Custom Firmware 1.53 Released

Yup, another custom firmware revision, and nope — it’s not from Dark_AleX. This particular release comes from developer eiffel56 and is sure to please.
Custom firmware 1.53 is built on 1.50’s underlying weaknesses with additional goodies that you see below. Enjoy the simplicity!
- Recovery Menu
- Boot Menu
- Integrated uxMB
- You can start 1.00 style EBOOTS
- You can hide corrupt data icons
- You can start ISO/DAX files
- You can load your own plugins(PRX)
- Autoboot EBOOTs at startup
- Never turn off the backlight in XMB
Installation and usage notes from the readme (readmeeng.txt):
Just copy all files from MS_ROOT to your Memory Stick and run the installer. WARNING: It could BRICK your PSP. You do this on your own risk! The installer can Update any 1.50, 1.50 Custom Firmware POC, 1.50 EE-A.
Just hold R while booting up your PSP to enter the recovery menu. From here you can unbrick your PSP and set some options.
To activate the boot menu, hold L while booting. From here you can start the XMB, iRShell and an own UI.
Note for iRShell: You need an unkxploitet 2.xx Version. Simply copy everything in flash0:/irshell.To show the uxMB menu, press select in the XMB. From here you can activate USB, start ISO/DAX files and so on.
Note for ISO/DAX loading: You need an UMD inserted to use this Feature. If a game wont load, hook the file in XMB(X Button) and try to start it via MPH Game Launcher. To load plugins, simply put the path to them in the ms0:/PSP/SYSTEM/plugins.txt.
Note: if you’re using an OE custom firmware, you’ll need to flash back to 1.50 [via the recovery console] first. Then run the supplied 1.53 installer. Good luck!

I feel the same way, good job non the less but 3.10 OE has more features like NO UMD and being able to play PSX Eboot’s.
Good start though maybe the next release will implement these kind of feature’s.

Er… NO one who is knowledgable in homebrew, well, not just a “SPOON FEED ME HOW TO DO THIS” person with firmware and customization uses 3.10.. We’re all using 3.03 OE-C. Its a powerhouse.

my thoughts exactly.. (off topic) has anyone been able to get testdrive promo to run on 3.10 oe ?? if so did you have to do something special … also how big or what release group version do you have
i get the images in the xmb… i select the game to start it then the screen goes black the memory light flashes a few times then just when you expect the game to start it stays black no sound and no picture … i tried with umd and no umd options and with both kernals can anyone help me or give me a clue whats wrong?? (once again sorry for off topic discussion)
I know this was an issue with Ratchet & Clank also. You might want to set the following settings in Recovery mode: 1.) Use NO-UMD (currently: Enabled) and 2.) Speed in UMD/ISO (currently: 266). Works fine for R&C, might be the solution for testdrive promo also!
wtf…it worked fine for me with no compression, but not at all when compressed………..
…I THINK this is a cool release for a number of reasons………..
1, we have a new coder able to make custom firmwares.
2, soon these firmwares will all be merged to make the best firmware for each, some dont need wifi & want more games but others want more useful tools like wifi & less gameing ability.
meself……i got 2 psps myself, 1 for games (3.10) & one for messing with xmb (3.03).
gonna buy another for this today if i get time & put it thru th shops books as an asset (customer entertainment ;-)
u need more than one psp to learn from same as we need more than one developer, sony has teams of em we got a few (ours are better by far)
as with xbox pretty soon youll be able to totally customise firmwares but we cant expect all this from Dark_Alex, not when users are constantly screaming for downgraders.
eiffel56 is bringing a sorta merged (1.50 with recovery mode??) firmware which is a big enuf step in my opinion….how about if u could downgrade to recover to a customised 1.53 rather than miserable looking plain old 1.50 xmb….THATD DO FE ME!
if you’re thinking about Test Drive Unlimited, yes i’ve got it and it works perfectly…. use 3.03OE-C… I’m thinking about the TDU, that you can download a week ago or so….

Pointless? Why is this pointless?? The more ppl out there who come up with custom firmwares the better for the whole community. We cant just rely on one single person (as alsmost everyone is doing already…) Imagine if DAX steps out from the scene, then what are you gonna do when Sony keeps spitting out official firmwares?
I applaud innovation. The more developers out there, the better, imho (even if they result in different custom firmwares). My only hope is that through all this innovation, standards are developed so that there’s cross compatability in homebrew. It’s better to work together (standard formats) than work apart (proprietary formats).

Dark_AleX deserves his props for sure, but this is NOT pointless at all. Having competition (if you can call it that) is always good because it keeps people from being stagnant and forces developers to constantly be innovative. That can only mean better things for us!

i think its cool to know we have developers out there working on their own projects obviously the new oe firmwares are better, but i dont see why this cant develop into something greater, anything that a develper worked on for the psp community has potential

i’m at 1.5, and staying there. Using OE was far too confusing to use, and too much of a hassle, to install. Not to mention the flash space. I’ll stick with 1.5(3), thank you very much :D
I’m using this fw right now. It’s actually quite nice, especially since I don’t use PSX emulation, or the like, that would cause me to upgrade to 3.x OE

At the end of the day, if you have two Custom firmware developers, then they may communicate with idea…one may come up with a better idea than the other. In the future we may have Dax 65’s Custom firmware….

This is great that more developers are starting custom firmwares. It seems like DAX (or any custom firmware developer) might be more motivated to make their CFW the best if there’s some real competition! However, I don’t think a 1.50 CFW will be too much competition for a 3.XX one, as 3.00+ has PSX, Browser, you can load higher FW games, and a lot more icons (which you can use to make do a custom action) I hope someone else makes a 3.XX CFW with DAX files support… in my opinion, one thing 3.10 OE is missing that it really needs is DAX support!

is it possible to use this to recover from semi bricked 3.xx oe firmwares? I like the idea of 1.50 with recovery mode.
Well, you’d have to first recover to an official 1.50 FW, but after you have 1.50, you can update to this. You can’t recover straight to this because it says you can only upgrade from 1.50.
I always say if you cant do it yourself then you have no reason to bitch…I give this dev my full support…who can remember before dark alex came when the maker of isoloader(fastloader or whatever it was called) quit ppl freaked out and when dark alex was thinking about quitting you pussies wined like girls with skinned knees… so suport this dev you never know when d.a. may shut down his computer for good …. so many wanna push the noobs down.. i see it in the irc chats or forums.. someone asks a question and they are met with silence or a snyde remark… remember even D.A. was a noob sometime.. the noob you help today may be the person who writes your next firmware.. even though he accidentially upgraded his psp or something equally dumb…

Any sort of indie dev’ng is a *good* thing people. Where’s the love? Instead of mentioning why 1.53 *isn’t* 3.10, why not offer some positive feedback?
(Personally, I think it’d be smart to stick an EE (Eiffel Edition) or whatever at the end of the firmware, just to distinguish it from the real 1.53s of the world)
