piKey — A PSP Keyboard Driver
greg | March 20, 2007
Fanjita and harleyg have released what they call “piKey”. The introduction says it all…
πKey is a keyboard driver for your PSP. Its aim is to allow you to use just about any keyboard (or similar input device) as a natural method of input on your PSP.
Imagine being able to use your keyboard to control any PSP game or homebrew, and even the PSP’s XMB menu and on-screen keyboard, automatically and without needing any changes to the other software. This is what πKey aims to give you.
This is an early release, demonstrating just some of the possibilities. The open, extensible framework allows πKey to be extended with new plugins, to allow support for different types of input hardware, and different input environments on the PSP.
It’s reported to work best under Dark_AleX’s custom firmware, and includes an installer for the easiest installation possible. Supported inputs are various infra-red keyboards and serial I/O via the PSP’s headphone socket. Usability is straight forward; see the provided user guide (docs/user_guide.html) to get started.
As for the future, here is what’s in store:
- New plugins for:
- Input via Danzeff on-screen keyboard, for those who don’t have any input hardware. The Danzeff keyboard is the most efficient software keyboard that I’ve seen.
- Output via Psprint and Danzeff keyboards, for homebrew that uses those already.
- Proper UTF-8 support for non-US-ASCII characters.
- An additional API for detecting keypress/release events - i.e. not just a character stream, but addressing individual keystates.
- Support for loading πKey via HEN.
- Improved configurability, for instance different keymapping in the CTRL plugin.

—-”this psp is king of all psp, all hail psp”—-
finally!
Well I think you will need to rewire an old PC keyboard or something to the headphone jack on your PSP which is also used to plug in your PSP remote.
re cheep keyboards :
best is ir palm keyboard 39-69 $
OMG thanks guys for not being smacktards with the comments.
this is definatly usefull, and is already being implimented into apps.
I started a thread to thank fanjita and harleyg here http://lan.st/showthread.php?t=878
Feel free to drop a thank you note where they will see it. ass hats with out ne thing good to say dont bother youll just get banned (mostlikely)
“OMG thanks guys for not being smacktards with the comments”
I don’t know what a ’smacktard’ is, but with a comment like that, you definitely take the smacktard cake.
Retard.
got a mirror? THATS a smack-tard…
lol… BURNED!!!
can’t wait to give this one a whirl! esp with the new AIM client released today (no way i’m going to get used to danzeff’s input keyboard)
is palm ir keyboard really the best application?
Well heres a link , its compact, sleek , wireless, cheep you tell me
javascript:NewNamedWindow(’/us/products/accessories/peripherals/3169WW.html’,'Accessory’,'600′,’390′,’0′)
broken link sorry , first item on this page

would the old webtv keyboards work? They are infrared and sell for 10 bucks or so on ebay. Otherwise, what is a proven palmir (or equiv ir keyboard) that is proven to work (I want to know before I buy). Also, has this worked well with the browser via internet?
i have oneof those internet tv keyboards and ant having much luck.
I havent got a clue wht make it is for a start so it will be trial and error. for now unless anyone else knows????
OMFG! i’ve waited vor somethiong like this, because im often out of my house and use my psp to chat in ICQ or MSN ;)
PSP = Playstation Portable. I don’t know people keep coming up with these crappy mods that defeats this purpose. Use things like this on home-systems or computers
i guess some of us get out a bit more than you and have the need to get on AIM to talk to these people called friends…
can you make a mod? can you make a non-crappy mod? people make mods for psp to show their talent to the world and what other hardware can be integrated with PSP’s don’t take the word “Portable” too seriously
why does it matter if i make mods? This is a place where people can express their opinions, positive or negative. It is through criticism, for the large majority, in which most things in this world are improved upon, including homebrew
You moron! Being able to use keyboard on PSP is a great leap in technology. Now you can have fully functional Amiga and C64 with music programs and such fitted in your pocket, that probably sounds stupid to you because you are just a lamer. For me this the greatest revolution since the laptop, and for that I thank Fanjita & Harleyg!
Is it wrong to want to be able to connect a foldable portable keyboard (no larger than the PSP when folded) to your PSP, so that you have a convenient and efficient input solution when on the move?
I can now carry a PSP and keyboard combination in my jacket pockets, and use the web browser effectively with it when I need to. (By effectively, I mean entering a complex URL in under 5 seconds).
Seems worth it to me.
Dont take these guys too seriously… you could release a mod that makes gold spew out of the headphone jack and these guys would bitch about it. Thanks for the hard work David.
well i guess some of us actually get out and talk to our friends, rather then use AIM
LOL… like ur doing now
you can play DJ MAX like O2Jam now :D
finally!!! been waiting for something like this! my psp is almost perfect now! great work guys! hail to u both!
Anyone know anywhere on a UK site where I can get a Palm or the Targnt IR keyboard? not expensive
See http://www.noobz.eu for a link to cheap Targus IR keyboards on Amazon.
Thanks Fanjita!
Ordered homefully arrive Friday :D
Nice work Fanjita!
mick,
Nothing wrong with stating your opinion on something but the problem is calling something crap because it doesn’t work for you just makes you look like a jackass!
Sheeeeeesh…. some peoples kids!
does anybody here knows how to mod a normal keyboard and use it with psp remote socket? help!
nice work fanjita!! keep up the scene.. this is my best app in hombrew history!!!
mick
if you think you don’t have any use for it, why ask? just go away and ignore this thing. devs and modders don’t have to prove that everything they do is worth your time.
Fanjita / harleyg:
GOOD WORK!
this is awesome!
this + OpenOffice port = jesus christ spooge
….someone write a USB Joypad driver!
does anyone have a pinout so you can make one to use the serial port????
can a modded usb keyboard be usewd on this or does it have to be ir or remote jack.
read the post
“Supported inputs are various infra-red keyboards and serial I/O via the PSP’s headphone socket. “
oh srry, anyway heres a link to a roll-up keyboard http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4694726.
Thank you guys!! Whenever I’m about to give up on the PSP just like Sony does you guys show up to allow it to go that step further… Who knows… we might no longer need a laptop to take notes in Uni…
Guys, someone please answer: has anyone gotten the palm universal wireless keyboard to work right yet? It’s strange, because it works in the test app (I even tried switching the type back to targus, and it wouldn’t work in the test app, confirming that i had the settings right before). I’ve been waiting for this thing for a long time, and I don’t want to have to try to resell my keyboard and get the targus one :(
mick the dick, blow me. If you dont want to use a mod, then don’t and just stfu. I dont have a laptop but I take this to the bedroom with me to surf the web, with a keyboard it would be that much cooler. Just because you can’t think of a use because your too busy making worthless coments doesn’t me no one else can. If you used half as much of your brain for something besides showing your ignorance, you might get a clue someday. Too bad dumbasses like you can only know how to talk shit about people who develop mods. I dont get why people waste their time putting down people who make mods. I guess it’s just jealousy or ignorance.
I can smell an office type application on the PSP coming such as a wordprocessor type app using the IR keyboard!
hey guys this works best on my CF so try it on that
http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/input/8193/anyone think of trying to use this seems to have usb input
Hey all… I own the slim version. has anyone succeeded to connect a serial keyboard to this little baby? The slim version unfortunately does not have an IR port. :( Maybe we could add the IR ourselves…
Anyone? This really should be happening. The PSP is begging for a keyboard.
