Daedalus R11 (N64 Emulator) Released

greg | May 6, 2007

StrmnNrmn comes storming through after much anticipation for Daedalus R11 — the Nintendo 64 emulator for the PSP. StrmnNrmn has devoted a significant amount of time and effort into Daedalus, and it certainly shows…

The R11 change list:

  • [*] Large overhaul of rom settings and preferences. All settings should now be persistant.
  • [+] Native support for palettised textures for faster rendering and less memory usage.
  • [+] Provided a fixed size pool for all texture memory, to limit memory usage.
  • [+] Expansion Pak enabled by default.
  • [!] Updated rom info database to include save mechanism for many roms.
  • [!] Fix memory leak in texture cache.
  • [!] Fixed conversion of RGBA/32bpp textures with odd alignments.
  • [!] Fix crash which occurred when recolouring textures in low memory situations.
  • [^] Large rewrite of texture cache to reduce memory usage and improve performance.
  • [^] Various optimisations to the way textures are looked up in the cache and installed.
  • [^] Optimise offsetting/scaling of texture coordinates.
  • [^] Improve performance of dynarec fragment cache and reduce memory fragmentation.

    sick

  2. Chalky says:

I have to admit, I haven’t tried this emulator yet, I’ve been hearing it’s still a bit slow. With all these releases though I think I’ll download it and judge for myself.

Regardless of speed, it’s far beyond something I could make, so I can’t complain really ;).

  27. KahnArtizt07 says:

well paper mario still doesnt work at all. thats a bummer..

  28. SCARFIELD says:

  29. 89 says:

Wow , wow, wow and wow. Very good, keep up the magic, bro.

  30. Hector-Vazquez says:

it’s the same thing i think,
    it’s still slow

  31. philly says:

saves work with mario 64, can see lots of hard work has gone into this, many thanks to the author!

  32. rockhead631 says:

    does golden eye work?

  33. This was the same type of incrimental progress that was seen on GBA emulation …. months and months of 1 to 5 percent increases in speed and whatnot … I’m really glad to see that there is still work and interest on this project, but it’s really not going to come together till more than one emu developer gets involved in the project (just like with GBA) and brings a bit of info / experience to the table that ROCKETS the progress forward too 90 to 100 percet perfection.

    • grey_max says:

Guess you don’t know who StrmnNrmn really is. Hes the guy that made the PC N64 emulator that so many of are current N64 emulators are based off of(Many still use his same core). So basically, there is no one who knows more who can storm onto the scene. But it would be nice to see StrmnNrmn port this core back to the PC so PC users could have one huge final update to daedalus.

      • Just because StrmnNrmn is the person responsible for the PC N64 emu doesn’t mean that he needs to work on this project alone. Researchers often work in TEAMS, I think it’s always beneficial to have a second set of eyes on things like this. In any case. I don’t really see the point in alerting us all to updates with only 10% increase in speed when that doesn’t make the one game that’s currently playable any MORE playable than it already is.

  34. NootchBan says:

Cheers. Either not SM 64 is a little slicker, but not with audio… Audio is stuttery.

I’m sure tweaking settings for each game will help, but unless my roms are broken, there isn’t much change from earlier versions.

I’m still running down the list of roms to try.

  35. KingPepper says:

i don’t know, i could only get into 2 Games Maybe Three at a Push with Version R10, Now this Version R11 has Over 5 Are Working, SM64, M.Kart64,SMB, up to Level 3 then Unplayable sadly, Starfox64, All Star Tennis 99, Fifa Road to the World Cup 98, RidgeRacer64…..Yeah Not Bad, Not Tested Too Many So Far……….Keep up the Great Coding StrmnNrmn, Ihis is Amazing How far this has Come, he says he is working on getting Super Smash Bros to work alot Better in R12, Can’t wait for that……:)

  36. Miles says:

thanks for another let down. this emulators been out for 6 years and it still sucks. try getting some help from the guys at nester j they seem to know what it takes to release an emulator that works.

