PSP Firmware 3.51 Released!

greg | June 29, 2007

That didn’t take Sony long… Here’s their response to the PSP 3.50 firmware downgrader. Rest assure this update fully patches the recent Illuminati vulnerability discovered by team Noobz.

3.51 is available via Network Update; I pulled down the version you see below just now (in North America).

BE WARNED! If you choose to upgrade, you will lose all homebrew compatibility and the ability to downgrade.

Download: 3.51 FW Update

The battle continues!

why would he? this new fw is probably only focused on fixing the exploit, not on bringin’ us new fantastic features.

Comment by Gargantula

No, no new features this is the only one.

New for 3.51: A security patch was added to address security vulnerabilities in the system software.

It is not a security vulnerability that I mind at all.

Yeah, time and money that should be making the PSP better (more fun), but no, they try to kill off the only people who DO make the PSP a great handheld. Sony is fucking stupid. They practically don’t even sell their own product! Hackers are selling the PSP now.

Longlive PSP hacking!
and lets hope Sony grows some brains!

Sony= The dumbest of all chinese companies.

How come they dont just straight up unlock the fuckin psp, forget about the stupid fuckin security patches and save some money. Sure the game developers will be pissed since this could allow their games to be pirated. But so what! Who gives a fuck..the psp only has like 3 game developers making games for it any ways..and most of them get old…fast..so fuck it..bring on some features..fuck the security shit…and stop being a bunch of cheap basterds.

Im guessing they have nothing else to do at Sony though regarding the psp. They’ve run out of features to add since they’re so stupid so now they’re pumping all their funds into patching security holes..maybe they should go back to farming rice..thats all their fuckin good for

You are like an only one who finally got it here – THEY’RE JUST ACTING LIKE THEY ARE – thats exactly what is going on here. They can’t afford to make PSP homebrew proof, PSP will not sell any more, because there is not one “must have, must play” piece of game on it. Hacks maked it attractive. And also they can’t survive the legal battle disaster if they ignore that whole fact and not cover their asses with an security patch. They are HAPPY with this website as they are superhappy with the whole aura of hackability surrounding their product. It was their plan from the begining to make it possible and than capitalize on it. Can’t anyone see what is happening? And please – DO NOT WRITE COMMENTS LIKE: F..K SONY, it is like you do not understand without Sony there will be no PSP at all. It’s not like they are doing any harm to us with their updates – so grow up people and apreciate them a bit. Or you want them to go out of business? What would we do after that? Get some chinese PSP knockoff console with tetris on it? C’mon guys, why so much hate?

Not never, but until they add some nice new function or feature in their future fw. Than people will be motivated to find out the way to get that in their hacked PSPs and thats a start on a path to the downgrader. So far there is no reason for anybody to be loosing his time with this temporary hotfix. I thing we all understand 4.0 is near. Sony will tie up some bomb game title in to it, like when they did make first GTA 2.0 only and lots of people upgraded just to be able to play their game. I hope it will be some kind of MMOG based on one of their existing licensed title.

Ask somebody in any metropolitan area on this planet where they have their store. Than go there and ask for the manager. Give him the IP address you have been sending this message from and you Will receive special DISSCOUNT.

My toothbrush is from Phillips, but if SONY makes one, I will get it the same day it makes the stores) are as smart as dogs bitting the hand that feeds them. Battle over PSP is only in your heads guys, if SONY stop providing you with an legal cover by their security updates, soon you might get your devices taken away by cops when they make it illegal to use. Please don’t be such a Dick about it. How would you like to be f++ked by SONY and in your case right in one of your magic eye?

So when im downgrading it says:

“7 – Unzip the 1.50 update to a temporary folder. Rename the EBOOT.PBP to
UPDATE.PBP and copy it to :/PSP/GAME/UPDATE/ . DO NOT
OVERWRITE PSP/GAME/UPDATE/EBOOT.PBP!”

I don’t have a folder called Update nor do I have a file called Eboot.

you’ve missed out a step then, it says you need to extract the ms_root folder contents from the downgrader archive you d/l on your mem stick, then you will have a psp\game\update\eboot.pbp, you then need to rename the 1.50 updatte you downloaded to update.pbp

Just a noob. I have been watching this site since I got my PSP originally. But I have noticed a few things about Sony.

They spend millions to copy protect CDs to have the protection defeated by a 49 cent marker.

They spend millions to protect the PSP, but their small think tank is no match for the thousands of hackers.

