RosettaShard Version .8.5 Released

greg | May 8, 2007

So y’all wanna learn a new language eh? Yhuck, yhuck…

Well, foebea’s RosettaShard will have you on the right path to bilingualism, or maybe even trilingualism for that matter! Better said than myself, here’s the description from the always important README.txt:

This application is compatible with the Rosetta Stone language sets without any conversion needed. Unfortunately it seems some of the audio files from Rosetta Stone are not perfect. They play fine on the PC, but the PSP audio libraries are not able to play some without distortion. Copy your Language Set lessons to the Language directory in the RosettaShard installation folder. If your Language Set has much distortion, it will need to be repaired. This will be done with a PC application which will be released as soon as it is completed. Until then, you can repair them yourself by the following:

  • Rename the files so the extension SWA becomes MP3.
  • Encode the files to MP3 at 22khz with a bitrate of 80kbits.
  • Rename the files so the extension MP3 becomes SWA.

What’s new in version .8.5?

  • The HOME button is fixed. It now brings up the HOME screen and works as normal.
  • In Choose Setup -> Available Card Sets: Only Units and Lessons which are present on the memory stick are available to select.
  • In Choose Setup -> Available Card Sets: Lesson Descriptions have been removed as they were not exceedingly useful. In fact the whole menu system has been replaced.
  • Skins have been removed for now. This will be a feature in a later version. Currently the Skin can only be changed by replacing the images themselves. The entire interface can be skinned this way.

Shortly after posting this I found proof of a memory allocation bug which may be causing the distortion. I don’t know the second thing about audio processing right now, but I will soon enough :)

I’m not sure what you mean by take it and edit it.
This is a program I have had in my head for a couple years, and just got around to programming just now. It wasn’t on advice that I made it, I just though it would be a great app to have, and since Rosetta Stone isn’t going to release a portable version (at least they wouldn’t tell me when I asked) I decided to write my own.

Or like Eric S. Raymond said (before he lost his mind), you scratched a very personal itch.

And to smokethis: actually, learning a language is one of the most interesting things you can do with your mind. Some of us take great pleasure in testing the limits of what we can do with our brains, and while I admit that high-school language teaching is teh gay, hopefully you’ll homeday taste the joy of learning a new language.

Is their any tutorial about how to get the language packs working on the program, its kinda vauge and ive been trying for like an hour to get them to work. This program is wonderfull, if you dont win the competition with this, someones gonna hear from me. lol. keep it up.

2007-05-08 19:33:59

Ack! I knew I forgot something. basically, you copy the folders over that you want, as they are. you need sound folders and image folders and then you have to copy over the TRS files (really at this point just CDID.TRS) and put it in the language directory, overwriting the one that is there right now. you have to make sure that your language that you want to working is on the first line of the CDID file as there is not currently multilanguage support. (for about a week).

There are a couple special cases where the original CDID file contains unicode chars (francais, espagnol, portuguese) if the language is one of those or if you still have problems loading the language please visit the Release Thread on this site which i monitor constantly by email. Give detail of what language and describe what you have tried and what happens, chances are I will know the cause right away and will reply with the solution. Hope this helps! (and sorry for the long comment) this is like the missing manual :)

i got the english pack to work, its great, every so often a sound will buzz a bit- but its great. I noticed a few things (not bashing your work).
1.The phrase that is being spoken in the upper right of the screen, if its to long it wont wrap to the next line, it just goes off the screen.
2 When trying to access the tutorial it gives you the option “NO” or “NO” (lol, its not that tuff).
3. this is great thanks

Comment by foebea
2007-05-08 20:47:52

Yep the buzzing is undetermined right now. It could be the audio file itself, or memory allocation. I’m working on it.

I have not yet put in wordwrap :) I figured native support of the language sets should come first.

There is no tutorial yet :D
The tutorial will be coded in this weekend before the contest ends.

Hmm, every time I try to start the program, it shows the contest splash screen, as well as the Rosetta Shard title screen, and then I get the blue “I regret to inform you but your PSP has just crashed.” Has anyone else had this problem?

It tells me that the offending routine may be identified with:
psp-addr2line -e target.elf -f -C 0×890424c 0×614b0320 0×890424
if that helps at all. I’d like to use it to supplement the classes I’m taking, and be able to use it on the PSP, but it won’t work (both firmware eboots).

Any suggestions? I’m on 3.40 OE.

Ah, I didn’t check the release thread. I’ll have to go with SWA/MP3 and JPGs… Argh, I’ll have to convert.

Comment by foebea
2007-05-08 20:51:31

That would not be the issue. It loads both SWA and MP3, and JPG and PNG with ease.

The difficulty is most likely in the CDID.TRS file.
Try deleting the first part of that line, for example, “Espa-ol I” and then typing it in manually. The psp doesn’t like unicode chars by default and thats whats holding it up.

If its “Francais I” I made a boo boo.
Replace that with “French I” :D

Nah, the Japanese set uses .PCT and .SND files. I’ll just have to wait.

Comment by foebea
2007-05-08 21:50:03

japanese does use SND files, but my list shows it as using JPG files. I guess they are interchangable in Rosetta Stone to some extent.

No worries though, I will find a way to get it to work. I will start on the PC program on Monday.

The filesystem on the psp memory stick says that the smallest amount of memory it will use at one time is…. (guessing) 4k. This means if a file is 1k worth of data, on this filesystem it will take up 4k of space. Sad, but true. Thankfully, 4gb memory sticks are about 60 bucks right now.

OK I’m trying to figure out how to install the Japanese I pack I have from the CD. Would I just copy the whole CD to the /languages/ folder (provided I have enough room on the mem stick)?