    • senormojo says:

um the psp has not been out for six years, and it is completely different making a emulator for the psp and making one for the pc

    • Bailey says:

LMAO, you’re an arrogant dipshit Miles, and ignorant to boot. You have no idea what you’re talking about, if you don’t like it, why don’t you just fuck off. “Thanks for another let down?” Are you paying him for his work? No? Then shut the fuck up.

    • ONEDEADLYVENOM says:

U r an ungrateful person , where is the thanks u for trying strmm but it isnt what I expected , but ur mos def improving on this emu!
Keep at at man u will eventually get it !

No u prefer just sitting on ur behind and lemme shoot down any 1 that make the home brew scene what it is now , why r u on this site any way ask urself?

iT’S BECUZ MANY CODERS AND HOMEBREWERS MADE THIS PSP HACKING SCENE ALL POSSIBLE HAVE U DONATED TO ANY 1 OF THEM LATELY SINCE UR OBVIOUSLY PLEASED WITH SOME 1′S WORK BY NOW IF UR HERE STILL!!!!

It’s like yall r just waiting for good ppl that try hard everyday to fail so yall can spit on them , is that the kind of person u are?

U r that type of person that seems the thrive on attacking a honorable person when they r on the ground , u give out the aura of a low life punk that would frown at an ederly woman and kick her walking stick from her hand!

SHAME ON U MAN UR JUST WRONG IN THE WAY U SPAM HERE N JUST BE NEGATIVE TO SOME 1 THATS HELPING US ALL …………FREEEEE OF CHARGE !

      Y R U LIKE THAT ?????

Any way Strmm I havent tried this yet but i did the last 1 and yes it was not at the best possible emulation as yet but most of us myself included, do appreciate what u have accomplished so far , and thank you and plzzzzz continue to do ur tireless work!!

      ODV out!

  37. afx237v7 says:

nice work StrmnNrmn getting better with every release :D thankyou for all the work your putting into this! + Godam! STFU you bastards who have nothing good to say about this project, you ungratefull imbeciles! next time you cross the road dont bother looking.

  38. rockhead631 says:

    does goldeneye work???

  39. nooby says:

Thanks StrmnNrmn for another great update of the N64! :)

However, I have to admit that the emulator still doesn’t support a lot of games. The sound is also crappy and not to talk about the speed increasements (except mario games), what is even going slower than my grandmother.

Beside of all that, still great work ;)

  40. SCARFIELD says:

Can someone tell me percentage wise how fast sm64 is

  41. echo says:

Super Mario 64 is definitely faster in certain areas :)
This is the only emulator that I actually get excited waiting for :D So keep up the good work – N64 games look fantastic on the PSP screen :)

  42. Coasterfreak212 says:

Yes! Super Smash Bros Works (slowly, glitchy, and crappy, but still). I love you daedalus!

  43. chadp14 says:

good job deadulas btw if one rom of mario is slow download another thats why there are mixed results they are different rips

  44. JR says:

Way better than R10… Though my main concern is speed and sound, it’s a slow start to perfection…

  45. yyou says:

what the hell don’t release something if it’s only be increased by 5% to 10% it’s a waste of data you don’t have to please the crap out of us make us wait until it’s 20% speed up

  46. matz says:

Quality, NO GOLDENEYE DOESN”T WORK SO STOP ASKING. Thanks man, good stuff.

  47. flash says:

    ok i skipped R10
    so comparing to R9:
there’s improvement for sure. it’s REALLY smooth outside the castle and in the castle but once i get in bomb-omb island it gets a lil laggy and all this is WITHOUT audio.
i just got the first star on bomb-omb island well the sixth one.
    with audio, it’s still slow
    thanks for R11.

  48. Nouman says:

Thanks! this rules! and it seems people don’t notice your frame skip option. Putting that on 2-3 gives my 100% full speed on super mario

    • Miles says:

hmm a frameskip option that makes the speed seem smooth, sounds like that should have already been switched on by the author prior to release…

  49. games i tested says:

games i tested, zelda oct works sort of its slow but i actually managed to get outside of the treehouse and walk around a bit, too lagy tho to run and boses and stuff would be a bitch to do. Super mario 64 works Great! thats one of the best games and it works almsot perfectly, a little slow fps but other wise nice

  50. gamesadict says:

    thanks man! nice work. :)

  51. sergio says:

DOES SUPER SMASH Bros. work please let me know

  52. chrislawrance says:

i have to say that i find mario playable at this speed and so do other people ive let play it. i have played mario all week long and havent even booted a UMD so good work StrmnNrmn. your the reason my PSP isnt being put in a cupboard and isnt being replaced with a ipod.

