Pandora’s Battery - Universal PSP Unbricker

Alias420 | August 22, 2007

Right after we posted about Fanjita’s upcoming PSP unbricker for those that bricked their PSP with a bad copy of the M33 custom firmware, Fanjita and his crew upped the ante releasing a program that UNBRICKS ALL SONY PSPs. Wow a strong kudos goes out for this one. No longer will we need to ship bricked PSP’s off to Sony to have them fixed for a cost.

We told you that we’d be releasing an unbricker for the M33 bricks. But then we got to thinking, maybe that just wouldn’t be exciting enough.

Would you like a super special surprise bonus? How about an unbricker for ALL PSPs? Yep, you read that right. We call it “Pandora’s Battery”.

There’s a larger story behind this unbricker, though, and it deserves to be told. It’s the culmination of years of behind-the-scenes research and development by some of the top names in PSP hacking, under the name of the Prometheus project. This group of people, from various development teams, was dedicated to developing and releasing PSP hacks and exploits, with the aim of improving the status of PSP homebrew, and making sure that it was kept alive.

As always you can grab this file from our psp downloads area or by clicking here. For all the details from Fanjita check this out

This works! I unbricked a psp.

I even updated to the official 3.52 and used the unbricker to downgrade it to 1.50!

This is the best thing ever released, excellent work.

I unbricked from fw 3.40oe.

After I unbricked I updated to the official 3.52 fw,

then I used the pandoras battery to dg to 1.50.

works fine as both dg and unbricker.

I’d kinda guess you could use it like that, but i’m not sure as i’ve not had any problems w/ any of that, but i was just thinking that myself….so if someone had a 3.51 could upgrade to 3.52 and in the middle of it purposefully brick it….in theory i think it sounds alright, but i’d rather hear it for sure from the Prometheus project……

To all readers, even undercover Sony eyes to stop homebrew: If the computer market, the handheld market, all markets combined with information services never restricted free information to be passed, there would never be this opposing force.
Look at how Linux and the Free Software Foundation came into existence. If there ISNT going to be a comprimise between two groups, there will always, as studied in government class, be a split, a rebellion, because the other party was never willing to open out to new and unique ideas.
Open Sourceware isnt bad. Homebrew isnt bad. We will continue to unbrick and service our own PSPs because you’re not willing to support our partty and they will always exist no matter what you do. The only thing that can be done is what is right - for a comprimise.
WIll you do that Sony? Or will we just buy third party hardware and use homebrew apps that allow us to use it with our TV, or remotely with our PC, or even making the music plugin to where i can listen to music while playing your UMD games.
Its your choice. We will just continue to tred in the footsteps of opensourceware… for the PSP.
God bless you all.

2007-08-22 23:18:52

ok. i typed mspformat.exe i:, where i: is my memory stick, then i get the message “Usage: mspformat.exe driveletter.” I don’t think it formatted my mspd. I’m using Vista btw. I tried running it as an administator, and setting the compatibility to XP service pk2.

Comment by mspformat
2007-08-23 01:01:40

so i moved the mspformat.exe to the root of my c: drive and tried it again. At the C:\> prompt, I typed mspformat k (where k is my MSPD). This time i get an open error message. I tried using both my Sony 1GB MSPD and my Sandisk 2GB MSPD. Any ideas?

Comment by mspformat
2007-08-23 05:01:03

I got it to work using XP. I was using Vista earlier, maybe that’s why it didn’t work. Anyways, I used the same steps as my earlier comment above. Move the mspformat.exe to the root of c:..etc. Don’t add a colon at the end of the drive letter. So type out “mspformat x” instead of “mspformat x:”, without the quotes and where x is your drive letter. Another thing that I did differently was using a different card reader. That may or may not have been one of the problems for the open error message. This was all done on a Sony 1GB MSPD. Hope this helps!