The Demo is great :)

Can I make a suggestion for the controls option for next version?
Card 1: UP
Card 2: TRIANGLE
Card 3: DOWN
Card 4: CROSS
I think the setup this way would more naturally match the layout of the screen.

Keep up the good work. :)

heheh thats actually the default controls and my favorite. i call it ‘classic controls’.
There is something to be said for the left handed and right handed controls though, especially if you are just lounging about, one handed idle control is nice i’ve found.

To install the Japanese pack, first make sure what kinds of files they are. If they are SND and JPG, then the audio will not play but the program will run. If they are SND and PCT, the program will not run :(

In either case, I would recommend spending a little bit of time (relatively) converting however many lessons you thing you might use over the next 2 weeks. convert SND to 44khz MP3, and convert PCT to JPG. (you could also convert to PNG, but those need to be 163×122 pixels, while the JPG will scale automagically within rosettashard. PNG will scale in the future, but not this version.)

I wouldnt really recommend copying over the whole CD until version 1.0 unless you have converted all the lessons. Otherwise you will have picture viewer bundled with a random noise generator :) It’s kinda fun, even knowing it could screech at me I still jump a bit at some of the frequencies coming out of the speakers. LOL. i’ve gotta fix that.

The same thing happens for greek. it goes to a blue screen and says the psp has crashed.

Comment by foebea
2007-05-09 15:12:31

I found something nifty that could be the cause of these bluescreens. Some languages have (in the default settings i found) 2 different directory types for images, so i split them out. for example the first half of the units may use PCT and the rest would use PCN. So if you are getting this error, try changing your CDID. if it says “Italian I” and its not working, change it to “Italian II”. This hopefully will take care of the issue. if it does not then please hold on till contest close, I will put up a troubleshooting manual which will include what the program is expecting from each language and since it seems these language sets are not very consistant with each other, i will code in some overrides so you can tell the program exactly what it should do if it does not match what I have. This will be in the CONFIG.TRS file.

Does n e 1 know if this program works on firmware 3.03 OE A? I can’t get it to work. If not, which firmware will it work on besides 1.50? And where do you put the src file?

I have run it under 1.50, 3.03oe, 3.10oe, 3.40oe

You dont have the put the src file anywhere. thats just the source file. :D you would read that if you want to see how the program is made, or to make changes to it.

2007-05-09 19:27:19

Maybe it just doesn’t work under 3.03 oe A? I could upgrade to oe C or 3.10 oe. I just dont wanna brick it.

Comment by foebea
2007-05-09 20:16:58

with the oe firmwares there are almost no permanant bricks. you can set up a recovery folder with the 1.50 eboot, so if it bricks just hold down righttrigger while turning on the psp and enter recovery mode to flash 1.50. then you can upgrade to oe again. i dont remember how to make the recovery folder though, but google search should turn it up.

nope, all rosetta stone content goes in the languages folder. basically, go to your rosetta stone cd, copy all the lessons you want and copy the TRS files and then paste them into the Languages folder on the psp.

Awesome job foebea! The only problem I found was that if the text for the card is more than 2 words, it runs off the screen, instead going to the next line (something to improve in the next release?). The graphical interface is nice and simple but I made slight changes to the look, re-did the “correct” and “incorrect” pics and also made them clear, feel free to take em:

also any chance to get PCT to view without converting first?

Comment by foebea

thats random for ya :)
i make an array of 1,2,3,4 and randomize it for the images.
i make an array of 1,2,3,4 and randomize if for the sounds and text.
if button press selects cardnumber which matches sound/text number, then correct. else incorrect

Eeverything works perfectly for me for the Japanese Language… I converted the .SND sound files to 22kHz .mp3 (no renaming, straight convertions), then afterwards I just made a bath file which renamed all .mp3 files to .swa (you dont really need to make a bath file, I just did it so I dont have to rename all those file manually… At last, I resized all the .pict files to have the width 163 pixels (using batch function is Photoshop) and and saved them all as jpegs… As for the files to be tranfered, I basically transfered all the files in the language CD into the language folder, then did the above changes to them…

To fix the blue screen with Japanese I, I had to copy *all* of the data directories JPN01-* to JPN04-* and all of the PCA01-* to PCA04-* ones. Then I copied over the CDID.TRS file to the psp and removed the ‘TRS’ from the top of the file and copied the Japanese I line to the top.

This works, but the words sound like a record played too fast. It’s all in extreme fast forward. Anyone know what’s up with that? All the files are .mp3.

Is there a way to convert pct files?

Comment by foebea
2007-09-22 11:57:09

yep, pct, snd, au… these formats need to be converted still. Going into this i had not realized how common they were. rosettashard has changed the format for some of thier languages, and the languages are not even backward compatible with the official program.. Tagalog and languages like it only work with the most recent release from rosetta stone themselves.

It will be a while for those yet. if its just pct and au being the issue, they can be converted, but if the filenames and folderstructures do not match normal language sets then they will not work even if you convert them. Just renaming the folders wont help if the file names are all wrong as well.

Yeah my question was actually about tagalog too. As far as I know it is one of the languages that requires a newer version of Rosetta Stone. If you need tagalog let me know, I can get it to you for educational purposes.

It’s great that such application exists, but its terrible misfortune, that it doesn’t work under CFW 3.90-M33-2 on Psp SLIM, that doesn’t have support for kernel 1.5… I’ve take an attempt to launch Rosetta on Psp slim, using TimeMachine by DarkAlex, that enables the 1.5 kernel on Slim. The application starts, but it’s useless cuz’ the GUI troubleshoots awfully…
So i’m really upset.
DOES ANYONE KNOW, How to launch it ON PSP SLIM?????