  53. kevhey5 says:

    good job..keep at it

  54. an0nymous says:

WOOHOO.. i got zelda working but its a bit laggy n sounds is not good but it works n is playable !! keep up the good job dude ! cant wait until the next few release

  55. cozzy says:

anyone want roms for this??? go to http://www.dohgames.com it has ALL of them…

  56. Fernando says:

Nice work StrmnNrmn, next time try to use the N64 BIOS on your emulator, maybe can help you.

  57. Jim says:

    Dear dickfaces:

The N64 was a more sophisticated system than the PS1. It took fucking Sony itself, with access to all sorts of information about the architecture of both its systems (that we don’t have) to make a PS1 emulator that could do more than 50% speed with competent compatibility.

StrmnNrmn is goddamn ONE PERSON. And he’s gotten Mario 64 playable at borderline full-speed without audio. That’s quite an accomplishment. How about we all stop being dickfaces and appreciate the fact that somebody is trying to keep the dream of a portable N64 alive? Without StrmnNrmn, nobody would be working on an N64 emulator for the PSP, so please don’t take his work for granted.

    • Miles says:

what about monkey 64? someones working on that dick mouth. i whavn’t seen a release from them in a while and I wouldnt be surprised if they suddenly released a version that blows deadulus out of the water because they spend time working on it while sormy seems to put needless effort in pre releases and ads for future releases.

  58. Jim says:

Oh, also, a footnote for all you dickfaces:

He’s doing this for free. It’s a leisure project. He’s working on making the N64 playable on the go for all you dickfaces FOR FREE IN HIS SPARE TIME.

Obviously this emulator has a long way to go, but it’s one guy working on a system much more complicated and hardware-intensive than the functionally emulated systems that run on the PSP, like the SNES and PS1.

  59. vile says:

man i bricked my psp updating to 3.40OEA so now i dont get to try it out! :( im depressed! does anyone think its worth it getting the up nand chip t fix my psp?

  60. dOOmy says:

    paper mario aint work

  61. Synn says:

Guys I know its frustarting to hear muppets bashing and/or flaming this but please remember these are the twats that only check this site to run latest oe firmwares cause they are too cheap to buy the games legally. Notice how this item only has 70-odd comments so far when new hacked f/w’s get close to 300 by this time? Ignore ‘em, they are just retards.

    • Miles says:

You would have to be a dope to blow your paychecks on games when there really only a dollars worth of plastic. whos the real retard, me who has over 100 psp games i bought for forty dollars or you, who buys individual games for that much….same goes for dvd’s and cd’s.

      • Synn says:

Whos the real retard? I’m gonna go ahead and say the one who is actively discouraging developers from producing any further psp content by showing its not financially viable.

      • Bailey says:

OMG, are you completely fucked? What about the teams of developers who spent months to years making the game that comes on that plastic worth a few dollars? You’re a bottom feeder mate, scum. And i’d guess you contribute as much to society as you do here in these news posts.

      • Synn says:

One more note: “blow your paycheck”? Buddy, if your paycheck amounts to little more than $40 I reckon it’s time to seek alternative employment.

  62. matt says:

thats not the only reason people like the newest hacked firmware. its so they can run the latest umd’s and still have homebrew support.

    • Bailey says:

True, but i think it’s more the case so they can play later rev firmware iso’s, not the umd itself. Not sayin everyone who uses it are pirates tho..

But yeah great work as always strmn norman, but taking into consideration the hardware and architectural differences, do you really think it’s possible to ever get this running 100% with sound?

  63. Quickae says:

I have some major graphics and speed problems, when playing basically any rom i own. e.g. When I play zelda, links rooms is a green octogon with green squares. Could anyone help me?

