Been wanting to write a new PSP application or game, but lacked the motive to? Want to to have the chance to win free stuff? Want to see a bunch of new homebrew applications? Then this contest is for you!
PSP-Hacks is having their first competition of 2007, and I’m hoping for a good turn-out!
Rules:
1) Must be your own homebrew. No improving or updating other people’s homebrew.
2) Must start from scratch. Must not be something that you made awhile back. If it was posted somewhere else already, it doesn’t count.
3) No copying other people’s work. Your source must be included with your work to verify/see if it is a modified work of someone else’s. (You don’t have to include your source code until the end of the competition.) (This rule will likely be changed.)
4) You may post your Homebrew for feedback and you can continue to improve your work up until April 29, 2007 when the competition ends
5) Can be either a game or application that runs on the PSP.
6) If you are creating an application for the PSP, the application must be in eboot form in order for it to be entered in the competition.
7) No LUA!
8) Must not enter your homebrew in another competition while entering in this competition. If you enter your homebrew in this competition, then it must not be entered in another site’s competition.
9) Must implement one of these splash screens (can be found in forums) created by …SHAD0W… into your homebrew entry.
And now, for the part that everyone wants to see… the prizes!
1) Modded PS2 with the DMS4 pro mod chip and a 80 gig hard drive inside plus an internet adapter added on the back of the PS2. More info on the DMS4 pro mod chip here.

sweet, to bad a can’t code for my life
Im not programmer, but i have some good ideas for other people to develop, and i hope someday to see acomplished:
1- what about MAME? it was discontinued as far as i remember, the original idea of separating games between trademarks (namco, sega, konami, etc.) was a good idea, but the mame versions i saw didnt work properly in most of the good games (like super hang on, outrun, TMNT,….) SO IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA IF SOMEONE CAN TRY TO PORT MAME, AND I THINK IS POSIBLE, BECAUSE CPS1-2 AND NEOGEO ARE CURRENTLY RUNNING GREAT.
2- If some homebrew like IRSHELL Were able to run files from a hard drive via usb, COULDNT BE POSSIBLE TO MAKE A HOMEBREW WITH ALL FUNCTIONS FOR A PSP TO RUN FILES FROM A PORTABLE USB HD? THAN WOULD BE A DREAM! AND A GRAT SOLUTION TO MEMORY STICK’S LIMITED SPACE, AND FOR PEOPLE WHO DOESNT HAVE A PC OR JUST WANT TO PLAY A LOT OF GAMES FAR FROM HOME.
3-HOW ABOUT PORTING SEGA CD, ATARI XE, 3DO, AND SEGA SATURN?
4- HOW ABOUT A MEDIA PLAYER HOMEBREW THAT COULD RUN MPG VIDEOS WITH A COMPLETE INTERFACE? (PSPLAYER IS GOOD, BUT LACKS THE PROPER INTERFACE)
5- IF SOMEONE COULD PORT PC DOOM, THERE ARE OTHER GREAT GAMES FROM THAT TIME THAT COULD BE CONVERTED TO PSP FORMAT, LIKE PRINCE OF PERSIA 2, KINGS QUEST 6.
6- DONT DENY IT! YOU ARE AS PERVERTED AS I AM! HOW ABOUT DEVOLOPMENT OF ADULT PUZZLE GAMES? LIKE TETRIS, COLUMNS AND QIX BASED ONES, THERE WAS SOME GOOD ONES IN MAME, LUMINES IS A GREAT FUN PSP GAME, BUT HOW ABOUT MAKING SOME OTHER PUZZLES, WITH MORE INCENTIVATION TO STAY PLAYING?
AND ADULT FIGHTING GAMES TOO! LIKE MUGEN HENTAI, VARIABLE GEO (ADULT VERSION), AND A LOT OF OTHER IDEAS!
7- WELL THAT’S MY IDEAS, I CAN ONLY HOPE THE BEST LUCK TO ALL INTERESTED PEOPLE TO ENTER IN OUR PSP HACKS COMPETITION!
I, being who I am, will probably try coding something…

A “compressor reader” so i can fit more stuff on my psp’s memory stick it would be able to read any or almost any compressed file.
Buy a bigger memory stick 4Gb or even 8GB…but a compressor would be nice.
I am also planning to get a 4GB stick soon. Tired of 2GB.

Not for nothing… but you can also run VNC on your PSP. Why install the whole OS when you can just remote into one??

