USB Mod v4b for FW 3.03 & 3.10 OE

greg | February 12, 2007

Stemming from TheBuzzer’s original development on a USB Mod for SE-C, “smashly” has made a slight tweak or two resulting in 3.03 & 3.10 OE compatibility.

This plugin is incredibly useful if, a) you spend most of the time playing PSP in your tighty-whiteys next to your PC, and b) you have a small memory stick (don’t let that get ya down). When used in conjunction with a tool such as USBhostfs, you’ll be able to play ISOs off your PC’s hard disk over a USB connection. Of course this isn’t very practical when traveling — unless you have a laptop handy… Whatever the case may be, enjoy!

PSPSwampy’s install guide:

  1. Put the MS_ROOT files from the archive onto your PSProot (X:\)
  2. Go into 3.10 OE-A recovery (Hold R on cold bootup)
  3. Choose Plugins –>
  4. Enable usbhostfs.prx in both VSH and GAME
  5. Enable buzzusbvsh.prx in VSH
  6. Choose Back
  7. Choose Advanced –>
  8. Choose ‘Toggle USB (flash0)’
  9. *Warning - you MUST do this next part correctly, or you are likely to BREAK your PSP*
  10. On your PC, copy the file ‘vshctrl.prx’ from the ‘Flash0\kn’ folder and paste it onto your PSP’s Flash0 in the folder ‘X:\kn\’. (where X:\ is FLASH0 of your PSP)
  11. Run usbhost (or usblink etc) on your PC
  12. Exit from PSP recovery
  13. Now to use you can hold square and it will switch between usb and memorystick. (To make ‘memory stick’ refresh itself, go to the save data section than go back to memory stick.)

Download:
USB Mod v4b (includes PRX’s for 3.03 OE-C, 3.10 OE-A & OE-A’)
USBhostfs (for Windows, Mac, and Linux)

On a side note, I had to recompile USBhostfs for the Mac with the included source, otherwise it wouldn’t work for me. If you’re in the same boat, just fire up your terminal and change to the ’src’ directory. Run ‘make’ and you should be good to go.

And another note — this module will not function with “No UMD” enabled (via the recovery console).

people who don’t have big mem cards. Or people who can’t fit that 1.5 gig game on there 1 gig memstick. It uses the usb to play iso games. Very useful for late commers that only have the 32 megbit mem stick. Basically LOTS OF PEOPLE CARE SO SHUT UP!

@Aaron M

This is what the recovery mode is for. What I’ve done is made a COMPLETE backup of Flash0 and Flash1 after installing the custom firmware, that way if anything does go wrong I have a backup to fall back on.

This works 100% just get the usb host make iso folder where you extract it and throw iso in there
and they show up right in game after hitting square
i tryed all the other usb mods and this is the first to work for me just make sure you have a umd in if you get the error and have no umd DISABLED.
you can also make other psp folder im not sure an old usbhost i had made them automatically but
its pretty much the same concept as the psp so if you wanna run homebrew you prolly just make a game and gam150 303 ect ect..

GOOD STUFF A+++ THANKS!! Appreciated

He told you already. Wherever you put usbhostfs on your computer, make an ISO folder and put your ISO files there. You can also make a PSP folder with GAME in it, etc. Just make your usbhost folder look like the root of your memstick would. It’s like having a monstrous ass mem stick. Such as, I’d have a 160gb memstick and a 60gb. :)

i’m using an older set of files posted a while back, and the usbhosts files i have been using with devhook 0.46 before upgrading to 3.10 oe.
it doesn’t write to flash, the only drawback is after you run it once, and then activate no umd mode, and then go back to umd mode, it freezes when trying to load the umd. deleting the created .bin file in the plug-in folder and running it again fixes the issue. it’s not a big deal to do, and you don’t have to worry about writing to flash.

“can´t run the game (80020321)”
2 resolves for this:
1) Recovery->Configuration->Use NO-UMD = Disabled
2) Make sure you have a UMD game disc in PSP before launching a game! (Demo Disc will do).

Mod does not support running games without a umd in the drive!

- source: xmb-psp , WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not even….

NEWS SOURCE = PSP-HACKS FORUM !!!!!!!!
I should know I f’n started the thread…
Have a look inside the USB_Mod_v4b_For_3.10_OE-A’.rar and read the readme… see the dates I updated the readme’s
1st time was when 310 OE-A came out , the 2nd time when 310 OE-A’ (aka 310 OE-A2)

1st posted @ maxconsole , then I posted the updated archive @ ps3news and banned for spamming … yet they repacked my updated and changed the readme, I know this due to the folder in the 310 OE-A is the folder I renamed “Backup_310_OE-A_unedited” ..

