Redesigned PSP! Coming in September!

greg | July 11, 2007

Just saw this on IGN; one of the more interesting topics concerning the PlayStation Portable… Kaz Hirai has announced a new re-designed PSP available in September –

11:48: Kaz announces new PSP. 19% slimmer, 33% lighter, battery life longer, and expanded video capabilities. Available in September.

11:49: Hirai pulls up video of Spider-Man 2 on his PSP, presses a button, and the video suddenly appears on giant screen behind him. Part of the “display” function. Says that you can do the same thing with games, photos, and whatever else is on your PSP. New PSP will also allow you access PS3 and PC hard drives from anywhere in the world thanks to new connectivity options.

Intriguing! Will it prove more secure?!

very good idea, highly expected since the PS2 slimline and redesigned PS1. However, i cant wait to see how much different this is and also the smaller size may not be that good if you like to “know” and able to hold the PSP.

Why cant they do this at the start, itd be good, not original, but good that way people could decide if they wanted a smaller one. The longer battery life should be made to original PSP owners at a cheap price compared to the £20 batteries available here.

“a hard drive is bigger than a psp”

yea, a computer hard drive is… Ipod’s have small hard drives as well as other portable media devices.
I’m sure they could make a small one to fit in a psp.
if they can make it smaller, I’d rather have about the same size with better battery, hard drive and games that utilize the processor full speed.

Comment by xflame

yah it could have a hard drive

Comment by ITSA ME!
2007-07-14 02:44:24

If they are gonna add memory, odds are it is a separate flash chip containing accesible memory (mostlikely VIA USB). I think i remember someone saying that it had more battery life… hard drives have moving parts causing more energy wasted, where as a flash memory chip is enerygy efficient. Plus, Flash memory is much lighter, smaller, and cheaper.

so based on all of this, i think its safe to say its not a hard drive.

Wow. way to copy the Nintendo series. Nintendo keeps updating the same system over and over, like the Game Boy Advance series, and now the Nintendo DS series. but they do it cuz they are improving on the problems the previous system had. this sounds like a PSP2 rather than a improved PSP. but whatever, even with that stuff, think about how practical it would be to buy if you have the original PSP already. not worth it in my eyes, unless you don’t have a PSP yet. i’ll continue to play every super Nintendo and Sega genn. games ever made for my PSP, thanks.

I, for one, hope that it is Hack-proof.
The new PSP being secure would encourage actual developers to create more games for the system without the worry of the rampant piracy that hombrew/custom firmware has brought. You guys complain constantly and tell Sony to give up but this is why they have to make sure that it’s secure, not for you, for them, but for the game company’s themselves.
That being said, having the old PSP still hacked and the new one being secure, one could expect the best of both worlds with homebrew and new games on the old one.

2007-07-12 03:13:20

The current hackability of the firmware has not stopped developers coming out with games like ratchet and clank, god of war, and all those hundreds of titles announced during that conference!

Comment by Reverend
2007-07-12 04:43:08

Those are both first party games. Of course Sony will develop games for their own system no matter what. Think before you write.

Comment by growl
2007-07-12 12:50:55

You said it would encourage actual developers to create more games, you did not say whether they were first or third party developers. But since you insist:

Lumines (Bandai)
GTA:LCS (Rockstar)
MGS (Konami)
Burnout (EA)
Ridge Racer (Namco)
PES (Konami)
Football Manager (Sega)
Final Fantasy (Square)

Are all third party games, and there are plenty more to come. I recall an interview where either the Daxter or Ratchet and Clank developers actually went to SCEA to solicit to develop that franchise on the psp, so I don’t think hackability was in their plans.

Also, hackability of Xbox, PS2 and DS have NOT STOPPED developers developing for those platforms.

In any event, first or 3rd party developers are irrelevant, if the lineup is strong.

I can’t wait to get another PSP. I’m gonna go part out at the store right now. Where’s my camping gear @. Damn dog pee’d on the sleeping bag. Guess I’ll have to freeze.

SONY, What a let down. Where’s all the shit that was suppose to be made and released for the one that was already released.

