PSP 3xAAA Battery Mod

greg | February 3, 2007

This is pretty cool and totally MacGyver-like…

-Neubit-, over in the acidmods forum, has posted a tutorial illustrating the steps to replace your original PSP battery with 3 AAA
batteries –

PSP 3xAAA Battery Mod

The PSP battery was opened up and the original battery was taken out, two wires were soldered to the +/- points on the battery circuit board. No resistors were used. The 3 AAA batteries were fitted inside the battery case and connected to the previously soldered wires. Simple enough?

Very simple! I could actually see this mod serving a useful purpose when traveling and there is no time or wall outlet nearby to provide a sufficient charge — walk into any convenience store, pick up 3 AAA batteries, and place them in your newly modified battery casing. It’s a great alternative to those [expensive] longer-lasting battery replacements out there.

It has AAA written right on there.

This seems like a rather useless mod to me.

I saw something like this being sold at future shop sometime ago. Went there to buy a spare battery for the psp, seemed like a good idea, but it said that it gave like 3 hours more of battery life, but it didn’t list on what setting that 3 hour would be. It would probably be less than 2 hours when playing a game or something…

Haha - nice mod though, just not convinced about the power consumption.

you can actually rig up a system to plug AA batteries into the power outlet so it charges the psp batt…i’d rather use that than this…that way you arent messing too much with the internals and to take it off you simply unplug it from the power port

I saw an actual $10 replacement battery that took AA batteries from Best Buy I think.

No sense in modding this unless your battery completely fails.

If you could fit 3 2700Mah batteries in this, it would give you very long run time.

AAA batteries don’t go that high, AAs do. I have an Energizer Ni-MH in front of me and it says 900Mah.

2007-02-05 18:26:48

Your wrong, do research before you make comments. Sony has their own rechargable battery line, the AAA batteries are infact, 2700mah.

AAA batteries(3) - $5.69
Finding out that you just blew your money and could have used a car to charge your psp instead. - Priceless

For everything else theres an extra battery

sony official battery =
3.6 v at 1800 mAh (1.8 Ah)
PSP consumption = 5v at 1.2A
ok what this mean is the battery can provide 1.8 Ampere at 3.6V for 1 hour.
At the rated consumption, the battery will last 1.8/1.2 = 1.5 hour.
Now if you run 3 AA NIMH 2900 mAh battery,
you chain them (in series) and you get
1.5v x 3 = 4.5v at 2900 mAh x 3 = 8700 mAh (8.7 Ah)
now 8.7 / 1.5A = 5.8 hour
You tell me this is useless? guys… this last way longer than any battery sony can provide you, in fact 3 AA battery can equal 8.7 / 1.8 = 4.833
yes 3 AA battery can replace having almost 5 official battery.
Stop saying this is useless, it’s great, cause Sony Battery sucks, and there is reason why PSP was downclock, this is to reduce consumption cause well.. the battery blows.

Comment by calculation
2007-02-03 21:32:13

again why this is not useless… notice what i wrote on the top (don’t believe me, take off your battery, read the battery and read what’s on the sticker inside the case where battery goes)
Sony is retarded or something, the psp needs 5volt and they provide you with a 3.6V battery
Now electrically that’s fine, just well… it’s underpowered. Battery will be drained at an increased rate, i can’t for the life of me figure out why they don’t provide the 5v battery…

Comment by Bailey
2007-02-03 21:50:35

Was that calculation on 3 AA’s or AAA’s?

Neat mod anyway, ingenuity is never useless cocksuckers. And tell me where a car charger will come in handy on a 12hr plane trip, especially in economy class?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AA_battery
that’s on a AA battery, read that link, says
Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) AAs are also available in various capacities ranging from 1400 to 2900 mAh.

Comment by xriverfalconx
2007-02-03 22:15:50

Also, it’s not good to charge ANYTHING in your car. It throws too much power unless you have an amplifier to cut the power down. Now, you are driving around with a big box in your car and then your PSP is plugged into that. I don’t think your mommy and daddy will like that.

This is a great idea especially if you don’t have the cash to dish out a new battery. Great job!

a bit of error, i just figured it out. It’s not as much as I’ve calculated.
These picture only LOOK like it’s AA, but they are actually AAA (I took out some AA battery and realize there is no way you can fit 3 AAA in there).
AAA has is less developed as the AA battery, but regardless, even if you fit 2 x 2900 mAh = 5800 mAh is still waaaayyyy more than anything sony has provided so far. (Best I found is 3200 mAh)

I was just about to e-burn you for your retarded calculations but you recovered yourself lol.

I think this is neat/ useful but you’d have to be a moron to buy a battery/ use an old one to do this when there are already things like this that you can buy from the store. I’d only consider modding my older battery if it completely failed, in that case… doing this mod might not even make it work again.

Like I said (and others), you can pickup a nice, easy to use AAA battery “converter” for the psp at Best Buy for 10-15 clams. I’d look into it if you are interested in this.

u see tho, AAA is running on 1.2V usually. so 3 AAA is same thing as the factory Sony battery running at 3.6v

3×900mah nimh aaa’s = 3.6v 900mah, not 4.5v 2700mah, so, much less than an original psp battery.

Comment by Dragon
2007-02-04 08:15:08

not 3.6v 2700mah, even.
Batteries in serial multiply the voltage not ampere hours, batteries in parallel multiply the ampere rating not voltage.

Like some homebrew out there, good effort but flawed.

I rather use a USB battery box (4X 2700mAh NiMH AA MAHAs~ 4.8V->USB port). Handy for powering other USB-linked devices eg. MP3 Player, and Power-greedy WiFi hotspot web browsing.

I’m confused by “calculation”, isn’t this mod for AAAs. So if he/she can tell me who makes 2700mAh AAAs, let me know. I’d love to get some better still if they’re rechargable. ;-p

The highest capacity AAA NiMH I know are 1000mAhs.