  64. Chris Shamama says:

sounds like a lot of haterate. I appreciate your hard work and energy. Your emulator will be the most incredible work ever.l It will bring closure to this incredible game system that came out. All the oldschoool, brought to the new school. You kick ass, strmnNrmn.

    • Miles says:

its not hateraid… its just bull releasing a new version every month when they STILL DONT WORK. have some pride in your work and bust ass until you have a finished product we can wait its not like we could do any better. excellent job stormy

      • Afx237v7 says:

Miles you dont know shit do you? yet i get the impression that in some way you have deluded yourself into thinking that you have some kind of worthwile contribution that you need to share with us….which you dont.Myself and many other people like the fact that StrmnNrmn releases a new version at regularish intervals, since we like to see how the project is developing, even if that development is only a 5 -10% improvement. its pretty obvious you have no friends, and that your pretty young, so to make your self feel better you come and post needless comments (as you have no one to talk to) and slag people off. (as you would never have the kehones to say shit to anyone in the realworld) your going to have a pretty shitty life, so have fun not having enough cash to buy legit software, and il rest asured that your life will slowly unravel into an utter dissapointment for you. oh yes, and fuck off!

        • DopeFiend says:

lol i rekon you summed him up perfectly :D

        • Miles says:

ouch you got me… im so sad now my life is so miserable everybody hates me nobody likes me. Oh except for the people who dont look forward to downloading the latest version of deadulus because they actually have lives. Burn

          • DopeFiend says:

i wouldnt bother saying anything else mate, your digging yourself into a deep hole. you said it right with “everybody hates me nobody likes me” id say that probably goes without exception

          • Tricky says:

miles take te hint n piss off

          • miles is STILL a fuckwad says:

Well you wouldn’t have time to download ‘the latest version of deadulus’ (sic), with all the time you spend showering this comments section with your vile stench.

  65. ZphynX says:

    I love StrmnNrmn!! :)))))

  66. Dave says:

Stop with the updates and make one with good speed – we could wait!
U don’t have to update every month with these crappy speed updates (5% a 10 %) whuahahaah!

  67. How does it work says:

Man ive try alot to make this work. i have fireware 3.40 and i dont know how it works. need to know in wat folder i need to put them in. please help

  68. Surprised says:

Wow…just wow. Is everybody in the PSP scene 11 years old and just learning to swear??? Look at these posts!

In related news: the emulator is showing promise, keep up the good work though.

  69. Jim says:

I’m 25. I just happen to believe that pretty much everybody criticizing StrmnNrmn is a dickface.

  70. ToshiroMifune says:

Keep up the great work. Look forward to a functional N64 emulator in the future.

  71. vile says:

ok so i updated to 3;40 oea and before it finished flashing the dxar file it said”error occured while flasjing” so it shut down then i turned it back on and its just a blank screed. I have the recovery menu installed but restarting the psp and holding the right trigger wont bring up the recovery menu. does anyone know how to pop out the recobery menu another way is my my psp just another Nintendo DS (worthless)

  72. yahoo says:

great coding, keep it up mate

  73. yahoo says:

sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s bricked, hope it’s under warranty, good luck

  74. yahoo says:

vile, try removing and replacing the battery then boot with the right trigger, don’t think this will work though

  75. vile says:

:( i guess my psp is bricked and i have no warranty seeing that i was one of the first people to receive the original 1.5 on march 24 05! oh well ill maybe decide to try the mod chip someday. daedalus R11 never made it to my psp :(

  76. mako says:

i think i smell a nintendo fan boy, his name is miles. cant Admin delete his comments, hes obviously antagonising people with his dip shit comments that have no relevence. im not an advocate to petty bickering, but this guy is blows and deserves all the flames hes getting

  77. g3n says:

This is for anyone that has absolutely no clue what they are talking about. This isn’t a flame or anything of that nature. Listen, the developer is just tinkering around with an emulator for people to enjoy. He’s not a bad coder AT ALL. First off, when you’re trying to use other types of architecture in programming and try to have that code run on proprietary hardware, well you’ll have complications. There’s different types of compress rates for all of the graphical processing for each and every system. Each system has it’s own standards. Think about it this way, remember back in grade school (this applies to miles) when you have the wood blocks and you try to put the shapes through the hole. Imagine trying to stick the square hole into the circle hole. It’s not going to work right? Well this developer is trying to shave the block to fit. Think about it that way. So, don’t bash a developer for tinkering and playing around with new architecture for an application. Get a clue guys, and respect fellow developers.

