RosettaShard — Initial Release

greg | April 2, 2007

A new submission to the PSP Hacks Homebrew Contest… It comes from developer foebea, and I’ll tell you this, RosettaShard will evolve into the most educational language-learnin’ homebrew app for the PSP ;). I personally haven’t heard of the “Rosetta Stone” language learning tool until now…

An application which has been long desired by some. This will allow you to use some of the more popular tools from the Rosetta Stone language learning tool while on the go. This early version includes 8 flashcards with sound. The flashcard images are royalty free images and the vocal work was done by my mom. This will allow you to see what the purpose of this application is, and with any luck, those of you who have not heard of The Rosetta Stone might check them out. They really are the best for language learning.

Anyone speak Inuktitut?

The controls:

RosettaShard Controls

Just to clarify things quickly; this cannot interpret Rosetta Stone language sets just yet. But the current goal is to closely mimic the same behaviour.

Download:

To clarify, this is not a psp version of rosetta stone. Rather this is a flash card program that just happens to be able to use the images and sounds on the rosetta stone cd.

unless you can load the real lang programs from rosetta stone, (i have the german set) it seems rather pointless at this point.

i would l-o-v-e to see this app when more work has been done.

that’s the goal :)
the only problem at this point is the text. i belive all the rosetta stone text may be hardcoded into the application, not sitting in text files on the cd. the text also exists in PDF files on the cd, but they are password protected against copying, so it may not be legal for me to write a program to format that into a text file, however if we can get PDFs to load on a PSP i think it would be within our rights to read from the PDF within this program. If not, there are still ways to make it work but I will not be allowed to automatically do it with my program as I would have to remove the password protection on the PDF. :(

are you sure? i dont have it installed right now but looking at the cd each one has a txt file with the words on them ie

DEU01_01
—DE0101.TXT
Deutsch,Deutsch,01,1,10,Times,18,12,24789,Copyright ©1998 Fairfield Language Technologies@ein MŠdchen@ein Junge@ein Hund@eine Katze@…

so on, and thats for the each lesson has its own txt.

Having the ability to remove the password and giving it to the masses it different than including it in the programs all you have to do is the same thing the psp devs did for the iso world i already have all the languages for this program so id really like to have this on psp as soon as i read rosetta shard i knew what it was ^~^d

cool name :D

lol…. no..?

Google.com > Rosetta stone history ~

This program was named after the language program if you couldn’t get that from the description ~ its a language program the military uses as well as lots of other cooperations.

Hi there, thought i’d comment on this. I used to work for them back when the company first started and have always tried to push them to develop for other platforms. I personaly had a prototype i wrote for a PSX but they didnt think it would be usefull i guess. Any way there ware also other prototypes made that worked with palm and pocketpc devices but again once the online version was developed the ideas ware scraped. I personaly thought it was great because a lot of people that didnt have a pc or a mac but had consoles could use the program and for once parents would be able to say that the consoles are just for games. But for those who dont know the online version can technicaly run on any platform that has a web browser. the only draw back is that you have to have the internet connectivity at the time your using it.

Very true, the online version works as long as your browser supports it, and you are online whenever you want to use it.

The problem though is not all screens are the same aspect ratio and so a lot of screen space would be wasted on devices that dont have a lot of space to waste.

I sent messages asking for a pocketpc version in ‘05 and ‘06 and so now i make my own :)

Is the online version free?!??

Comment by foebea
2007-04-03 17:29:50

nope, Rosetta Stone offers an online subscription to languages I think at 40$ a month. it’s been a while since I checked it out though. I highly recommend it. They also have online demos for all languages to get a taste of it.

sure i’d like to learn how to spell BEHAVIOR.

Too right, Greg. Canadian English is COLOURFUL, so put down your ARMOUR and leave the man to his BEHAVIOUR. Yeah, i tend to mix it up a little between american and canadian english :P I’m originally german, moved to canada some 17 years ago. This site rocks, and I’ll probably use this program (could always use a brushup on german language myself :P

So, can i add my own images to this?? Or how would I got about making my own flash cards?

Comment by foebea
2007-04-04 12:34:01

Yep, although in this current version it only supports 8 flashcards. just make them png files, and in the format 010101.png, 010102.png, etc. this is the naming convention it is using at the moment since it closely matches rosetta stone’s. in future release that should open up quite a bit to allow more freely named files.
