PSP Sound Reactive LED Mod

Posted by greg

Whether or not you’ve dropped LSD with Acid Rob, this new mod from CyberPyrot, along side the AcidMods R&D Team, will be sure to trip you out. Check out the YouTube-age…

Now that’s some Funky Cold Medina! That is in fact the LED’s illuminating to the beat. All made possible with this chip…

And a little update from CyberPyrot…

This is a mod that has been in the development stage for a long time. Thread after thread I have decided to do the mod to appease our members. There have been many skeptics as to the possibility of this mod, well here it is all internal. The schematics will be posted soon but don’t expect detailed pictures until F00 F00 or Neubit does there version. I will however answer any questions about how this was done.

Modify Your “Home” Screen

Posted by greg

Another slick way to further customize your PSP has been discovered and released by Z33. Z33’s “Imposer” app will allow a custom bitmap to be used as a replacement for the home screen. You know, the screen that appears when you press the “Home” button.

Readme.txt provides clear instructions on how to inject/extract bitmaps for the impose. Of course this operation must be performed on a decrypted “impose.prx” & “impose.rsc.” Bitmaps are restricted to 332×166 24bit and 522×546 8bit, for impose.prx and impose.rsc respectively.

Impose GUI is courtesy of nicinico.

The required tools to dump & decrypt the PSP firmware, as well the firmware updates, can be found here.

Hexaxis XXI Alpha Release

Posted by greg

Update: Quick update…

  • Added Up key for fast down
  • Game Over when you hit the top (and reset)
  • Added More dice sounds.

Grab it below.

Another eye-opening PSP homebrew game… Hexaxis XXI comprises fantastic graphics, cool music/sound, and the addictive game-play you’d expect from any great puzzle game. Currently lacking is the high score table, as well the “score” and “multiplier” text in the upper left isn’t as pretty as the author (Timwillhack) desires; check back for updates after the NEO homebrew competition. In the meantime, have fun!

Hexaxis XXI Screenshot

Controls:
Directional Pad: move dice left, right, and down (no up, it’s like tetris)
Square, Circle, Cross, Triangle: rotate the grid
L and R Triggers: zoom in and out
Select: Exit Game

There are many videos on YouTube showing off its coolness. Check ‘em out.

Download: Hexaxis XXI

Also find more of Timwillhack’s developments over at Darksoft.net. Great work!

piKey — A PSP Keyboard Driver

Posted by greg

Fanjita and harleyg have released what they call “piKey”. The introduction says it all…

πKey is a keyboard driver for your PSP. Its aim is to allow you to use just about any keyboard (or similar input device) as a natural method of input on your PSP.

Imagine being able to use your keyboard to control any PSP game or homebrew, and even the PSP’s XMB menu and on-screen keyboard, automatically and without needing any changes to the other software. This is what πKey aims to give you.

This is an early release, demonstrating just some of the possibilities. The open, extensible framework allows πKey to be extended with new plugins, to allow support for different types of input hardware, and different input environments on the PSP.

It’s reported to work best under Dark_AleX’s custom firmware, and includes an installer for the easiest installation possible. Supported inputs are various infra-red keyboards and serial I/O via the PSP’s headphone socket. Usability is straight forward; see the provided user guide (docs/user_guide.html) to get started.

As for the future, here is what’s in store:

  • New plugins for:
    • Input via Danzeff on-screen keyboard, for those who don’t have any input hardware. The Danzeff keyboard is the most efficient software keyboard that I’ve seen.
    • Output via Psprint and Danzeff keyboards, for homebrew that uses those already.
  • Proper UTF-8 support for non-US-ASCII characters.
  • An additional API for detecting keypress/release events - i.e. not just a character stream, but addressing individual keystates.
  • Support for loading πKey via HEN.
  • Improved configurability, for instance different keymapping in the CTRL plugin.

Download: piKey v0.1

Thanks Fanjita & harleyg!

