PSPMSX v1.1.0: NTSC/PAL MSX Emulator

greg | March 18, 2007

ZX-81 sittin’ all cool, portin’ some emulators outside the school. When a couple of unappreciative commentors, up to no good, started posting crap in PSP Hacks’ neighbourhood. But ZX-81, naw, he ain’t scurrrrr’d, PSPMSX v1.1.0, ya heard?

fMSX emulates MSX, MSX2, and MSX2+ 8bit home computers. It runs MSX/MSX2/MSX2+ software on many different platforms including Windows, MacOS, Unix, MSDOS, AmigaOS, etc. See http://fms.komkon.org/fMSX/ for further informations.

And, obviously, PSPMSX is a port of fMSX. :)

PSPMSX v1.1.0 changes:

  • No need anymore to restart PSPMSX to change the MSX model!
  • Add option to toggle between PAL/NTSC
  • Add option to change the RAM size
  • Bug fix in the max render mode

Custom Firmware 1.62 Increasing Edition A Update1

greg | March 18, 2007

Update: Although I’ve seen no reports of bricking, its been advised that you DO NOT upgrade to IE A Update 1. Download has been removed. See source link.

becus25 has released the next iteration of custom firmware Increasing Edition — 1.62 IE A Update1. You may recollect “Increasing Edition” from previous PSP Hacks coverage; it’s a great, light-weight, firmware alternative for the PSP. Its technique for customizing the look & feel of the PSP XMB is stellar too!

General functions:

  • Hide corrupt icons.
  • Skip Sony logo.
  • You can start not xploited eboots.
  • You can start modules.
  • Contains two recovery menus. If it does not detect one it loads the other.
  • ** You can change the speed of CPU from VSH/XMB . (press HOME+SELECT to change speed).
  • ** In software system puts “version 1.62 IE A”.
  • ** Recovery and the XMF estan now fused. (I have no idea what this means…)

Recovery functions:

  • You will be able to recover the PSP of semi-brick.
  • Usb available.
  • You can personalize XMB
  • You can have three styles of icons of the XMB in the MS and change them from recovery (in this version, this setting is disabled, but in other versions will be enabled)
  • ** You can activate/deactivate Autoboots (put the autoboot on \psp\game\boot\eboot.pbp ) from recovery without any kept configuration file.
  • ** Recovery mode, this structured like a menu.

** signifies new feature

CISO Converter Plus! v1.0.4 Released

greg | March 18, 2007

The last we heard from kapoue3 was with the release of “Yet Another CSO Compressor” (Yacc) GUI. Now kapou3 presents something new in CSO compression, CisoPlus!

CisoPlus! is a command line tool which enhances BOOSTER’s CSO compression/decompression methods. The concept remains the same: shrink ISO images to save some precious bytes on your memory stick. As per the included changelog, you will notice new options which define the Plus-factor…

  • there are still the original compression/decompression functions of Booster
  • there is a optimized compression version for all CPU
  • a simulation mode to estimate quickly the final compression rate without writing the CSO (up to 10 times faster)
  • a new option: threshold which allows (as Dax) to increase the size of the CSO slightly but reduce the lags during the game (e.g. GTA). This option gives as good results as the DAX and the CSO can work on custom firmware or devhook without plugins
  • a special optimized compression for DualCore Cpu owners. It can be twice faster than the initial version.

Ideally CisoPlus! with integrate easily with any CSO front end. To see the program’s full usage, pass the “-fullhelp” argument. i.e.) from Windows command prompt: “cisoplus.exe -fullhelp”

PSPSSH v1.0.1: SSH2 Client for the PSP

greg | March 17, 2007

Something new and useful for PSP enthusiasts / system administrators on-the-go… Homebrew dev. extraordinaire, ZX-81, has released a port of Matt Johnston’s “Dropbear” SSH2 server & client.

PSP SSH Client

Dropbear is a small SSH2 Server and Client running on a variety of POSIX-based platforms. It has been mainly developed by Matt Johnston (see matt’s web site).

I’ve sucessfully ported the version 0.48.1 to the PSP.

The terminal Vt100 emulation part of PSPSSH is based on the work of Danzel for his Telnet client for PSP.

Many thanks to Matt Johnston for this nice SSH client, thanks to Danzel for his Virtual kerboard and his Vt100 stuff, and to all PSPSDK developpers.