Seems funny how they can sit there and bitch about losing sales and revenue. but, They can go out and make new hardware. If I wasn’t so into Playstation, I’d sell my PS1, PS2, PSP. I sure and the hell aint gonna go out and buy a PS3. Specially for $600/$500.

I think Sony is one back assworded Company. They say one thing and do another. Here’s what you can look forward for and but hey, You aint gonna get it cause We’re just telling you that so you’ll buy one.

I was hoping for a more stylish one (p.s. they got pics of it on other sites). It looks no different, the mockups looked better. They should have intergrated memory and advertised it as an”hd” mobile media player. Contest the ipod and the zune with its huge screen. Also, they should have intergrated the mic and camera. Then they could have advertised it as a great video and picture camera. Along with good advertising they could have sold me on buying a new one. There is no reason to buy this new psp. Barley anything surprising besides it “slimness” which isn’t a big hardware advancement. The only way they are going to sell these things if they have the current psps dirt cheap ($99?) and have the slim take over the original price ($125). Imagine, if they were able to have built in memory around the 100gbs they could really kick off the psp as a media player, they have the technology but they insist on keeping the memory stick (another sony format that isn’t a success).

Comment by Marc Mozz
2007-07-15 14:08:17

good point, however, there would be no possible way it could be so cheap. and they’d have to call it the PSP2 or the PSPX, and as for the internal memory with that gaming tech in there already, you’ve just bumped the price up to at least $250-$300. but if they changed it into a straight media player and not a gaming PSP, that would keep the price low, however, it would make it’s only real advantage the big screen. but if they could make it play AVI videos, it’d be the number one bought PSP-M????? over the iPod and the Zune. nice idea you had :)

I can’t comment on the PSP-lite internal functions and hackability.

But based on the engadget pictures there seems to be minor improvements on the exterior like the relocated earphone-remote plug and speaker hole and smoothed out the edges that cause a bit abrasion on my current PSP.
But it’s no PSP2 as it still got that horrible UMD drive!

Unless it’s hacker/homebrew friendly and gets rid of the terrible UMD drive, and maybe replaces the UMD drive with a second battery compartment and accept SD cards(will never happen);…
… until Sony actually improves the PSP then I willn’t even think one bit of getting a PSP-2/lite.

Improvement of the Playstation Store would really help, content is alot safer on my hard drives and MemorySticks than on flimsy UMDs.

With the falling prices of SSD technology like SanDisk pushing around $10 per GB, I can’t be bother to be ripped off by Sony to buy UMDs.

Sony is really not helping the PSP with is current look or style hey are sticking with. It is a update to the last PSP not a PSP2 like some think it is. All they did really was upgrade small features and smooth it out. I thought they would at least answer the call of their customers by adding another analog stick and really making it thinner with the camera and mic and so forth as already mentioned. $200 isnt a bad price for it but damn make that shit more attractive then the current version we have. Not leave it be and just do some lazy ass minor work. Dont get me wrong I love my PSP but if your gonna make a upgrade or improve something make it more attractive and add what the customer wants.

ok first of all, this was old news. This has been talked about for a long while now (I’m talking 4months ago or so), all they did was confirm it’s existence. Also as for homebrew, well I don’t think I’d buy it until an exploit is found. I’m more worried on how this will impact the homebrew comunity. PSP hacking will now have a new set of rules one for the old PSP and the new one. This will confuse many noobs and not to mention make things a little harder for the old PSP users to continue enjoying homebrew… I guess what I’m trying to say is, this kinda sux for us, yet I really do like the new model… I just wish I were rich so I can afford both >_>

i probably wont bother with this thing unless some PS3 hacks start happening soon. My guess is the PSP was kind of like a prototype for the PS3 as a bigger design, and they learned from the security flaws found in the PSP’s release when they designed it. Now after it’s been out about a year with no real homebrew, they have decided to go back and apply that design to become a replacement for the PSP so they could move forward without enabling the homebrew scene any further. It’s probably going to be the same as the PS3- encrypted internal memory, isolated DRM subsystem, etc.