PSPRadio 1.17.1349 Released

Posted by greg

M.C. Raf pushin’ PSPRadio versions like weight with a brand new one for that ass, PSPRadio 1.17.1349 — and the changelog will certainly keep your heads ringing…

PSP Radio Screenshot

NEW FEATURES:

  • (raf) Plugins: Added some VERY SIMPLE visualization plugins. This only works under TextUI at the moment. (Look under the Options-Plugins menu)
  • (raf) Plugins: PSPRadio saves current selected plugin in config file section PLUGINS:DEFAULT_VISUALIZER
  • (raf) Core: Localfiles: Empty directories are not listed anymore.
  • (albadross) TextUI: Updated screens for the visualizer plugins. Added new skins: Selector2 and Spectrum.
  • (raf) TextUI: Converted rendering to use page flipping (double buffering).
  • (raf) TextUI: Added a PLUGINS:DISPLAY_FPS option to config files. (not there by default — disabled).
  • (raf) Plugins: Added sample sourcecode for a simple visualizer plugin to the release.
  • (raf) Core: Changed the default button mapping to be closer to the original mapping, (so it matches the current skins).

BUG FIXES:

  • (raf) Core: Fixed button repeat handling that broke when implemented the button mapping. (This also corrected problems with HPRM)
  • (raf) Core: If resuming(from suspend) from a paused state, it would not continue from where it left off.

KNOWN BUGS:

  • (raf) TextUI: Sometimes, when switching skins all the text will disappear. Moving Up/Down, or pressing START is the current work-around.
  • (raf) Core: Static IP connections don’t work correctly. Seems the gateway is not used as it should. (Also, make sure CPU speed is 222 when establishing a WiFi connection).
  • (raf) Core: Module unloading doesn’t free up all memory correctly. Even though plugins can now be loaded/unloaded, the PSP can eventually crash as it runs out of memory (after loading/unloading enough times; even though I switched back and forth between the text and 3d UIs over 20 times, and everything worked fine).

AFKIM3 Multi-IM Client Released

Posted by greg

Danzel said it best — “AFKIM is back and better than ever!” I can second that… “Away from Keyboard Instant Messager” (AFKIM) initially appeared on the PSP homebrew scene almost exactly 1 year ago; it was later enhanced April of 2006, and today — prepare yourself, with a fresh update for the NEO homebrew competition, AFKIM3!

AFKIM3 Screenshot

AFKIM is an instant messaging (IM) client supporting the AIM, ICQ, MSN, GoogleTalk, and Yahoo! protocols.

AFKIM3 changelog:

  • Much better, more usable program.
  • Works in OE kernel, DHCP ONLY CURRENTLY, not sure why static IP address doesn’t work.
  • Faster display rendering (Keyboard lags less)
  • Better wifi handling - User can rechoose which to connect to if connecting fails.
  • Better menu system, lots more menu items.
    • Away / Back
    • Remove Account
    • Reconnect to Wifi (No more quitting AFKIM to reconnect! yay)
    • Get Buddy Details
    • Rename Buddy
    • Block/Unblock Buddy
    • Delete Buddy
  • Fixes related to pressing buttons, menus now continue scrolling if you hold up or down.
  • Better connection handling.
  • Many many code cleanups
  • Fix memory leaks (introduce a new known one)

There are current 2 versions:
- Experimental OE version, tested in game310 folder with OE 3.10′, seems to not work in 3.03
- 1.5 Version, tested in game150 folder on OE 3.10′

The OE Version works with WPA connections, you must use automatic network configuration however (DHCP)

Download:
AFKIM3 for 1.50 (tested on GAME150 with 3.10 OE-A’)
AFKIM3 for OE (experimental version for OE kernels)

PSP Steering Wheel Mod (Prototype)

Posted by greg

Do you remember the PSP modder going by the name of Neubit? I sure do; back in February Neubit shared a clever modification that replaces your original PSP battery with 3 AAA’s. That said and done, and proven to work quite well, Neubit has returned with a new mod currently being prototyped — the PSP Steering Wheel!

Here’s it in action…

This is a mod-in-progress, i didnt wire up a connection jack yet, so there are wires hanging everywhere, but hey, it works, it’s cool, it’s new, its original, Enjoy! And stay tuned for updates

Daedalus R10 Optimization Updates

Posted by greg

StrmnNrmn sharing his Daedalus R10 optimization strategies and progress in the latest blog. It details various methods used to further achieve stable, and playable, N64 emulation on the PSP.

Ending on this delightful and suspenseful note –

Overall these three changes give a combined 10-15% speedup on the various games I’ve tested, although there are roms that lie outside this range (some show an even greater speedup while others are more or less unaffected by the changes).

R10 is looking quite promising!