All I have to say is Thank you for the D_A and Noobz team’s “Black Marker” for the PSP. I have played my PSP more in the last 24 hours than I had in the entire previous year!!!! (Lumeins is a great game, but it now holds an even better rank in my books due to the exploit!)

Yes the hackers are winning right now at one time sony had firmware 2.60 which people never thought it could be hacked you notice no new firmware updates out for awhile untill the gta exploit. What sony should do is concentrate on new features rather then patches that prevent homebrew. However people shouldnt run illegal isos they don’t own thats all sony is trying to prevent

It’s sad really. You know every system since the Saturn and maybe even earlier has been hacked. But I’ve never seen a company go after it as much as Sony is with the PSP. I remember my friend and I 1 1/2 years ago, around PSP launch time, laughing at the DS. Who’s laughing now? I think Sony was expecting to take over the handheld market the way they did with the Playstation. But they can’t do that if software sales are in the toilet.

Comment by NoiseReducer
2007-07-01 00:23:14

You are right sir! But stinky software belongs to the toilet. PS1 won the race first because of the GAMES, than because of hacks and smart price strategy. I don’t thing SONY lost a penny with PS1. With PSP phase one is almost over, enjoy it while you can, it allways was just a teaser. Real thing will have 1080P display and 4GB RAM, it will make PSP1 look like an Gameboy. It will cost $999 first year and geeks all over the world will be storming the stores to get them. Price will drop to $749 after manufacturing gets stores filled. It will be in 2018. Specs of SONY PSP 3 prototype will leak to the public. It will have an revolutionary holographic display unit fitting the users room in daylight and a small parkinglot in dark. 200W minisubwoofer in the main unit plus disattachable wireless surround speaker system. Controlling device will be in form of ring on users finger. Geeks will… (I know guys, I should stop dreaming, but you never know, why they should not do it, I would buy thing like that for right price.)

On the other hand, in the past, in order to cheat the system, consoles needed modchips, something many people either didn’t know about or know how to install. With the PSP however, all you need is a memory stick and know where to download the software. The only other homebrew ready system I can remember is Dreamcast, and look at it now (It did have great games;)). That and the explosion of interest in games, I can see why Sony is so nervous.

Another lousy security patch firmware that adds no new features. They should stop releasing updates until they manage to think of a new useful feature (for example like being able navigate the Music folder like a proper MP3 player by Artist, Year, Album, Genre, etc), so that Ahman and crew can come out of retirement to work on a new IRShell.

I don’t hate Sony, I mean without them I wouldn’t have my PSP. If it wasn’t for DevHook, SE/OE and the openess of FW 1.50 I wouldn’t even bother spending money on a PSP. I still don’t get to make so much money which they waste on making rubbish like AIBO.
It’s their own fault for making UMDs that are so slow and terribly designed especially for a company that still manages to keep MiniDisc alive but what’s with the big unsealed hole for? Then they charge such ridiculous prices which you can get a PS3 BlueRay game for.

UMD is the PSP downfall, Sony screwed themselves over that one.

I think sony should spend more money developing bigger memory sticks and less money in crappy FW upgrades.

Ive ben thinkin why sony hates the hakers? these guys are just showing the world what the psp can realy do.what sony has to do is spent a some money in this guys or better give them a job in their company that way they can motivate and make even better homebrew. I just imagine purchasing a psp at a oficcial sony store and when I first turn it on it has 3.40 OE. That would be awesome.

They hate hackers because we can rip their UMD’s and throw them on the web, highly illegal and drops their sales dramatically. The third-party software made for it [homebrew] they could honestly care less about as it’s just games ppl have made [that capture attention]

yes yes fuck Sony and all that, but keep in mind that Sony don’t make money off selling PSPs, they make money selling game softwares. They care less about how many PSPs are sold. What the fuck do you think you would do if you have a company like that making PSP and everybody’s hacking the shit out of it so they can play pirated games?? People, use the hacked PSP to do some good, let Sony know our intention is to bring out the PSP’s protential not on pirated games. As much as we hate Sony in some way, but we don’t want to choke it to death till it ditches the PSP platform, then the ones are screwed will not be Sony but us, for losing the one of the best systems ever…

Shit, you know what, Sony’s probably not gonna realized that even if we stop pirating, they are just a bunch of big fucking dumb asses. Shit what has gotten in my mind…fuck! lol

Personally, I think Sony could easily enable homebrew, and stop piracy. Most of the Homebrew crowd isn’t into piracy, and if Sony were to say, disable Flash access, and UMD access, but leave the system open under “unsigned” code.

Nintendo tried to make anit-piracy protocols in their SNES, people wanted to cheat, so the Game Genie overrided their copy protection. If Nintendo and Galoob worked together, they could have had a better chance of closing the anti-piracy holes.

Sony could benefit in the same ways, work with their fanbase, allow the homebrew, but disable the things which leave the system open to piracy. (UMD access, and Flash Access) That way people aren’t working so hard against them, and they can emphasize more on what is important, game development.

another thing I see Sony could do, to prevent piracy, would be to make a custom language, just for the effect of homebrew, which gives full access to the system, but won’t allow patched versions of their “signed” code. Like making Windows running Java, have it capable of running software, but can block out the undesired features which may lead to piracy. Run ELF when on UMD, ELF “lite” when on memory stick.

[Rant]
People need to get this through their heads. Sony is a company. Companies like to make money. Doing so allows them to make things like the psp, which they sell for less than it cost to make. Thus incurring a loss. But then they can put other monies they have made, remember? they’re a company and they like doing that? into R & D and giving some of that money to people who like making games for a living. These so called kick ass games are then bought by the masses, for a profit to sony, so they get money back on each console made.

So can we just stow the fuck sony crap for a bit? Yes homebrew is great, and even tho technically it’s still considered piracy, that’s not the reason sony are plugging security holes, it’s because their millions of dollars invested in game companies are floating around free on the net. Not to mention per unit sales.

[/End rant]

Brilliant – no one can put it better.
note: I thing loose is still not involved in unit sale, it’s just a myth. UMDs are down, thats for sure, but units are selling good.

Oop, homebrew, i meant emulators lol, my point being they’re not going to be as worried about a 10-15 yr old game made by some other company for a completely different hardware. Diddly. Imma get fucked up today. Yeah!

No matter what is done by sony to stop exploits, downgraders, and hombrew, there will ALWAYS be some kick @$$ hacker like D_Ax who will find a hole in the system to exploit it.

—Long live the war on Sony!

We actually got three parties, if you look closely. We have the homebrwrewers who want to unlock potential and sony who would love to provide games but focuses too much time elsewhere right now…. then the third party who uses what homebrewers have already provided for illegal purposes.
As far as I am concerned, to be at war on Sony would be like saying “i hate my psp”.. shit. Want to just throw the hardware unit away? You purcahsed the PSP originally right (well i hope so!)? Those of us running OE and SE chose to “void the warranty” and took that risk, right?
I agree with “sony is just trying to protect their ass” because if they are all of a sudden wide open and not patching their firmware, game companies wont invest in them because they arent on top of it, their investments will decrease, next thing you know, NO GAMES will come out for the PSP, no more units will be made, and its all a dead loss – the psp is no longer hot.
So say whatever shit you want on Sony, but re-evaulate your position as an owner the PSP whether your a SONY FANBOY running Sony Firmware or Dark Alex’s Firmware. The only ones who think they are at war on Sony, my evaulation, is the large percentage who are “downloading umd backups” off the internet and playing CSO on their PSP.
If this website all of a sudden actually had a dedicated effort to have war on PIRACY (which would be a bitch to do now) and worked a bit more closer on end with Sony, maybe the bigger picture would be a hell lot different…. but- the big picutred is fucked up now so as far as Sony is concerned – we are all bad people hurting their sales, their UMD sales, the part that they make their money on to prove the PSP isnt dead yet.

*pretends to be surprised* OMG! Sony has released a security patch! Who could see that coming? Also, I agree with about 99% of the people posting here. why do sony try? the homebrew community has made the psp around 10,000 times better than it could have been if we just left sony to their own devices. Then again, those of you who say this, but also use “backups” on their custom firmware are possibly the people who make sony keep on patching the exploits, because they do so to save their asses from piracy. and running backups is piracy, got that? So, go outside, buy some fricking games, and I’ll like you again.

I can’t you guys are flaming Sony. What would you do if you were in sony position? Would you give up? let said you in a stand selling original game, while the stand next to you are giving away free game and they got it for free. Wouldn’t that pissed you off while you staying here getting no business and yes still have to pay your worker? seriously, what Sony do is a must to stop hacker, they need money to pay off worker and themself, otherwise they end up losing money. If this keep up, sony could give up making more game and quit the psp, same thing like Sega in the past. It not like Sony not giving you homebrew, i bet they can give more feature than all the hackers out there if they can, but they will get their ass sued. I love homebrew too, but there’s no need to flame Sony for stopping.
