PSP External Power Review

greg | January 26, 2007

The next time you’re waiting in a 72 hour line up for the next great console (or hand held) you should definitely pick up one of these — the PSP External Power (aka the “Power Night”) from Mr. Battery.

This PSP external mounted battery acts as power reserve to ensure your internal one keeps running, even at the worse of times. Let me play out a little scenario for you… You’re camping out for the PS4, you have a full charge that lasts around 5 hours. 19 hours left; now what? You’re fresh out of battery juice and boredom starts to kick in… Wouldn’t you rather build a couple more Katamaris? Well, with the PSP External Power you would’ve gained an extra ~ 10+ hours — more enjoyment, less dreariness. Double that up, you’re doing great now! It saved me in a similar situation once or twice.

The Power Knight weighs 150g and is designed to clip nicely onto the back of your PSP, as seen here:

Power Knight aka PSP External Power Picture

Battery life time is approximately 10-20 hours depending on intensity. In addition it provides a nice firm grip on the PSP; in fact, in my opinion, it’s a more comfortable ergonomic-like grip. My only real complaint is having to remove the battery to gain access to the UMD drive. For complete battery specifications you can download this pdf document.

So, think a head of time and pick yourself up some PSP External Power over at Mr. Battery (Canadian customers — click here).

You’ll also notice an assortment of various batteries — for laptops and whatnot, so check out laptopcharge.com (or laptopcharge.ca) for all your battery needs.

every external psp device looks like s%$t. like a prototype..what happened to design and style? maybe they should have made the psp a square piece of grey metal.

How much bulk is this going to add to the PSP?
Anyone know what the thickness of the pack is?
I bought Sony’s 2200 mAh that fit inside the battery compartment for roughly 40 (US $) after tax.

hmm, i thought it was funny how it was posted too. lol. i thought it was some homebrew app that did somehting to the battery. lol, ah well

well, i guess it CAN be useful to some psp owners if they wanted to get a hold of it. it WOULD be useful. but you sacrifice the bank book again.
man, how much do we have to spend on our baby to be happy…

What about the Mad Catz 2X Battery Expander? Last weekend I saw it selling at walmart for ~$7CDN. It even came with an extra USB cable. However, it sells for $14.82US at walmart.com. Any one tried it?

i noticed the whole on top for access to the USB port, can you connect the GPS Module to that thing? Probably going to have to get an USB extension. Hrm, mini-USB to mini-USB, haven’t seen that yet, don’t feel like making my own either. Now, if that thing have one built in, that would be more useful.

by the way, the title does say “Review”…but maybe it a mfg sponsored review, like they sent a free one plus some care packages, kinda like putting a movie critic up in a really nice hotel for them to watch a movie.

Yo Greg, you are a nice guy from the communication we have had, and although this article is somewhat helpful, if you are going to keep to the “Mods” of the Psp-Hacks remit, then perhaps better to cover a wider range rather than oddly-placed “reviews”. I wouldn’t be personally against seeing proper news, rather than what might be construed as advertisements. However, I respect that this is your site and because of it I’ve had an awful lot of fun. Just figured, however, that I’d let you know what I thought.

How is alerting the psp public to a battery with at least twice as much juice an advertisement? Greg does an awesome job at covering a wide range of topics, he doesn’t need to review shit, this is a news site, and as such needs only to touch on subjects he thinks will be interesting to the gaming public.

Throw in the fact that he also covers ps3’s and 360’s, the dude has his hands more than full.

That said, there has been a battery out for the psp very similar to this that is even the same shape and life (could even be the same one!) for a very long time, but don’t ask for specifics lol, cause i gots no idea what it was called.

Rock the fuck on greg, you do an amazing job, plus your tidbits always make great reading, hats off to you brother.

This is cool for people who is always on their PSP’s without the convenience of Power Outlet. Well, me personally, Don’t need this since i always have my PSP hooked up to the Power Outlet plus 2 extra Batteries!!! Now, If someone were to give me one of this for free, That would be great, hell, i would call you uncle! JK!!!

Ok the width of the battery pack is the same size as the psp its self pluss a bit more for a small gap between the two. good idea if it was twice as thin. If i wanted to do that i would carry a laptop battery with a reguator on it last about 30hours too. I does add extra weight nearly doubling the psps weight. Also not all games can be on a iso. Also i wouldnt ave the ability to play my psp for that long. Also one thing it doesnt state what happens if you drop it because it weights alot, will it break its self and your psp. Anyone tryed to imagine the charing time. Ok i have finished few. good idea but too bulky

i have used many external battery packs and there is either one of 2 problems: 1) wires, i hate wires they always get in the way! 2) capacity nomatter what the battery claims it is never delivers. i will buy one and post back after i test it out. from what i see there is no wire to connect to the psp this could be great if it delivers.

Comment by vicious

looks like there is 2 connector pins on the bottom right hand side and the clip on the top holds the psp down so they make contact.

id assume is uses those and sticks into the original battery compartment, its just like the standard battery…. just really REALLY big

ok got received the battery yesterday. this thing is bad ass no wires and it played umd movie on repeat for over 12 hours. it does make the psp thicker but this helps and keeps my hand from getting cramped. this thing connects with 2 fixed leaf connectors that align with the contact plates on the psp. overall this is a must have for the psp because it keeps you portable.

That battery is using Li-Polymer, not Li-ion, that’s why is only 150g and can lasts over 10 hrs, I will buy one rather buy 2 internal battery, Li-Polymer battery can use last longer than Li-ion battery. and much more safely

I bought one of these packs and they are great.. Its the only way you are going to be able to sit on an airplane for 10 hours and continue to use your PSP (unless you are first class and have a power outlet). It worked great and helped me from getting bored.. I agree with the UMD thing being a pain in the ass.. but I am sure if you used a memory stick the battery will last twice as long. I had 10 hours using UMD and still had battery remaining. This might not be for everyone.. but if you travel alot like I do.. its a great buy.

i dont really like tht thing it makes the psp too bulk. this is the time period when things should get thinner and nicer. in my eyes, its almost making the psp look like shit. its good having the battery life tht long, but its too fuckin expensive i can get like 4 umd movies for it fer tht much

hey people that have the battery pack, how much more inch does it add to the psp(the height)? if you take the two rubber off the psp cover case, will it fit or it’s too high?

Comment by PG
2007-02-12 23:47:07

I just got mine this morning, and wow, I’m impressed. It ads an extra 2/3’s the thickness of the psp, but it really does improve the grip (it’s rubberized as well).

Pros: Huge battery life, better grip, use the same charger you use to charge the psp.

Cons: Need to take it off to get to the UMD (not a problem for ISO users), need to find a larger protective case that’ll accommodate it or else you need to store them seperately.
