PSP Steering Wheel Mod (Prototype)

Do you remember the PSP modder going by the name of Neubit? I sure do; back in February Neubit shared a clever modification that replaces your original PSP battery with 3 AAA’s. That said and done, and proven to work quite well, Neubit has returned with a new mod currently being prototyped — the PSP Steering Wheel!
Here’s it in action…
This is a mod-in-progress, i didnt wire up a connection jack yet, so there are wires hanging everywhere, but hey, it works, it’s cool, it’s new, its original, Enjoy! And stay tuned for updates

ok ok, so he has hooked up the horizontal variable resistance of a steering wheel to the analog stick, big woop, i mean who would really use a steering wheel with a PSP, wouldnt you just use a steering wheel with your PC or PS2 or something else that is already NOT PORTABLE, otherwise whats the point of having a PSP?

I play my psp at home, not only on the bus… so when im at my desk and i feel like usind a steering wheel why not, then i just unplug the psp and take it wherever else i need to

There are plenty of devices people buy that takes the portability out of the PSP. I carry mine with me everywhere, but I do most of my playing at home, with a line-out cable going to my desktop speakers. Portability isn’t always formost with the PSP, it works wherever you use it. It’s an interesting mod, IMO, I’d love to see more with it.
One thing, I did see a bit of lag on the video, between the time the wheel turned and the car responded. Is this a real problem, does it interfere too much with it?
For those of you wondering how was this achieved, well what Nuebit did was tap into the Potentiometer inside the racing wheel and wire it directly into the psp analog nub there is a slight problem with the pontentiometer as the resistence range it to high meaning you have to turn the wheel alot befor the resistance is low enough to send a responce to the psp. We are in the process of looking for a better potentiometer to provide a much faster response time we are thinking a 1K Ohm pot is the ideal range but we won’t know untill we get one
For additional information on the creation of external controllers simple start a new thread on our forum and we will be more then happy to get you started on a mod of your own.
regardless of portability, it’s still a cool mod. I bet many people sit on their couch and play PSP.

This has to be the coolest mod yet… I’ve got a 120$ wheel and pedal set, (usb AND serial connections). My psp spends 90 % of its time on my desk. The one thing that pissed me off about the psp was its approach at portability. Sony released basically nothing for psp @home use.

You know what I’d like to see? a tilt-sensitive mod, that you can basically turn your PSP into a steering wheel. somehow using the USB interface on top, as the input. now THAT would be a nifty mod.

its been done, look up connecting psp to hardrive. a device is used a medium between the two devices

i think the highest amount that the psp can actually use is only up to 8gb as of right now so he would be wasting ALOT of space.

It even says how the mod is being achieved and what is currently wrong with it and how they are trying to imporve it so stop complaining about how the mod is “useless”. They have a plan to make it better. For all those saying that this idea is stupid becuase it is not portable, you are right in the sense that it is not portable. However, it most certainly is not useless. Many people, including myself, use the psp at home. I know I use it sometimes while laying down before I go to bed. Also, may people here are saying that they would rather play with their ps2 instead. Maybe you guys should be more considerate of those who do not own a ps2 and think wow, this is useful for those who do not own a ps2 but still want a good racing experience. I for one know that this mod, once completed, will be awesome in conjunction with the new grant turismo being released for the psp. In accord with that, people who want to play the new gt but do not want to buy a ps3 and a steering wheel can instead buy gt for the psp and use a steering wheel thanks to this mod. So please do not say this is a terrible mod and dis acidmods for all their hard work. I am sick and tired of the constant flaming. I cannot believe active members of the psp homebrew community are actually flaming a great developer who is only enhancing the community. You should all be ashamed.

instead of expensive LCD monitors for your ride, maybe making psp’s as monitors for your car/suv will be a great mod. + you can detach it and play wireless with your passengers (when you are parked not driving ok?)

You people misunderstand the point. Sure, a racing wheel for a portable is a silly idea, but the concept works. Who knows, what will be next. Perhaps the possibility to turn any webcam into a PSP camera? The possibilities are endless.
