RosettaShard v.1 Released

Posted by greg

foebea’s language learning tool, RosettaShard, is transforming into quite the learning tool indeed. This past Sunday (by the way, Happy Easter!) foebea released v.1 with a few additions —

  • Support for Rosetta Stone language sets. (conversion required, see readme for details)
  • Demonstration card set has been formalized and can be replaced with your own language set by dropping in your TRS files.
  • Ability to select which unit and lesson to start with. Quickstart now loads your installed language at unit 1, lesson 1.

For the moment, the Rosetta Stone conversion process is a bit tedious, but should be improved — perhaps even automated — in future versions to come.

Important note #1: If you select a unit or lesson that is not on the memory stick the application will exit.

Important note #2: The application will only load the language set listed on the first line of your TRS file, so be sure to edit that before copying it over.

Hey! Looks like some smart people are making homebrew now! The title of the app reffers to the Rosseta Stone wich translated Egyptian to Hebrew(I think)
Nice! Good to have smart people around. :D

Lask weeks initial entry was mostly a proof of concept. It came with 8 cards and was usable only with them. This is the first real version in that it allows for actual use, and if development were to stop right now, the program would still be usable. Development will not stop though :)

cool, this is really useful, but where do we get language packs?

Language Packs are sold by Rosetta Stone at thier web site.

Certainly not an impulse buy, but if you want to learn a language it is not a bad way to go.

Is there a super easy way to convert these things?

    sadly not yet.
it involves renaming the audio files to mp3, then converting them, and then converting and resizing the images to png. :)

im working on an update to obviate that process. no luck yet but still grinding away at it.

there are programs out there that will do this recursively (all subdirectories) and keep the folder structure in tact. it took me about 30 minutes to find programs to do this that i liked, then it took about 40 minutes to convert a complete lesson.

its a lot of work i guess, but i think the end result it worth it as i can study the language anywhere i go.

Is it possible to release the individual language packs for the psp instead of everyone converting them personally? I have the packs but not the time to convert :(

no, that’s not going to happen. I’m not the owner of the language packs, and if I were I would be a lot richer because they are 200 bucks a pop.

besides, I’m working to develop the app so that either it will not be necessary, or to have a windows component to run the conversion.

The directions arent clear and this is a lot of work ..
Is this worth it if your going to release a new versions? will we have to do this over again when you update.. -___-
what is the kbs that is should be to be accepted by rosetta shard the mp3’s after converd from SND ect and why when i play them in say winamp they cut off like milisecond b4 they are supposed to also what is the layout we are supposed to place all this in.. the eboot folders.. thanks >___

ive converted mp3s in various programs using just the standard default settings and it works fine, they just need to be converted is all i know so far :)

As for it being worth it, well that is up to you. I will continue to release new versions of course, but the folder structure itself remains the same. It’s Rosetta Stones folder structure and you just dump it in the Languages folder as I have the DEMO01_01 folder now.

The update I am trying to work out may be a while coming. I am actually working on this right now, but how many divx movie players for the psp do we have so far? adding format compatability may not be easy, and as I am a novice it may prove impossible.

It is a lot of work, but if you plan on going through a rosetta stone lesson of about 300 hours, whats an extra few hours on top of that in the name of portability? :)

Trust me i truly respect what you have done if someone told me 2 years ago i would be using rosetta stone on psp id say ur crazy :D its was just the whole mp3 playing too fast thing that i was confused on and i ifgured out everything just goes under language XD

right on. yeah its been a bit rough getting it going. I actually started on the path to this 2 years ago for the PocketPC but i was unfortunate enough to be trying to learn VisualC++ in order to code it. I just can’t recommend it, I never got past the first 50 lines of code. very rough stuff.

im trying to get the code working for other formats, but i will make that take a backseat and try to get the mp3 playback i have to work without conversion, and without renaming if possible. the SND files all are in Level 2 languages i think, so that can hold for a while.

Very Nice! I use rosetta stone, I am currently learning Chinese and Japanese and the fact that this homebrew will add that much more portability will seriously help me. Thanx and I can’t wait until the new version comes out!

This is pretty sweet. I have several language packs that I’d love to be able to bring with me on my PSP during flights and what-not. Thanks for the work, keep it up if you are able to. It is definitely appreciated!

Great, I am wondering if I can use the basic concept to make my own cards, say for different classes and things? Do you think it would be possible? I love rosetta stone and always thought it would be nice to have a portable version of say http://web.mac.com/jrc/Genius/

Amazing, what a great idea!! I wish I had thought of it, but then again I probably could not code it just yet. I’m actually surprised Rosetta themselves haven’t thought of it. Well if they ever do, we know where it came from first - homebrew as usual. Really, great work, and keep it up, I look forward to the next release. Only wish I could help coding/testing in some way…. Thanks again!!

I dont have a mac so cant see Genius, but I am certain I can code it in. In fact, the final release once everything else is done will be completely modular like original HalfLife was, and you will be able to create new layouts and routines on the go.

If you get me some details on Genius and screenshots, how it is supposed to work, maybe a video? then I can add direct support for it once the Homebrew Competition is over at the end of this month.
