Snes9xTYL 0.4.2 ME for the PSP Slim!

Posted by greg

I read a couple days back that Chilly Willy was working on a ME enabled version of YoyoFR’s SNES emulator for the Slim.

And now, Chilly Willy, along side CaptShoe, have released a MediaEngine supported version of Snes9xTYL. Enjoy Super Nintendo emulation at its finest! It of course works on fat PSPs too.

Zombies at my Neighbors!

One major limitation is noted…

…you cannot change the speed. It’s hard coded for 333 MHz. This is because you cannot change the CPU speed while the MediaEngine is running or the Slim hangs. In a related issue, sleep mode has been disabled since sleep would have done nothing at all. As such, this will drain your battery rapidly. Once I figure out how to change the speed after the ME has been initialized, I can change this aspect pretty easily. For now, full speed, and pressing the power button does nothing.

The difference is that some of the sound processing is executed on the mediaengine (me) which is just another MIPS processor available on the PSP. So yes, there is a noticeable speed improvement.

chickendicer: Try disable some plugins. If you have CFE, start with that. (It’s in the README)

I have tried it playing killer instinct. yes there is a LITTLE bit speed improvement. Is there any configuration for this to improve the speed or the game is the problem?

The games to test this ’speed improvement’ with is the Donkey Kong Country Series….especially number 3. At some points in the mine shafts it can lag a great deal with the special lighting effects.

i dont get this release ,i have been using the (ME) version of snesTLY for about 6 months as there are two versions for download (ME) and non (ME)

so what is this release all about ? yes i can see that it has been ported to slim psp so why has it been stated that its a new release and would be faster ?

Tom: A bit off topic, but you can speed up Donkey Kong by disabling “Pallete Updates” from the Hacks menu. It will probably take away from the lighting effects, as you say.

    Se7en30: yup, works on 3.71.

paddy: The non-ME version does everything on one CPU. The ME version moves some of sound processing onto the Mediaengine. So far, you were only able to run the ME version on 1.5 kernel based CFW. This release gets around this limitation. That’s all. If you have a 1.5 CFW then you’ll be just fine running the standard ME version that’s been out already.

Just a couple things I wanted to note… according to CWcheat, the program does not start in 333/166 but 222/111 (for me at least) and I can manually adjust the CPU clock speed from it without causing any crashing (and yes it does makes a difference. 40fps in CT to 60)

yeah when I turn on CWcheat it says 222/111 but I turn it up to 333/166 and then it runs fine might be cause I had a previous version config file but as long as the speed is at the highest then people shouldn’t have any problems with dk country wish I knew more about the psp programming maybe I could understand this more lol