What’s Next for the PSP?

greg | March 17, 2007

Its sure been a slow couple of days on the homebrew/hacking front — nothing new, nothing worthwhile, nothing we haven’t seen before; has it all been done? I want to know, and I’m sure a few of you are wondering the same — what’s next for the PSP? Is it merely firmware file flashers and LUA homebrew on the road ahead? Someone must be working on, or have some knowledge, of the next earth shattering PSP break-through that will revive the scene; will Sony do it first, or do we have faith in the the clever homebrew developers and hackers belonging to the community we’ve all grown to love?

Lots of questions and no answers; what are YOU anticipating? There’s an ongoing discussion here, as well, leave your comments/ideas/feedback/thoughts, etc… below.

EDIT: by the way, Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Enjoy the green beer. ;)

greg | March 14, 2007

Jaime has updated his OpenTTD PSP port to version 0.5.0 final.

OpenTTD is an open source clone of Microprose’s “Transport Tycoon Deluxe” with the added touch of some homebrew magic — you can even play it online! The official OpenTTD project can be found over at openttd.org. One of my personal favourite homebrews.

PSP Wake-on-LAN (WOL) Released

greg | March 13, 2007

Here’s a new innovative homebrew app from developer EvilDooinz over @ dcemu. If your PC’s network adapter and motherboard BIOS support the Wake-on-LAN (WOL) technology, then you’re in luck!

While the PC remains in standby or hibernation mode, this app will send a UDP packet over your network waking whichever system using the MAC & IP address defined in “address.lst.” In layman’s terms, “turn on (or wake) your PC using the PSP.”

Instructions from the readme:

Step 1: Setup Windows XP

  • right click the desktop and goto the Screen Saver tab then click the power button at the bottom
  • select the hibernate tab and make sure enable hibernation is checked.

Step 2: Setup lan card

  • Goto the control panel open the system icon, select the hardware tab click device manager.
  • from the device manager go down to network adapters and expand it by clicking the + sign.
  • double click you lan card and open its properties window, select the advanced tab select the property WakeOnLAN From powerOff and enable this. then click on the Power Management tab in the lan card propertys window.
  • check the first 2 boxes this is a must.

Step 3:

  • edit address.lst with your mac address and ip ie) 01:02:03:04:05:06 192.168.1.100

Setp 4:

  • copy the EBOOT.PBP and address.lst to your psp game150/game folder

For additional help with setting up WOL, see this howto.

IR Keyboard PSP Quake Released!

greg | March 13, 2007

Wow, this certainly took me by surprise… Due to the overwhelming response rein4ce has received from the IR keyboard supported PSP Quake video, there is a release!

After a few code tweaks, rein4ce has made it available for public consumption! Included are only the PSP Quake binaries, modified with support for the PalmOne IR keyboard, of course. It’s up to you to be resourceful and locate the data files yourself; or if you’re lazy, click here for the shareware version. In fact, it has only been tested with the shareware version, but it’s likely the full version won’t have any issues. Once you’ve obtained the data files, copy them to the “ID1″ directory under the “Quake” folder.

A few notes…

ok, I tweaked the code so it now supports multiple key input (up to 3 - that’s this keyboards limit) - you can play the game using only keyboard.

you can bind all keys to fit your needs: arrows, control, alt etc.

only Caps Lock as far as I remember does not work

there’s a small bug - rarely if you keep rapidly pressing too many keys at once (5-6) they might get stuck, so it’s requered to press that specific key one more time to unstuck it. however I can’t imagine anyone hitting the keyboard with all their fingers at once :)

Just to clarify — you’re able to use both the PSP controls, as normal, and the IR keyboard simultaneously.

Download: PSP Quake w/ IR Keyboard Support

Great work, rein4ce!

  • Fixed the stupid bug which caused the app to crash when editing text

Liberty City Stories .IMG Extractor Beta

greg | March 12, 2007

Its been awhile since we’ve seen any GTA:LCS related hacks, but suddenly, like a quick donkey-punch, Dustcrazy releases Liberty City Stories IMG Extractor v1.0.1. Responsible for extracting models and textures from Grand Theft Auto’s main IMG file — for both the PSP and PS2 version — GTA modders/hackers/cheaters alike will definitely have some fun with this.

Requirements:

  • Either the PSP or PS2 image file
  • 40 MB Free RAM, or the size of the IMG. Note the twice as much memory than required will increase the speed.
  • Time… Do to the current process in the build it requires a good amount of time. I plan to improve the amount of time that this takes. Its due to the slower speed of Windows file reading/writing vs the Windows API version…
  • Visual Basic 6 Runtimes

A great achievement indeed; let the GTA hacking carry on! Installation and usage can be found in “ReadMe.rtf.”

Download: Liberty City Stories .IMG Extractor Beta v1.0.1

Thanks for the heads up Dustcrazy.