ok i can confirm it works.. i just unbricked my psp.. for those who need help:

goto dos prompt and use the following commands
xp users.. start menu, run, and type in cmd
vista users.. start menu, dos/command prompt
then it should bring u to your user directory

to format:
mspformat X where “X” is the drive of your psp

for msinstall (put msinst.exe file in your root directory of ur newly formated MS)

from dosprompt type msinst X msipl.bin

AND UR DONE FROM THERE

i was also able to change my battery back to regular mode. simply start ur psp with the power adapter and no battery in.. once its starts in xmb place battery in and then run the battery eboot.. i picked [] option and voila back to regular battery

i hope this helps

You can try with a PC memory card reader. I think they’re compatible… Ask your friends if they have one, or just stop by a small-business electronics store (or computer store) that has a PC with such a device, and kindly ask them to format it.

Maybe give them a little something… Like, I donno, ca$h ?

the spare battery u made into the magic battery.. once u unbricked the psp to get it back into a regular battery simply take it out of ur psp (the battery) and plug in your adapter. start the psp, it will turn on and go into your xmb menu.. then pop your battery back into it and then go to the battery installer eboot and then select square [] to set your battery back to normal.. it works for me

First copy both files to the root of your C drive, then open the command prompt for mspformat type “mspformat.exe “X” where X is the letter of your memory stick then for msinst type “msinst.exe “X” msipl.bin” where x is the letter of your memory stick.

OK, something that noone is doing (or atleast saying) to get the msinst part done.

COPY THE MSIPL.BIN file to the local drive, then run msinst.exe. here, follow these steps from a dos prompt

c:\pandora\msinst> copy W:\msipl.bin
c:\pandora\msinst> msinst W msipl.bin

Assuming you follow all the earlier steps, this will properly create the boot partition on the media stick.

Comment by Sylar

The readme.tx talks about the 1.50 image installed in the Memory Stick for the debricking process (The one you make in the MS with the EXE file). After the debricking, the 1.50 Firmware of the PSP is a FULL WORKING FIRMWARE, remember that you copied the 1.50 EBOOT installer in the MS renamed to UPDATE.PBP.

Comment by DSpider
2007-08-23 04:38:43

Yes. This is basically an UNIVERSAL UNBRICKER / UNIVERSAL DOWNGRADER !

This shit is revolutionary ! No longer will we need GTA:LCS or Lemmings for downgrading. This is the shit indeeeed. Think of the new Slim PSP… It can be downgraded BEFORE it even comes out ! At least I think so… because the batteries are compatible.

Now people will have to post new tutorials on how to brick and downgrade the PSP. Even on youtube, why not.

Comment by Corvillus
2007-08-23 04:47:37

You probably will not need to brick the PSP first because the whole point of this is that it boots off the memory stick instead of the motherboard’s firmware (which is why it works on bricked PSP’s in the first place…since they basically have no working firmware).

i believe when you flash the battery, you can turn it back to a normal batter afterwards. Just start the psp with the ac cable, the put in the battery, and restart the battery eboot.

“universal PSP unbricker/downgrader” There is no need to brick your PSP on purpose to do this. As other ppl have stated. “The psp runs off the battery/mem stick” NOT the PSP’s flash drive. How ever, You do need another PSP that is “A PSP with a Custom Firmware such as OE, M33 or WC, or a PSP with the 1.5 original kernel.” to get your needed hardware /software.

There IS a way. You will be prompted to do a backup of the files on the battery’s flash (or whatever), but… WHY ?

Why would you turn the battery back to normal ? Why not KEEP IT in case you fuck something up while updating to a new custom firmware or stuff like that ?

Or what if you encounter a future bricker virus (?) from a downloaded ISO or homebrew and get another perma-brick ? What then ? Go through the same shit again ? C’mon… Just by a 256 MB Pro Duo memory stick (10-15 USD) and a new battery. Keep the new battery (because it’s new) and load the memory stick with what you need JUST IN CASE YOU’LL NEED IT AGAIN.