Why is this rule there? Lua is perfectly fine as a coding language. I use it because I can’t download all the stuffs needed to setup a dev enviroment for C++
I’m with you dude, I can’t download cggwin or whatever because I have dial-up and its really big! :( However, I found devkitPSP version 9 and it’s not that big and I just downloaded it at night while I was asleep and I got it, it works fine… but I don’t agree with you about Lua, I really don’t like Lua for some reason :/

I would like to see a torrent client, or a psp zip decompreser… That would be useful, and I also say stop the atari emulation, I think there are enough allready… use your talent wisely young coders…
man you guys really need to appreciate the apps more. not ALL of them are going to be things you want to use, but that doesnt mean someone ELSE wont be thrilled to play an old Atari game. I know I am, and I’m glad Zx-81 is still out there doing what he loves to do. Disrespecting such homebrew apps really doesnt solve anything or help anyone.
There already IS a zip opener for the PSP. It’s part of the file browser in either one or both of these apps— IR Shell and PSPDA (i think thats what its called). ALSO (and dont think i’m ‘yelling’, sometimes big letters are just big letters. its time for the internet community to move past that)…ALSO, there is a zip opener you can download as a stand alone app I think, but I’m not sure what it’s called. PSPZip maybe? The two apps I mentioned, for the one that you can unzip files with, it also comes with something to open RAR files too.
The torrent client is the best idea for an app EVER. I already requested Limewire, but someone told me it wouldnt be a useful port to have, because it would run too slowly for the download speeds or something. I’d imagine this might also be true for a basic torrent app. But i dont know, and it still doesnt matter anyway. Not all files are huge and some of us have a lot of patience anyway lol

I’d love to see an app that doesnt appear until you press a user defined key combination and then, a second layer of security which is a user defined password to access the app. Once the app opens, it can be a shell or something thats like a vault of invisible files, apps, movies, etc.
You can use a file browser to decide which of your files is invisible or not, and assign specific passwords to each file, or a universal password that opens all of them, or one at a time. Also a way of spoofing the amount of free memory remaining might be cool, and a way of spoofing the memory info for individual files so that you can have a movie clip on there at lets say 5mb but make it look like its 500mb.
I think this would be a very cool app to have around if anyone is interested in putting it together. I would do it for the competetion, but I dont know a thing about programming. and besides, if i did I’d be more tempted to make a game about smacking babies with hammers. lol

i know that all homebrew are welcome but in my opinion i think that we should see better things in this competition than just atari emu

I have to say this is a goodass idea. there are a lot of talented (not myself) coders out there that could really shake things up. There are a lot of cool ideas I’d love to see but don’t know if they’re possible so I’mma just wait and see what comes outta this. Good luck everyone!

have you guys seen the news on bbc that media have got the psp and homebrew and popular hackers like dark alex in the spotlight. wanna c go to psp culture and scroll down till you find where it has something like psp hacking making the news.
SOMEBODY NEEDS TO MAKE A DJ PROGRAM FOR THE PSP, A GOOD IMPORT OF A GOOD DJ PROGRAM WOULD BE VIRTUAL DJ, think about it, remix ur own 2pac, jay-z, dmx, snoop or what ever on ur psp. creat a bpm list of songs before u start mixing, maby even a built in bpm anylizer, its a briliant way to mix on the road or at a party, maby u can even get a couple of bitches will doing some live dj’ing. peace.

Yeah.. I am having problems doing that with my pc setup. Since the psp is only 1 setup with the sane cards and what ever it should prove to be more useful. But iI heard somewhere that due to the psp’s hardware this sin’t possible.
A working ps2 emulator would be huge…. The psp has enough power to run it, I’m sure of that.

MORE PRO AUDIO APPS PLEASE! PSP Rhythm ROCKS. Let’s see more stuff like that. Maybe a simple track editor based on small wav files or mp3s even. Something like Fruity loops or Reason.

does anyone remeber a game called Gravity Force? little triangle ships, powerups and destructable scenery, would make for alot of fun with wifi multiplayer…if i knew how to code this would be the first thing id write…hope someone would perhasp take this up :) if anyone remebers it that is, nehow godspeed and goodluck!

i really want 2 see a dual shock usb controller port for psp,… so i can play in my car using a car stand, and regular ps controller,…
cause i’m getting tired after playing after an hour, cause the weight of psp.
Anything useful app wise for a PSP I think would certenly be a paintshop for PSP, As I am a designer, this could really help, there are paint programs but they are just not going to compare yet.
A emulator ported had to be a Saturn but it wud be near impossible due to the dule core processor within it, Even PC’s have problem emulating a saturn.
A game made or ported, please something to do with the Sims :)

Looks like someone is getting rid of all there psp stuuff
Why not make a “universal remote controll” that automatically scans for the right IR frequencies of the TV/VCR/DVD/whatever? I would give my vote to that app! =) As the existing IR applications are really buggy and sucks.
I would love to see a DJ application, were you can mix .mp3’s =)
1- I’d like to see something that reverses the inputs on the speakers so they can be used as microphones.
2- something that can be used as a personal recorder, or even better, a 4-track or something with 2 stereo tracks, or even 2 mono tracks, that lets you import samples to a midi grid and copy and paste them, and record audio on the second track, so you can record vocals anywhere, to stuff you may have created on PSP Rhythm or PSP Kick or whatever.
3- it would be really cool to see some spy apps on this thing, maybe something that lets you hook up a web cam or mic and then have the PSP run on its own so it connects to the nearest WIFI access point and sends out a feed of audio or video or both, to a remote server. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME
