PSP to Offer Voice & Video Calls

Here is something a lot of us have been anticipating — voice & video calls via the PSP hand held over a wireless Internet connection. Unfortunately the initial launch of the service will only be available for UK residents.
Using a soon-to be-released camera and microphone, gamers will be able to call other PSP owners and some BT phones.
The software has been developed by BT and will eventually allow PSP users to call PCs, fixed lines and mobiles.
Initially the service will only be available in the UK and will only work on home or BT wireless hotspots.
Currently, there are around 2,000 of these situated in airports, railway stations, hotels and fast food restaurants.
Some day it’ll make its way to North America, I’m sure… I hope…

Of course the don’t there freaking 12 year olds…wait my 12 yr old nephew Does have a cell phone. VOIP will not cost money… it will probably be a FW upgrade the checks for other PSP’s to use the service.

this is grat news! i wasnt around in the old days of phone phreaking, so with any luck this might be the rebirth of the phreak, the psp would be the perfect hardware to hack voip systems to make free calls :D i hope when this service goes live, someone makes a blue box app, its about time we all got to call each other for free. long live phreak power
Meh use the BT hotspots, i tryed to access one in teh shopping center in my town, but u need to b a member of BT broadband to use it , as it asks u to login Meh…..anyway whats the point? Y release it to only work at teh BT wireless hotspots , in The Chippys, Shopping Centers, pub’s,Hotels and probly retail parks… Not like your friends are always going to b aroud those places . Gud idea but next to useless untill it can b used on any wireless connection lol -.-” meh Like my Be* broadband XD

Hmm, I think it would be very cool if we could use this app through Ad-Hoc mode, as if you were in the same room as a friend..Better yet Sony needs to develop some sort of chatting program for ad-hoc similiar to PictoChat on the Ds..that would be the best add on to psp in ages. Also, what the hell is with all these things being released over seas and not in NOrth America!? The camera, this, Gps..etc..wtf? LIke make it available to the world you idiots or there wont be that many sales.

anyways. good start. eventually this software will allow VOIP on any network (custom firmware?)
it’s been years since i have used a normal phone. (in the UK practically all phones are VOIP). hence all the new boxes virgin and BT have been giving away. most of the people don’t even know they’re using VOIP.
and that is to answer all those people saying why they’re not testing it in the states, thats cos britain is already far ahead of other countries in VOIP. and with virgin media (previously NTL) testing the new 50mb connections (BTW very good results announced) it will only be a matter of time before everyone is using VOIP.

Skype was developed by the guys that gave us P2P software so don’t knock it. Plus it’s brought the world closer calling skype to skype for free, especially if you’ve got relatives that are a long way away and you can’t afford to call them every night.. My kids love talking to their nan in greece every night for free, or their uncle in new zealand once a week..
Who cares if it’s skype, voIP, it’s a great app that’ll come out and no doubt once it’s out the hackers will be able to improve, add and turn it into something completely worth while..
As for us brits, gotta love us, at least we’re getting something before the US first, after all we normally have to buy stuff on import first before we get it officially!!!