Did someone try it with a 128 MB Pro Duo ? The readme says 256 MB should be fine.

how do i go around downgrading this?
does my psp actully have to b bricked n i thts the case how can tht work if i cnt get homebrew on it to even brick it in the first place,

other thing it says

REQUIREMENTS
- A spare PSP Battery. Any make will do. Using a spare is best, as it
will not be possible to boot the PSP in its normal state with the
modified battery.
- A spare Memory Stick Pro Duo of less than 4Gb. (256Mb should be
enough for all applications).
- A PSP with a Custom Firmware such as OE, M33 or WC, or a PSP with
the 1.5 original kernel.

does this mean u have to have a spare memory card aswell as a battery wb thnx in advance

Comment by some guy

u do not need to brick your psp in order to downgrade. You will need a spare battery for the psp you plan on downgrading. You will need a memory stick for the psp you plan on downgrading. You will need a homebrew capable psp to prepare the memory stick and battery for the psp you wish to downgrade

I had a little trouble with the readme file contained with the pandora.zip so

here’s where I got stuck.

Go to START menu, click Run, type Cmd
This will open a command window.

Let’s say your PSP drive letter is x and that the mspformat.exe file is located on

the root of your c drive.

*** Be sure to have the USB connection on! ***

To format your PSP memory card with mspformat you would type…

c:\mspformat x

————–

Let’s say the msinst.exe file is located on the root of your c drive.

*** Be sure to have the USB connection on! ***

To create the bootfile on your memory card you would type…

c:\msinst.exe x msipl.bin

When I press O, the system resets, and goes right back to the blue “press O” screen. Is anyone else having the same problem? Was it unable to write the system.dreg file for anyone else?

That my PSP shows ANYTHING after being bricked for over a month goes to show the genius of this development. Thank you, thank you, thank you, every member of the Prometheus Project.

http://www.rafb.net/p/2vEinP16.html

only thing you will need is the official 1.50 eboot.pbp, use google!!!

now i have to show my friend around the wonderfull world of homebrew.

Tnx team, forgot the name, for this great app.

i havent got a psp, my bro has though, he just showed me this earlier. i am surprised a battery can do this as batteries dont usually have any built in memory function, it must be an object built in the battery which means you could make a self contained unbricker device and then you would probably be able to use the current battery, but hey, i dont know anything about psps, just a thought

Unless you want your PSP to explode, which has been documented at least once, by all means, go ahead and buy this aftermarket garbage.

I like to state that you can still use your “MODDED JIGKICK” battery normally without the need to restore it.

How?

Simply power on your psp with the power cable first, than after your at the XMB, put your battery In, and it will work just fine.

As long as there is no “HARDWARE REBOOT” you should be fine. “Putting the PSP to sleep mode will not make it mess up”

Of course: YOU CAN’T power on the PSP with the battery cause that will trigger the recovery.

Is it possible to use the Pandora Battery more than once, and reload the battery?

Are there Unix programms equal to the two’s in the download?

I’m confused:
Is it now possible to Downgrade any FW?
or just the bricked ones?

i believe that there was already a unbriker but they did not want to release it just yet. but because all the bricked psp they were Compelled to release it. i know they were keeping it for themselfs to prevent sony from stopping it. thats why there were some videos of people using it months before this recent release.

For those of you who are having some problems with that msipl file..
I was having them problem to and did this.
I just formated the memory card in windows xp. Right click select format.
Example psp drive is (f:)
Then copy MSPFORMAT.exe to the root of your computer drive (c:).
In command prompt, type mspformat f: (enter) then Y (enter) If something happens good, if not keep moving. One of my memory cards didn’t need it, one did. Just keep hitting yes or ok.
Then start the installation process to get the required files on your memory card as in the readme.txt. Once done copy the msinst.exe to the psp root (f:) then here ya go…
f:\msinst f msipl.bin

That’s what I did after trying all them other ways and it worked like a charm!

For those of you just looking to downgrade your Psp from whatever FW, I have sofar downgrade from official $ony FW’s 3.52, 2.0, 3.03, 2.81 and some others with no problems. Only thing when I went to update to 3.52 M-33 it took forever to write the 3.52 files when I ran the M-33 Creator.
Good luck guys!
