PSP Firmware 3.71 Released

greg | September 13, 2007

Update: Yep — it’s out alright…

Notice: The [PlayStation Spot] icon that appeared as the result of the version 3.70 system software update is for a service that is not available in this region. This icon does not appear in version 3.71.

3.71 changes:

Network

  • [Assign Buttons] has been added to the (Remote Play) menu.

Video

  • Sequential playback of videos saved on Memory Stick Duo™ media is now supported.

Apparently PSP firmware 3.71 is now available via Network Update. Unfortunately I don’t have my PSP with me to confirm; however, I’ll be heading home shortly to check. If it is — you’ll see it here for download.

According to Eric Lempel over at the official PlayStation.Blog, “In addition, we are adding a new firmware update for PSP (3.71) as well, which adds many features that readers of this blog have requested.”

Hrm… Lets hope it doesn’t circumvent the use of Pandora’s Battery. No one has been requesting that! ;)

Stay tuned!

I wouldn’t recommend upgrading if you wish to keep compatibility with homebrew & custom firmwares.

Then again maybe they noticed they forgot to plug a hole or two in the recently released 3.70 and decided to push out 3.71 instead via network update.

Or 3.70 could of been just the update to circumvent the 3.60 exploit and they could be telling the truth about 3.71 having just what the users of the blog want.

So what do they want?

Where’s the release notes at? Seems a bit suspicious.

(There how about that for a first comment. It’s actually constructive and not a quick one to 4 four word flam or response.)

The new nokia N95 that’s coming out will have 8Gb built in.. Although a PSP with 8Gb internal would be pretty smart if it could happen..

lol no way. 8 GB Ram is too expensive for PCs, and would never be used in a mobile device at this point.

What I would request:
A good email client
A good calendar
An alarm clock
A waiting list for music
A paint program

wow greg you are late.. 3.71 was orginally going to have more features added but in fact it is just apparently a patch for some regions.. and i wish I had 8GB ram, but I’m only on 256mb.. how crap is that?

Comment by Joe
2007-09-13 17:44:50

Actually, I believe Pandora’s battery has already been “blocked” since 3.70. While Pandora’s battery still does boot on the slim, the “back to 3.60″ option doesn’t return you to 3.60, it just removes the M33 files.

Comment by Joe
2007-09-13 17:45:52

Oh, forgot to add doing that option will result in a brick according to many users on some other forum I was just reading maybe 5 minutes ago. So…don’t do it.

Pandoras battery does work on 3.71. Its been tested. It is impossible to stop pandora. The only thing that sony can do is modify battery production with a new battery that has no connection to the firmware.

The real battle between sony and hackers will be with the PSP2. Cant wait to see how kick ### that will be. Probably powerful enough to emulate n64 fully, and more advanced MAME games.

IMHO This whole Phat firmware/Slim Firmware is a total disaster. Just look at all the questions online. “Is this for the phat or the slim?”.

This disaster didnt even give sony more hack proof for the slim. LOL. This is going to be one giant major headache for sony with the average consumers becoming frustrated with this whole firmware blitz.

How many slims and phats will be bricked as a result of people installing a phat/slim firmware on the wrong unit. LOL.

In the end, you are only hurting yourself sony.

I agree… the smartest choice would have been to keep PSPSlim at 32MB… Now all us Fat owners just feel left out and (in a way) betrayed by Sony as we’re not able to get some of the extra features the Slim may get. We expected, upon purchasing the PSP, that Sony would continue to rennovate our FWs, but now they are just spending extra time working on PSPSlim and less on ours. Basically it’ll take twice as long for a PSPFat FW to be released, as two versions must be made, and the PSPFat FW will be inferior to the slims. Way to go Sony, you expected 32 MB to be sufficient for the PSP? Of course it wasn’t, you should have started off with 64 MB… and now that you’ve figured that out your leaving us old PSP owner’s with limited FW, rather than working on freeing up space in the current FWs… you could start with, say, removing LocationFree Player from flash and just having it as a downloadable file to run from the memory stick. Meh that’s my rant for the day ;0

Comment by SIXAXIS
2007-09-14 16:53:36

I like the idea of removing the LocationFree Player to the Memory Stick. That way, the flash space isn’t used up and the small percentage of people who have LFP can just download an app for it.

No cause either way on the fat or slim, a proper Pandora’s battery should solve a brick.

Pandora’s Battery works via a Hardware Interupt and cannot be blocked unless a new PSP MoBo comes out. The Battery itself works fine on the Slim they only managed to block the 1.5 IPL which renders the current Magic Memory Sticks useless (and the 1.5 Kernel). But as Team M33 has already proven the Magic Memory Stick can be altered to work again. Maybe we will see a completly redisigned PSP ultra Slim next year without a Service Mode at all. Only time will tell

Faith in sonys ability to maintain and nurture a portable system will be trashed if they decide to release another psp hardware revision.

Carts are the best media for portables. They are harder to pirate, and there are no load times.

Dont make the same mistake with UMD again sony.

Comment by PSP
2007-09-13 20:35:35

No, they are easier to pirate… that statement was pure ignorance. As for load times, if you prefer 8-bit graphics over the PSP’s then go ahead and play w/ some cart games. (graphic’s aren’t the only thing, more space also equates to more content.)

Comment by n64 fanboy
2007-09-14 13:01:41

You need a flash cart for NDS pirate games. Whereas the psp requires a mem stick and poorly protected firmware.

Which is easier to obtain at a Wal Mart?

Also, 8bit graphics? Thats just ignorance. Ever heard of the n64? Also, Nintendo was considering using cartridges for the Gamecube, and early dev kits allowed for carts to be used (early rogue squadron videos confirm this in the extras menu).

In this day in age a cart can hold up to 16gigs which is more than than the xbox 360 dvds…

Comment by mike
2007-09-14 14:05:06

Do you have any idea what your saying? How much would a cart that holds 16gigs cost to make, opposed to a sony blue ray disc that can hold 50Gigs? As for your N64 your way outdated… PS2 and PS3 and xbox all chose the disc format because its cheaper to produce and hold more then the outdated carts! Also, ever heard of Roms? Yes they are working on a N64 emulator so your carts will soon be replaced with roms, LOL!

Wow! 16GB carts. I don’t know about you, but I won’t pay $120 for a PSP/DS/N64/Nintendo/Sony game. That’s way overpriced.

And no Tv-Out cable is even sent anywhere according to $ony Customer service REP who knew nothing about PSP Slim at all that i asked, and they read a bunch of stuff off a paper exact words..”IR is removed in the Psp slim” and they didnt know what IR meant …(Infared)..
And The CSR had no clue when the Tv-out cables would be Hitting the market.. Im just steemed that they didnt come with the console. however it did come with a game, a 1gig card, and family guy episodes haha X-D

Was anyone else expecting to get the Cables?

This is for all you noobs out there with the phat and slim questions.

The current firmware 3.71 is downloadable and works on ALL PSPs. Just make sure you download the right version from the website, but to make sure there are no errors, do a System Update.

The Pandora’s Battery is reported to work on ALL PSPs up to 3.71. Sony cannot stop this from working unless they do something to the structure of the firmware or they put newer motherboards in the PSPs or they start selling newer batteries.

you wouldn’t be able to make the battery anyways unless you know someone who has a psp capable of running homebrew.

But, if you do, you can restore your battery to a normal one after the process is completed.
