but could get to the title screen of Halo.
Most emulation projects start in this way, and have many updates LONG before they are actually able to run commercial games…
Losers who constantly say how they shouldn’t release emulators unless they are over 90%…would NEVER see many of the emulators on the PSP. (News for you, if you have any kind of brain in that pea sized head of yours, 333MHz isn’t all that fast. It is equivalent to a PII, and SNES, Genesis, N64 do not run at 100% until you get to about 700MHz….they usually have to frameskip for a lot of the games. N64 doesn’t run at 100% until you hit 2.0GHz, with at least 256MB RAM.)

all i would like to say is that i think hes doing a GREAT job on emulating a system that really wont ever be able to go at 100% but i mean this emulator is worthless to me even with the save states :( …… I will wait untill R20 when it works at 90% then i will be happy, all i would like to say is good work but its to laggy for me :/

wow this is great! mad respect to StrmnNrmn for this updated release!! definately a great boost in performance now and I’m noticing quite alot of games running at an almost perfectly playable state. And speaking of states, the savestate works great. Loving this! Was well worth the wait =)
nice work ..although i am just gonna stick with project64 for the pc ..lol …shown some great improvements and i know it will someday have great playable speed and compatibily will be great too… just keep up the good work chief.

just tested last nite,i noticed games run slower, frame limit 0 doesnt seem to limit 0,games that didnt work in last release still dont work,i try’d all options but games really run more poorly than before.
also noticed one major bug ,once a game is loaded you cant exit the game from the menu ,you choose the option to go back to main menu but it just goes back to the game currently running ,also when this happens you cant exit to xml menu.
really wouldnt use save state as its not needed just now and im not a cheater anyway and cant see this version update being in anyway an improvment but i know for sure there is an improvment in the long run.

i totaly disagree with all the haters, but erm, buy n64 console ,dam man i just sold 3 of them, they are shit, the emulated way is much better and always will be,that said tho ,the emulator needs to be half decent.i think this psp emu is very good indeed and i hope the author ignores all this crap about releases, i actuly like monthly releses and i wish i could beta test.

the n64 has over 30 top games and another 15 or so note worthy games ,i wish compatability was the first thing to be addressed,from what i remember with every known emulator compatability is usualy first then speed ups later on along with sound implemention and i for one am happy to wait a few years for this to happen but lol you need to write an emu from scratch to get these kind of possibilities and this is just a port.
iv always prefered emulation to actual console as theres lots of benefits to emulators ,sound graphics,network play,control scemes and the rest.
try playing a sega megadrive or n64 these days its a nightmare,crap controller,quarter lenth borders at top,bottom and left hand side of screen ,slowdown,blurry pixelated graphics,poor sound quality,50hz,and the fact you need to drag it all out the loft for 20 minz of play.
Been using daedalus since R6 and you just make it better every time. People who don’t respect Daedalus don’t deserver to have hacked PSPs, they don’t know what this mod community is about.
as far as I’m concerned StrmnNrmn is right up there with Booster and DarkAlex, he makes the most advanced PSP emulator by far and always gives us something to look forward to. Great job man, and those who doubt you obviously don’t know shit!
i have to say that i think this emu is a WASTE OF TIME. He’s porting it like paddy sed. Write from scratch, work on making the games PLAYABLE, fuck. Good to see some improvement. I think this emulator is pretty cool, but I do agree that starting from scratch would be ideal. More importantly: I respect anyone working on anything even remotely interesting (but also free mind you) if it has to do with the PSP.

just can implement a sound support(better one) and more speed up I think it is soon time to make games more compatible… because if they are they would run better on the emulator and that would give a speed up. for example if someone could make N64 games to wide format… that would give a speed upp because then the psp wouldnt need to make the 4:3 scale to 16:9. i think customization for the buttons for each individual game should be inmpied, having more buttons on the N64 controller than on the psp makes ir akward and there are usually buttons that we dont use and tehre are always buttons tghat we use more than others, i just think it would make gameplay a lot easier

I think it’s fantastic. I hope StrmnNrmn isn’t listening to any of the ingrates out there. Perfect Dark still doesn’t work yet, but the fastest game I have, Hydro Thunder, is pretty playable now.
