The only thing Sony is trying to do is to keep the 3rd party developer’s happy. Honestly, Sony doesn’t care about homebrew. All the developers know is that a downgraded PSP can play any game available in iso format. Why develop for a globally hacked handheld and lose money? Even though a lot of you guys, including myself, only use the psp for homebrew, developers don’t know that. Sony is just trying to keep them happy, otherwise the PSP will see an early grave.

i would honestly suggest the removal of psp iso recognition. yes, this would be a major stepback for us all, but the other features more than make up for it. it would basically wipe out the pirate scene, relegating them to older games that run on older custom fw’s. i feel this would allow sony and DA to reach a suitable conclusion. they dont care that you wanna run your atari thru your psp, they just dont want you downloading killzone and eing a thieving bastard. all this sony give up shit is just that: shit. if they give up, so will developers. then you’ll ONLY have your homebrew…. anyone with a brain capable of more than ’sony r gai dood, pwned agen’ care to comment?

Sony are playing a crafty game. they will never patch up all the holes in the firmware, they know its too much of a benefiet to them to have the homebrew scene, they make a profiet on every PSP sold, and we tend to be the ones buying the most of them. They are just doing this as quality control.

I appreciate $ony updates because it gives the PSP more functions for developers to work with to improve the quality of at least some of the games. Wasn’t it just a few firmware updates ago that they had said the PSP internal memory wasn’t enough for new features? They keep adding useless stuff to firmware updates if you ask me. I think they should remove the foreign language from the US firmware and the English out of other countries, etc….they already have firmware for specific countries so why have so many different language options for every country. Make an English one, Japaneese one, Chinese one, etc….may be more work, but it will leave space for more features. I also say, stop with the security patches, Sony, they aren’t working!

And believe me I tried it i have 3 PSP one or sonys firmware One for Dark alexes and one for skrewing with. I downgraded the one for screwing with from 3.10 to 1.50 with The 3.03 downgrader piece of cake!

Sony could give two shits and a fuck about homebrew. Homebrew makes the psp sale. 3rd party developers don’t want to make games for system, because they know it will get pirated and they will lose money. That’s probably why we are getting these half assed titles. Sony is just releasing updates to keep the 3rd party developers happy. Piracy cannot be stopped so I think the PSP will die because of it. This is the link to the news for the Team C+D 3.10 Downgrader, they so hella badass and fast at this, and alot of ppl were right about how quick stuff can come out now!

I think the way forward for me personally, as somebody who downloads isos to test out potential game purchases before (honestly) deleting them (”Thrillville” was the familiar good idea/poor execution, “Rocky Balboa” wasn’t terribly good, nor was the new “Fight Night”), is to get more demos out there on the Sony site – renting them costs up to $9 or so for two nights, and that’s ridiculous, especially when (if I decide to purchase) I have to tack on that $9 to the price of the game – it’s a very bad situation, and I haven’t bought a new UMD for around a year, mostly due to the bad software – I may plump for “Field Commander” and “GTA: VCS” at some point soon, but let’s just say I’m slightly disgruntled that I’ve perhaps bought the wrong handheld again (I remember buying the superior hardware of the GameGear over the software superior Game Boy) – if it wasn’t for homebrew I’d be *exceptionally* unhappy as I think that “Wipeout Pure” has been the only truly great game on the console, with so many near misses elsewhere where the games are good, but just ill-suited or flawed in a couple of major ways. Thank-goodness for “The Secret of Monkey Island” (my personal favourite game of all-time) and ScummVM, the latter going a long way to justifying the console’s price. Sony have missed a really great opportunity to integrate such homebrew, to “normalise” it – I know it’s hard to set up some sort of regulation concerning multi-platform emulation, and Nintendo may have (as an example), in such an approach, kicked Sony while they were down by refusing to even consider licensing out past games, but at least it would have absolved both Sony and the homebrew community at least from a degree of responsibility concerning emulation of Nintendo software – Sega have at least put out a collection, for example. Sony would say it’s not their place to ask for such things, but they have created a console with enough power, and enough security loopholes, to encourage a radical homebrew community – after all, if the scene has hackers that can break the work of Sony’s staff, then a dialogue must started between Sony and this particular community, not to mention a long-overdue conversation Sony needs to have with the past (emulation generally, and also the PSX), and the future (the very poor, and very cynical, decision to tag the PSX’s emulation on PSP to the PS3, surely one of the worst decisions of modern gaming).

This lack of balance (both on our side, and on Sony’s) is attested to in a recent article in U.K. magazine “Edge”:

“If Sony wants people to believe that hacking is no laughing matter, it should really do something about the farcical relationship it continues to share with PSP’s underground community. As if the instantaneous exploitation of its 3.02 firmware wasn’t enough (its security circumvented by pre-existing firmware emulation software), the yuletide antics of Hollywood-grade hacker ‘dark_alex’ must have had its manufacturer wondering whether to hire him (or indeed her) or have him shot” (Issue 172, p. 22).

The article continues on to speak of the emulation of the PSX, and “Edge” appears to criticise Sony in mentioning how Sony continue only to put forward “its stance on piracy in general”, instead of just opening up and addressing the problem. I would personally feel better as a gamer if the company I continue to hold a level of respect for (no matter this PS3 and PSP nonsense) would afford me (and my hacking friends here) some honesty because I consider that I have an investment in the intellectual future of the PSP – each of us share a wish to ensure the PSP’s survival, both as legitimate console and as hotbed for “alternative” development, and the point I wish Sony would get is that it is easier for all of us to rationalise isos, to rationalise other illegal activities, if those who are out that to discipline us reply only in the abstract.

Irishdoody has a good concept there; download ISOs before buying games because I don’t know of any place that rents out PSP games and I am not going to pay $39 for a game I have never played. I downloaded Infected ISO before I bought it. I am a sucker for games with blood/gore and I wasn’t sure how well the PSP graphics would be compared to home consoles especially having owned Game Boy, Game Gear and Atari Lynx and noticing the graphics on hand-held systems do NOT hold up. I under-estimated the power of the PSP. The graphics on it are great and I soon realized this after I made my purchase last year. I think they should rent out PSP games at local game stores to try them before buying them.
