PSP Slim & Lite Disassembled

greg | August 31, 2007

I’m excited to see what becomes of Sony’s new Slim PSP… Already, spread across several pages, are a series of photos illustrating the disassembly process. Now answer me this, how long before it’s fully hackable? ;)

yea this new psp is just like the original except slimmer. theres nothing new about it. but the little kids that want one of these dont see that. they just see a more smaller deferent looking device. i mean seriously if your going to spen 200 dollars on the same system then your a dumbass. i mean keep those 200 dollars save up just a little bit more and get an xbox360 or a wii or a ps3 well for a ps3 u would need to save up a lot more but whatever lol. dont be a moron by spending another 200 dollars on the same system that u already have.

oh so now they can make bigger games incompatible with the current model… so that’s their method of locking out the homebrew community… well, if Sony starts making games we can’t play w/ our 32meg ram, then I say F sony, ’cause I’m never buying a PSP Slim… I’ll just move on to another company (maybe someday nintendo will make a handheld w/ good graphics and multimedia capabilities?)

and besides that at least the psp will be unique since every body is like “oh no, my broke assed wallet, i’ll have to eat from trash for a year to think about affording it”

guys after the comment that i left up there all mostly all comments below it are dumb as fuck. look there arent that many good features in this new psp to go out and spend the same amount that u spent on the original one. ok look at it this way. me and some other guy have the original psp. then the psp slim is out and we both have 200 dollars. ok so i decide to keep those 200 dollars and the other guys goes and spends those 200 dollars on the psp slim. well a month later i have enough money to buy an xbox360 core system. and guess what game i buy……halo3. so now i have a psp and an xbox360 with halo3. while the other guy has an original psp and a slim psp wich doesnt even have that many new functions. ok so the other guy is still playing the same old psp games while i still have my old psp games and on top of that i have an xbox360 and halo3 so woohooo. dont be a dumbass if u have enough cash to buy a slim u almost have enough cash for an xbox 360 or wii whatever system u want it doesnt matter im just trying to prove a point that if u buy a slim when u already have an original psp that your just wasting your money so dont be a dumbass save taht cash and buy something else other then a psp.

old psps don’t have tv out function like the slim one i would sell the psp that i have on regular firmware to get one and keep my homebrew psp. but after the mobo is patched on the new one and it is homebrew ready then i’ll trade in the homebrew one.

Having TV output defies the whole reason of a PSP… Playstation PORTABLE… Unless you wanna carry some big ass 42 inch TV with you everywhere, then the PSP2 isn’t reallt worth it.

btw, Flash memory is different from RAM. RAM wouldn’t hold FW because it would be erased everytime the PSP hard reboots.

come on…. The tv makes the PDP into a portable hi-def powerhouse… The screen is still portable but the output let’s u share the game with everyone… Its the only feature the Psp ever needed. Its a portable web browsing, music playing video gadget of the future.so stop whining

Look people, the new PSP is just a regular PSP, reduced by a total (weight + width) of 32%, added a TV out, moved a few things around and 2 x the original PSP’s flash memory, THAT’S WHAT IT IS!

I will definitely get one when the right price come and the homebrew community succeeding to downgrade it. Does anyone know how this will effect Daedalus 64 emu?

Comment by n64 fanboy
2007-08-31 15:14:25

N64 emulation will be greatly improved with the increase from 32mb to 64mb of ram. N64 emulation is really tough to dev. Rouge Squadron is still not emulated, even on high end pcs.

I would expect that with increased ram, the n64 emulator could reach about the same speed as the n64 emu on the xbox. The xbox only has 64mb of ram. So that means around 25-30 fps on really high end roms, and 60fps on low end roms like 2d games and low detail 3d games.

I hear r13 n64 emulator is going to have a huge speedboost though, so just wait a while longer and the phat psp will reach more standable levels of emulation.