So as far as I’m concerned the “USB_Mod_v4b_For_3.10_OE-A’.rar” tells the truth of where and when it originated support for 310 OE-A originally got updated BY ME!!!!

Since ppl don’t get it right in the first place ..
I’m not releasing the bugfixed prx’s I have now compiled from scratch.
Bugfixes:
128 iso’s only show (now should support upto 1000, only tested upto 150 , that’s all the iso’s I’ve got. Could be a limitation of how many items can be listed under ms in xmb, still working it out)

When USB plugins are disabled in recovery then iso’s don’t show on the ms (now iso’s on ms show as it should when usb plugins dissabled)

added support for PS1 Eboots to show via usb.
(still can’t launch a PS1 eboot via usb , black screens when launched, but at least they show correctly, it’s a start.)

Few other various tweaks as well…..
I’m doing for myself from here on in days.

between enabling & disabling u need to refresh icons by entering & leaving save data utility

I’ve tried that too MickMog, when im looking @ my computer and then try to run a game, which all my games do come up in the game menu, i noticed that the usb sync seems to keep clicking on then off.. you know that sound your comptuer makes when you usb is either connected or disconnected? well it does that.. if yours is working, maybe you can verify that it does the same, because maybe its the usb driver or something wrong with the pc end, even know everything seems okay.. thanks again for the quick responce

sounds like it is the driver, or plugged into a usb1 device rather than usb2
i use a small app called “Yet Another PSP Tool” which seems to work a bit better than usbhosts on its own, its tidier too cos u can browse for directory.
if it should connect when u turn psp on to begin with or start usbhosts, then when u click ona game it should disconnect then connect once again, then it shouldnt disconnect again after that
im having probs with this latest one but the OE-A version works a treat
the only 2 files that were updated in the OE-A(2) update were the same 2 files were playing with here…by going back to the original kn files your going back to 3.03 OE-A or OE-A(2)

e.g, just replace the modified files with the un-modified from USB_Mod_v4b_For_3.10_OE-A_For_PSP.zip will take u back to 3.10 OE_A

to read ms0 iso u have to first disable the plugin with the square button then go to save data utility,
to read usbhosts0 iso u need to enable it (u cansee it pop up in usbhosts) then refresh icons in save data utility, i got it working on a 3.10 OE_A Jap1000 psp with seriously customed firmware, and a 3.10OE_A2……..
also, jSPENSE…does your firmware show up as 3.10 OE_A or OE_A’
(just wondering if u got the updated file here)

yeah, u need to install drivers, should be called “libusb0.sys” its in the package i downloaded earlier

BY THE WAYYYY, THIS HAS BEEN UPDATED SINCE FIRST POSTED!!!,
the original post was for 310 OE not OE-A(2), if you downlaoded the first package it wont work, the updated rar package has all 3 mod versions in 3 seperate rars inside, and its 206kbs.
please keep track of your posts mods or we cant keep track of which mods are which…if u know how i mean hehe
i mean this latest is still version 4b? how confusing?

jSPENCE, sounds like youve downloaded the first version & applied it to 3.10 OE_A(2) get this new package. it shows signs of working but wont, like i said above, its been updated since it was first posted so now there are 3 rars in 1 file rather than 1 rar, check it out jSPENSE, just copy the 2 new files in & itll make your psp a vers OE_A(2)

Wow, this is very nice :D congrats.

Is there any word on whether there’s going to be a wi-fi version of this? or at least a version that takes homebrew and PSX eboots?

I’m one of the lucky ones with a large memory stick (4GB) but I’m a lazy sod and can’t be bothered to copy games to my card (and I’m usually near my PC when playing games) so this is ideal!

I guess it depends on the game that you are trying to load. Majority of the games work but there are some with problems. I tried Outrun 2006 and it’s loading the menu fine. But when its starts loading the actual game it hangs. Maybe there are games that really won’t work with this.

Just read the readme man, I followed it and it worked great! Basically have the ISO folder (and the ISO’s inside that folder) inside the USBhost folder which you put anywhere in your computer (Desktop, C: drive, Program Files etc..) run USB hosts, for the memstick side, have the SEPlugins folder in the root of the PSP. Follow the rest of the instructions in the readme for activating the Files from the SEplugins folder on the memstick. It’s very straight foward, got it working on first try, and I never played ISOs from the computer before either. Trust me, about 10mins and following the readme step by step for the version psp you got, and it will work! (I had 3.03OE-C too)

80020148 same thing here…..

