PSP Slim TV Out Example — Full Screen for Homebrews

greg | October 15, 2007

Stemming from the hands & keyboard of Dark_AleX is this sample “Hello World” app; it demonstrates the use of TV out when writing homebrews for the PSP Slim.

This is a sample to start the psp slim tv out from homebrew, using whatever cable (d-terminal has not been tested, but i think it has same code as component), and use it in full screen.

You start the sample normally, and then the sample connects to the tv out.

To use it in your code, you just have to replace the call to sceDisplaySetMode with the call to my custom function pspDveMgrSetVideoOut (which calls sceImposeSetVideoOutMode, which at the end calls sceDisplaySetMode), and be aware of the bigger resolution.

The good thing about the tv out, is that the resolution is really bigger (720×503 in composite, 720×480 in component), so it would be cool that video applications are ported to use it.

because he cant identify which is the textbox for email. obviously he doesnt know what is the word “name” for.

Actually it would be “he doesn’t know what the word “name” is for.”since we are on the topic of correction. What you put “he doesn’t know what is the word “name” for.”, doesn’t really make sense.

THE COLOURS CHILDREN!

Why is it always DAX and not Sony coming up with these ideas? I mean, I spent $20 on these cables and someone else has to “fix” them?

Well, anyway, thanks! Looking forward to more fullscreen fun.

That would indeed be very nice. Then it would be like a PS1… but smaller…

Yeah, most likely because you are a noob who keeps bricking it with dodgy firmware and peeing on it when you wet your bed each night.

I am glad to see I’m not the only fool around here…I too bought 5 psps…. 3 black ones I’ve had since launch 2005 till summer 2007, then I decided to get some cool ones, bought a fat blue one from Japan which I have only taken out of the box 2 times to upgrade, and a newly bought Silver Slim, which is now my daily user.

This is only a sample of fullscreenm used only for homebrew. I don’t think using it for games is a very good ideea. Why ? Upscaling the content would require extra processing power. And some games do take alot resources… And the people at Sony know this ! They’re not all morons you know… But it could be used in the future. Most games require 222 Mhz and only a few use the full 333 Mhz capacity (Logan’s Shadow, GoW, Loco Roco, etc) so there’s 111 Mhz left unused. Will it be enough ? Maybe with a few optimizations ? Maybe. But you can expect slowdowns and general lag in most games.

Anyway. Perhaps now emulators can use the TV-Out functionality. Imagine playing some good ‘ol NES on ya TV in FOOL SCREAM FTW !

Im speechless.. this is FREAKING AWESOME. I knew there would be some kind of homebrew for fullscreen games on psp slim… and now its a reality.

I wish I could donate to DAX, but I dont have a credit card.

Was there not a “Video Out” app made for the fat PSP some time ago? Did it work? I’m not sure. Someone enlighten me please!!!

Yes. You can connect the PSP to your PC, then connect the PC to the TV via the graphic card’s TV-Out. :) Too much hassle ? Hmm, maybe. But if your PC is near the TV (like mine is), you’ll be just fine. Or you can use extension cords to get a fair distance.

But if you’re asking for a mini USB to SDTV, that… is just… plain wrong… and technically impossible.

Smart Consumer Alert!!! PSP slim model has a progressive and interlace mode to plug to TV/LCD digital component. The problem with SONY invention is it designed for LCD screen for game. TV component only can play movie. That is pain to consumer like me because I got a digital component TV NOT LCD!!!

This is only a sample of the code and it’s more suitable for developers not regular users. Just wait till a proper homebrew emulator (or homebrew game) comes out. One that supports TV-Out. ;)

I know there is a product less than US60 from japan sold most in any PSP shop that you put your component cable to a converter then it can used to connect computer serial port. you can play in computer screen.

Why couldn’t this be made into a plugin that forces it into TV-Out? Cool though… I’ll porbally end up buying a slim I guess….