Comment by bozza

and also the motherboard is rev 1 … so if they make a security change in the motherboard you wont be affected in the future :)
ALSO if you are waiting for homebrewf for pspslim i recommend you buy the psp as soon as its announced that it has been hacked. Sony will make an update straight after it (but it takes some time to ship out to the stores)

I’m getting one too, PSP-2000 (Fixed @ 333Mhz, 64MB RAM, TV-Out, Lighter, Power Efficient) some of my games here will benefit from this slight upgrade, instead capping my speed settings to 333Mhz in the Recovery menu which drain the battery fast. I’ll buy one even it’s not hackable, I still have my used UMD’s. AfterBurner - Black Falcon speeds from 20-45 fps to 30-60 fps @ 333Mhz plus no lag in the in game music. I’ll even enjoy this on my TV even @ 480×272 resolution. ;)

if the motherboard is different wouldn’t that mean that if the psp slim is 3.60 firmware that could be like it first firmware , like the first psp when it came out it had 1.00 it was not possible to go lower(even do there no reason for it)what i trying to say is that wouldn’t 3.60 be it first and it will continue from there. because some people are saying that if they can use the pandora’s battery to downgrade the psp slim but what if the new psp is not using 1.50 and it just using 3.60. i am not saying it not possible to downgrade it they me be another way to do it or i may be wrong too it just my opinion so don’t curse me out cause you thing i am wrong

I have been deciding now for the past month, whether or not I should get an old PSP from Asia or (other place), or get the new slim psp. I have a pretty good collection of psp games, 27, which I usualy buy on Amazon, although I have bought a few “must have games” at the local store new. The emulation for SNES and Gameboy is wonderful, and I use that a lot. It makes sense to me, being a computer programmer (not psp programmer) that the hardware being different in the thin version, may not support 1.5 or any of the current customs. Afterall, the reason why Windows XP and VISTA are so large, isnt the programs themselfs, its all the little drivers incorperated with them. Anybody from the old Dos and Windows 3.1/95 era can attest not all hardware worked with the software provided by Microsoft. Sony could “eliminate” primary functions which would make 1.5 inopperable, or at least create some software conflicts. Alright, I’m a nerd… but I do believe Sony has something up their sleeve to stop homebrew, at least innitaly. So I have decided not even to wait for the pandora battery or any downgrader to be confirmed, i’m going to get a Cool color old psp… Blue or mabye even Gold. They are in short supply…. I can always pick up a slim psp 2 years from now.

Comment by Zen

the reason will be for one…the battery is different. Not the same size. Probably won’t have the same hook for unbricking in the hardware. (Too bad the pandora’s battery was leaked pre-psp slim…but it was a necessary to prevent people from cashing in on the unbricker.)

Nobody has mentioned the big difference-They removed the I.R. sensor!!!!!That’s no good for IR Shell, that’s one of my favorite apps. TV out is capable already, but with an adapter. Don’t get me wrong, I just want one because they are new and I’m curious. No IR…That’s the only problem I have with it, I’m positive it will be hacked in a matter of time.

Comment by Khast
2007-09-01 03:51:25

I don’t think they removed the IR because of hacking…but if I recall correctly like none of about all the games actually use the IR. So other than the homebrew, it is kind of useless. No offense.

99.9% of the games just transfer data via the Wi-Fi.

Comment by SomeOldGuy
2007-09-01 11:44:40

Sony never used it for anything as far as I know, but we as a homebrew community have made great use of the IR sensor with IR Shell. Everybody’s ok with that? I must be getting old

2007-08-31 23:22:31

Now this isn’t my area of expertise, I’m more of a hardware modder than a program rewriter, but couldn’t someone just make a program that bypasses the security, mimicks it if it must, and make it homebrew capable. It may not work exactly like that, not sure how it should, just something that rewrites the motherboard a bit and copies the RAM just with a tiny change in the Kernel to make it 1.50 and 3.60 and above capable. Just a thought…

Comment by drmoo
2007-09-01 01:10:56

Since when has there not been an exploit found? It may take a while, but there will be one. The reason Sony’s pushing out the PSP Slim and PSP Light is because it cannot be soft-modded as of today. And fanjita should NOT have left the PSP hacking community. All the cool people already left. We’re going to need his help for exploit searching and downgrading on these new PSPs.