This APP sucks along with the rest of the USB sharing apps out there…. It would be nice to see someone like Dark Alex include standard a USB sharing APP intergrated into the Firmware….. Simply said I havent seen many people who can get this to work, and personally i feel anyone who has posted saying they got it to work is . Lying 2. Trolling to make the app seem like a save all or 3. running 3.03

Honestly I have not been able to get any USB sharing app to work correctly, and Im not a newb…

Developers need to start writing quality code rather then competing to see who can get the app released quickest….

garbage is garbage regardless of who released it first….

try an get it right in one click an it wont work cus i gotta REAAAAD first, im tired an u just gimme GOOD reason to get me head down!

hold on….why would anyone say it works & all describe it the same, even the same game errors?
like we dont have better things to do?

yeah that makes sense… have you read the comments ??? 99% of the people who have tried using this report it dosent work…..

The other 1% wound up half bricking there PSP’s

Not saying this APP is worthless… saying that it isnt working well enough to use reliably …. apps that work this shabby shouldnt be released until they are a bit more stable… Apps like this cost people time and money

OK for the people that are reading this guide

PSPSwampy’s install guide:

1. Put the MS_ROOT files from the archive onto your PSProot (X:\)
2. Go into 3.10 OE-A recovery (Hold R on cold bootup)
3. Choose Plugins –>
4. Enable usbhostfs.prx in both VSH and GAME
5. Enable buzzusbvsh.prx in VSH
6. Choose Back
7. Choose Advanced –>
8. Choose ‘Toggle USB (flash0)’
9. *Warning - you MUST do this next part correctly, or you are likely to BREAK your PSP*
10. On your PC, copy the file ‘vshctrl.prx’ from the ‘Flash0\kn’ folder and paste it onto your PSP’s Flash0 in the folder ‘X:\kn\’. (where X:\ is FLASH0 of your PSP)
11. Run usbhost (or usblink etc) on your PC
12. Exit from PSP recovery
13. Now to use you can hold square and it will switch between usb and memorystick. (To make ‘memory stick’ refresh itself, go to the save data section than go back to memory stick.

He forgot to mention that you are also suppose to do this

10. On your PC, copy the file ’systemctrl.prx’ from the ‘Flash0\kn’ folder and paste it onto your PSP’s Flash0 in the folder ‘X:\kn\’. (where X:\ is FLASH0 of your PSP)

this was suppose to be step 10 and step 9 was copying the file ‘vshctrl.prx’ but if you were dumb enough not to read the readme note and not install that then you would get wierd things like game cant start ect.

In order for this to work you need to have
a) A folder where you installed usbhost called iso

You need to install the PSP type B drivers to your PC first. Google these. Then, download USBHostfs.exe and place it anywhere (I recommend the root of your hard drive) and create an ISO folder in the same location. Place your ISOs in the ISO folder.
Install the PSP Tybe B drivers.
Run usbhost.
Press Square to enable usbhost mode on your PSP.
Have fun.

Also, I agree with Denz. It’d be nice to see DAX adding the .rco file to a future firmware and an option to enable “USB mode” to disable all other plugins and enable these. But, 3.10 sucks so far in comparison to 3.03. Shifty POPs compatiblity, generic icon hell, etc. Please, DAX, find a way to fix these issues. I miss your firmwares only getting BETTER. :’(

This shit is bogus, it doesnt work. I got the TA-082 drivers and installed them 100%, I copyed the 2 .prx files into flash0, I copied all the seplugins files to the root in the /seplugins/ folder like it says, I enabled the prxs and have No-UMD disabled. My ISOs are in /usbhostfs/iso/ on my PC harddrive. Ive refreshed the memory stick 10 times now after loading the program. NOTHING WORKS. Is there an alternative WORKING version?

Just for everyone who’s done everything correctly but the games don’t show up… it’s the ISO and ISOSplit folder in ur Memstick. Delete them and you’ll be ALL fine, I guess it will only show ISO folder and if u want it to work u have to give up the ones in ur memstick. At least that’s what i found out.

PLEASE HELP! My psp was working fine with 3.10-A2, until I tried to installed the USB MOD v4b. After I installed the USB MOD v4b, my psp wouldn’t boot again. When I tried to power up, the power (green) light on for 30 secs then went off by itself. I tried power so many times but still got the same result. However, I can still get into the Recover Mode. Thanks for your help in advance.

find the recovery folder for OE custom firmware. Toggle USB in the recovery mode, copy and paste the recovery folder to your GAME folder. press the recovery option in the recovery mode (you know, where you see an option that looks like a directory). If you cant find the recovery folder then your on your own.

I saw some posts above regarding same issue. Even tried replacing the prx with OE-A version (my psp is OE-A’ (A2)) as one of the above post suggested. but still same problem. It may not be this usbhost issue because I have same problem with memstick iso.(NOUMD enable without umd disc will give me error) Any input wiould be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!