  78. luciferangelus says:

I believe that both parties here are at fault. those of you who badmouth (because you’re not criticising… criticising is something constructive) the emu just because they can’t play their favourite game fullspeed with sound – and those of you who get angry and defend him at every minimally negative comment. just because someone isn’t a coder, it doesn’t mean he cannot point out and criticize (yeah, you’ve all read “have you done any better? so shut the **** up!”). you both ought to quit your flaming and leave the scene to someone who actually wants to talk about his experiences with it (thing that I myself am not doing, so I should shut up too I guess :P)

  79. Jared says:

Hi All, Im sorry to do this but ive got to ask a admins help here. I cant keep reading through 100′s of post with Cussing and Fussing. The comments are for constructive purposes, not so someone can badmouth this and that. As far as questions, there is a place for questions. This is Comments left about this particular version. Every post i ever find is delt with 10-16 year olds with bad mouths and even worse attitudes. I Vote to Ban all cussing and bad mouth users. Im also requesting an admins e-mail support on this please. When im on here im usually at work, and have lots of time to kill. (Specially Since i work on Ebay) And im sure im not the only one getting sick and tired of all the disrespectfulness from person to person on this site.

    • Paul says:

to be perfectly honest thats a terrible idea, if you ban the fuck shit cunt what your going to end up with is F**K S**T C*nt and im pretty sure the admin arnt going to want to have to constantly read through all the comments and remove things + censorship is never a good thing, i hate playing Battlefield and getting pissed off with someone and getting kicked for swearing at them, swearing is a great thing when done correctly, it can be very elegantly done. try and see it from a more amusing point of view, i find the the tit for tat verbal warfare to be quite amusing to read. obviously the lame comments of certain folk, eg MILES – are a total waste of space, but i like reading the well versed retaliation against them/him. while your readin these comments at work and you see a shit one coming why not just skip it? just scroll down a wee bit and everythings fine.

  80. Vandel says:

Thanks a lot, you are doing a great job.

  81. crapattack says:

I have a few questions if someone has the time to answers them.

Can someone that has been folowing this project pls post what is confirmed to be runing on this emu ?

With the new memory leak and the expantion worked on some new ones may be running.

Could someone post what’s new that is running, and how well it runs ?

Whats marios state at right now, is it 100% 90 % ?

What are the best setting for better FPS ?

Any info would be a great help. thanks : )

  82. Charly says:

well thnxs for the download , now where could i get proper N64 emulators??

  83. StrmnNrmn says:

thanks guys i will have next update very soon

  84. erban says:

OK so Frameskip-2 and audio off I think mario is about 85% and with audio I think 75% definatly playable ZELDA is getting close too some places in game are runnin at 29FPS…….You know i Think if he concentrates on the main N64 Titles Like Zelda, mario 64,mario kart 64,goldeneye,perfect dark, turok….etc this would also make other roms work as well ………………THANKS STRMNNRMN

  85. crapattack says:

Thank you erban i appreciate the info. Its goood to start seeing this emu really start to take off. I cant wait for the next update.

Any word on if the emu will be at 333 MHZ soon ?

Great Job on the emu StrmnnNrmn .

  86. Richard C. Mongler says:

    Wasted time installing this.
I see no difference from R8 to R11.
Give it more time and thought before you release this.

  87. Bloodpool says:

hmmmm another realease, great job, but if people are complaining so much about the speed and how it actually works maybe you should wait a while before releasing the next one, until you feel like people will be satisfied with the release, me: i have no problems with it myself, i appreciate the work u put up, great progress man!!!!!!!

  88. cleaNer says:

    work on 3.40 OE?

  89. How does it work says:
